Quick Rich Onion Gravy

Ingredients are listed here.
2 medium onions, peeled and thinly sliced
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
750ml beef stock (OXO is good if you don't have homemade)
4 teaspoon cornflour (cornstarch)
4 teaspoons cold water
Salt and black pepper

I gotta say, I did not expect 'quick gravy' to take 30+ minutes to prepare. But it looks tasty.
