Look at the Antonov AN-225 take-off and landing. It is a 6-engine powerhouse that was destroyed by Russia early on in their incursion into Ukraine.

When I was in college these things would fly over my dorm when coming in to land at the nearby base, and the only way I can describe it is that it looks like a building just hanging in the air. They're so big that when they're flying slowly it almost seems like they aren't moving. Even though I understand the principles of physics that allow planes to fly, whenever I see something like that in person I feel like I almost have to force my brain to accept that something that large is actually in the air.

Why its just simple physics and complicated physics

They could have flown their first powered flight inside a C-5.

One of them lived long enough to see commercial aircraft I'm pretty sure

Very cool, I'd see those take off every now and then when I lived in Tucson next to Davis Monthan AFB.. There's no sound like an C-5 Galaxy taking off, unmistakable...

My Grandfather built the landing gear assembly and installed it on the original A model . Don't think they have changed anything on it .

Thats because of the ammount of lift that its high anhedral wing design creates the same can be said with a c17

I flew in C-141 starlifter, that’s as big as I’ve flown in.😢 Never got a chance to go in the C5A.

I agree completely, such a powerful experience when heard in person. I look back fondly on those classic TF39 sounds, looking forward now I’m just grateful the C-5 still flies!

@@UNITED38Heavy Living close to the runway at Bangor International they have touch and go aircraft a lot and even Air Force One!

Yanks like to complain about them being quieter now and how they don't sound like the old models, but counterpoint: I like that I can now watch C-5 take offs without having to shut off my car alarm between vids.

@@PopulismIsForBottomFeeders I guess i just like loud airplanes but hate loud trucks and loud motorcycles. And there is a C5M headed this way right now to do the touch and go landings.

The new engines are faster as well.

I have watched the C-5 A & B models taking off into 30 to 50 knot headwinds at Ramstein AB where the literally looked like they were levitating at about 500 feet altitude, being held aloft by those massive, screaming engines and those enormous leading and following edge flaps. As amazing as it was to watch and listen to the F-4E's screaming off the base ans later the F-16's nothing compares to watching and listening to this BEAST taking off and landing. Growing up as an Air Force brat I was in and out of those birds dozens of times at airshows, even getting to climb up to the flight deck before security was forced to tighten up. It wasn't until I was in the Marine Corps taking 3 weeks leave after finishing my MOS training and flying back to Ramstein to visit family and friends that I was able to fly in one from Dover AFB to Rota NAS in Spain. So weird sitting in the troop deck, facing the tail instead of the nose.

Yeah, but that howl from the old tf-39's is the most unique sound of any turbo fan, akin to the engines of the a-10 (though they got re- engined, too, I think?) I miss the flightline. 😁

The TF-39 was the best engine to witness. Grew up with it here in NY, wish they kept the C-5’s or at least upgraded them to the “M” model.

Sure does, the C-5M uses the CF6 series engine which is widely used on a multitude of aircraft ranging from the 747-400, MD-11, A300, A330, 767, etc. I believe the military designation for this engine is the F138.

Couldn’t agree more! The C-5 is my personal favorite aircraft, Stewart (KSWF) used to be home to 13 C-5’s. I sure miss the screaming TF-39 engines, but it’s nice to see the Galaxy modernized up to current standards. The C-17 is insane too, an aircraft of that size being so maneuverable is no easy feat. They don’t build them like they used to!
