BEFORE YOU COMMENT :
-The purpose of this video is only to show the difference between quick shifting and powershifting.
-Constructive comments are welcome.
-Stop whining about the shape of the transmission. I don't drive like that all day everyday, and it still shifts like butter (must be done properly though).
-Whining about the position of my hand on the steering wheel is also irrelevant. I usually drive with both hands on it, but during the making of the video I happened to let one hand on the shifter because I felt like it (multiple shifts on a short time).
-Thanks for watching and let the VTEC kick in, yo !
VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Quick lifted shifts vs full throttle powershifts. Powershifting means that you never leave your foot off the gas while shifting. Also added some rev matching near the end.

yes thats true... i don't understand how stupid people are... powershifting... u dont lost to many rpm but you can kill the gearbox with that fucking shit... und das ganze auf deutsch... powershifting is beschissen der Vorteil ist zwar das man weniger Drehzahl verliert (klar Kupplung öffnet das zusätzlich noch gas weg verliert man leistung und die Drehzahl sinkt im nächsten Gang) aber dadurch leidet das Getriebe und man kann echt viel Scheiße mit machen zudem isn Getriebe samt anderer Teile richtig teuer und aufwändig wenn man das alte reparieren möchte sofern das noch möglich ist

I disagree, man. I drive manuals ever since I got my driver's license and I don't see how powershifting saves time, since you can release and go back on the throttle at the same time you press and let go of the clutch.

Power shifting can deliver slightly more power to the wheels. If your clutch is tight and you spend as little time possible in between gears, its fine for racing.

quick shifting is not possible with every car(depends on the transmission) power shifting is invented by guys who dont know how a clutch works and just destroy the flywheel at the same time (nice blue colour if you take out the transmission) yes you win some time and stay a bit higher in revs but still it will be expensive later on

There is absolutely no reason to powershift in a N/A car. The reason people do it is to keep the turbo spooled between shifts. All your doing in an N/A car is furthering the belief you are a ricer.

***** I have no idea what you're talking about. Why are you talking to me about powerbands? Does flatfoot shifting result in the engine being at a higher rpm once you've shifted in the next gear? No, you'll end up at the same rpm as you would shifting normally therefore you'll be in the same area of the powerband. There is one reason and one reason only for flat shifting. You keep the turbo spooled and that's it. I would advise you to go and buy a boosted car, sit in neutral and give it a rev and tell me whether or not your turbo spools up.

***** no it doesn't stops dead but it stops forcing air into the engine while the bov releases the compressed air in side of the pipe, which would starve the motor, creating vacuum in the pipe for a split second which is called "boost lag"... He's right about power shifting. Its really only efective to keep the turbo spooled to prevent the lost power from lag

Power shifts are stupid. I can shift faster with a "quick shift" than a car can catch up with a "power shift." All your doing when your power shifting is slowly tearing your clutch up. A clutch works something like disk brakes just opposite operation. What I mean by "works opposite is brakes clamp to slow you down, a clutch clamps to speed you up. What you stomp the clutch to the floor without letting off the throttle is like putting on the brakes gently with the throttle still on. All your doing is making two surfaces touch in ways they are not really suppose to. A metal disk and a fiber metal in both cases are rubbing and slowly tearing down the fiber disk faster but still the metal disk also. Just shift fast and practice on shifting fast and in no time you will be able to shift faster than a person that is using "speed shifting" and having the car catch up from the lag.

The owners manual for my 1990 Honda CRX Si, which I purchased in 1991 and still drive as my daily driver, specifically states not to "speed shift" but to give the synchronizers time to work. So I've never shifted like demonstrated in the video and I'm still driving with the original gearbox internals. :-)
@ijustinw
@ijustinw 9 жыл бұрын
***** how do you do that, synchronize by yourself? this is something new to me, doesn't the gear engage fully when you shift or??
@pgong
@pgong 9 жыл бұрын
ijustinw I simply do not slam the shift lever into the next gear. I can actually feel the synchronization occurring through the lever. It's like this: When you shift, you'll feel a resistance in the lever after you pass "neutral" like a physical notch before the actual end of the lever travel during a shift. That "notch" is the synchronizer and it's important to not rush shifting through that notch. If you just rest the lever against the notch while shifting, it will eventually just fall into gear easily when things are synchronized. It's more noticeable when shifting at high RPM when the RPM mismatch between gears is greater thus putting more load on the synchronizers; not as much at low RPM. More effort/force against the notch creates a faster synchronization (if the synchros can handle it) with "speed" shifting being the extreme case. But like brakes, the harder/faster you shift, the faster it will wear out. On a new gearbox, the synchros are so new that the notch may not be really noticeable and shifts are easy and fast with little resistance or notch. But things will get more notchy as the synchros age and lose effectiveness, especially if "speed" shifting is a normal occurrence. Eventually you get grinding when shifting due to the synchros being too worn to work properly. But shifting gently as described above slows down this wear considerably. My 24 year old CRX above will not shift quite as quickly as when new. It takes just a tiny bit more time for the lever to "fall" into gear than when it was new. But the gearbox's internals are still original and it will not grind when shifting even at high RPM unless I force the lever through the notch faster than the synchros can work. Transmission oil also plays a role in synchro performance. Some oils allow smoother, easier shifting than others. Proper double clutching of up or down shifts is "self-synchronizing" and also prolongs synchros to insane amounts, but that's not practical for many if not most drivers. I used to do all the time which I'm sure has led to my gearbox longevity. I still do it when I want to do a fast downshift at high RPM. It's simply kinder to the synchros. Does that make sense?
@ijustinw
@ijustinw 9 жыл бұрын
pgong this actually was very informative and helpful. I have one question, today when I was waiting for someone, car turned off, I played a little bit with the gear shifter, I went over gears 1 to 2, 3 to 4 and so very fast. Did I make any damage to the synchros?
@pgong
@pgong 9 жыл бұрын
ijustinw No. Because the engine was off, nothing was spinning inside of the gearbox so no damage can happen. If the the "teeth" on the synchros and collars were not lined up, the lever might not go into gear fully but no problem. The same is true with the engine on and the clutch fully depressed.
@pgong
@pgong 9 жыл бұрын
ijustinw It should also be said that synchros are designed to be used assuming they're not abused. I don't ever recommend that anyone double clutch their shifts on a synchromesh gearbox per se, but wouldn't ever discourage it either. Shifting normally (single clutch) is normal, designed use. Double clutch shifting is being especially kind to the transmission and synchros and there's nothing wrong with prolonging the life of any machine. Plus, I can actually downshift, when at high RPM, faster with a double clutch so there is a performance advantage for me then.

In general, speed shifting is pretty much like how you would shift normally, you're just doing it as fast as possible. Powershifting is when you keep the gas pedal floored and physically pull the transmission out of gear and quickly force it into the next gear. Usually you have to tap the clutch pedal, thus partly unloading the drive train from the engine's torque. This can be very hard on your car, especially if you have alot of horsepower. If done correctly it almost sounds like an automatic.

Only a couple reasons to power shift I can think of: 1. You have massive turbo lag and no anti-lag system 2. You have bad gear ratios/power band and it bogs in one of the gears. The RPMs are gonna drop on the next upshift so why fight it?

Marshall Morton I agree with that general concept, however this is just not true in all terms. Most nowadays turbo reach there high end line way bore the end of the ref limiter. Only a few cars have linear power lines. So this really doesn't matter. Some cars you can even go back to 4000 rpm and still have max power from the spool instead of going to the 7000'ish... And what I am saying is even more true with twin scroll turbos.

***** Whenever you get off gas on a turbo car the airflow will drop thus not "driving" the turbo...it loses inertia as well. Keeping on throttle mitigates this...at least to the best of my understanding. And no one said anything about rev limiters...why even bring it up? Some philosopher once said: Best to be considered an idiot than open mouth and remove all doubt!
@gymweeb9229

Steve Smythe You sir, have won the crown... You obviously didn't read my comment. This whole video was made to show that if you don't ship fast enough you might lose ''Power''. This is bullshit in most cars! And that is why I talked about the rev limiter. If you go on a dyno you will see the power curve. Most cars, and I bet most of the people here have a power curve that will be constant at around 4000 to 7000 so it really does not matter how you shift. As long as you are above those 4000 your turbo will create it max possible HP. You will never go faster then that. FACT!

As for confidence, well it comes with time and practice, like any other activity. When I shift like that, I don't think about it twice. I just kick the clutch hard and slam the shifter into gear, not caring about what could happen if it doesn't go in. If you hesitate, chances are that you will miss the shift.

Lol I don't know what you're thinking but the K20Z1 at 212 Hp isn't a little joke. Even if you go on here you will see Rsx -s hitting 145 running 6.5 rpm, or do you want to see that same engine K20Z1 @1200 HP, 1/4 Mile 7.8 hitting 186, with turbo, cams, cold air, dog box tranny? And that's without shooting nitro. That's my mechanics set up and exact same engine as mine I'd like to hear your engine pull that off. (Although in the bad side he did fuck his engine in Vegas in December drag racing dog box tranny caught 1st instead of going 3rd blew his engine)

that's really good, but what if you accidentally instead of going to 3rd you go into 1st? how do you change so fast and land on the gear you want witch such confidence? ps I'm just learning how to drive stick, and sometimes I down shift by mistake but since I don't do it fast I just shift to neutral really fast

I hate that crunching sound when you shift. I'm reading down the comments and there seems to be a better way called synchronizing shifts. Sounds like you wouldn't be hurting her if you tried that technique.

Power shift is just driving wrong dude, you are fucking your clutch.... Btw, i never uderstood how to properly downshift on a stick... I mean, when i do it with my car, the car makes a punch, i mean, like if it stalls, (it doesnt) but idk it sounds and looks weird... How do i know at what speed should i change the gear down without passing the redline and fucking everything? I do know that i can do 0-40 in first, 40-90 in second, 90-130 in third, 130-150 in fourth and 150-180 in fifth... (Km/h) Sadly i have a 120 hp car haha

powershifting is used by people who race hence the name power shifting makes you go a little quicker at the cost of more wear on ur transmission doing it all the time is dumb but if you wanna race its pretty reasonable
@wheezy7655
@wheezy7655 7 жыл бұрын
Slow down before down shifting the reason you feel a punch is because the engine is taking the punch by slowing down your vehicle. To downshift slow the car down first maybe to between 1500 to 2000RPM Another thing could be rev matching many tutorials out there. Always match the engine with the transmission.

Nice video... love the sound of your car. Do you have a WOT box installed to powershift? Also have to say i now own a mazda and miss the precision of a honda gearbox (used to own a 97 integra). Dont worry about the haters. I dont understand how people claim they love cars and then hate on everything besides what they drive or have driven. I would be willing to bet most if not all of the guys hating on hondas have never owned one or driven one for more than a few blocks (nevermind tracked one).

I know that you can get a WOT box and powershift without worrying about damage, how harmful is it to powershift w/o a WOT box or something similar? I've been powershifting in my 98 Z/28 and was just wondering how much damage am I actually causing?
