Quick Tip: Remove background noise in Adobe Audition from Adobe Premiere Pro CS6/CC

In this video, I show how to remove background noise in Adobe Audition by starting the process in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. With proper noise reduction, you can get clean audio in a few minutes.

Jean thank you so very much. I recorded a student's interview presentation at a private school I work as an Audio Visual Technician and I got permission to bring the card home to get rid of the sandy noise throughout the video. Almost none of the audio effects in Premiere were helping. Dynamic came close, but it wasn't until Audition was mentioned on one of the videos on KZfaq to try, but yours was the video that got rid of the noise throughout. I'm feeling so good going back to work with these results.

hello, great video, in my footage i have problem with wind, it was blowing hard and i recorded sound with camera so now it is anoying sound that eats other sounds. how can i reduce it or remove it. I would be so thankful if you could explain it to me. Cheers

Hi, using the method in this video, you can remove some background noise from wind, but if the wind is really bad, and the microphones not too good (such as the built-in mics of a camera), then there's not enough difference between the noise and the good audio, so it's about impossible to eliminate.

Salut Benjamin, malheureusement, je ne crois pas que ce soit possible, sauf si c'est un écho régulier causé électroniquement (tel une conversation téléphonique). Tu peux expérimenter avec le EQ, mais en général, ça rend les choses encore pire. L'écho est comme échapper 1kg de sel dans ta soupe. Le mieux est de recommencer, et de traiter la pièce pour ne pas qu'elle crée d'écho. Tu peux rajouter de l'écho/reverb, mais tu ne peux pas l'enlever.

Hi Eivind, each audio file is different, but most of the time if you tweak the settings and add some EQ afterwards, you can achieve good results. But it always depends on your Signal-to-Noise Ratio. The louder your good audio is compared to the background noise, the better the results will be.

Jean Pierre, Great helpful video, I recorded audio with a shotgun mic but had a strong lawnmower sound in the background, will this method reduce the sound or is it a similar situation like the comment with the Wind noise where there's nothing much i can do to remove the sound if it's mixed in with my main dialog audio?

Hi Jon, noise removal is kind of hard to predict, so my best recommendation is to give it a try. If you already have Adobe Audition installed, it takes a few minutes and you'll know for sure. If the software can't tell the noise from the dialog, it definitely won't do much, because by reducing the noise, you would at the same time reduce the dialog. The louder the dialog is compared to the lawnmower, the better your results will be, so if your mic was 6 inches away from a subject who talked loudly, and the lawnmower 100 feet away, it wouldn't be as bad as a soft speaker with a mic 3 feet away and the lawnmower 6 feet away. But definitely when it comes to audio, getting it right in the recorder is the golden rule. Good post-production can save some errors, or sometimes turn something completely unuseable into something somewhat tolerable. Or you can be lucky and it'll remove all the noise.

+Jean-Pierre La Forest I'm using CC and I can't get premiere to refresh. When I save in Audition it tells me that the files is in use and can't be over-written. Any ideas?

Hi Owen Hemsath, sometimes I get that message if I have the audio track selected in Adobe Premiere. Just click somewhere else in Premiere, and you should be able to save the file in Audition. Hope that helps!

Ouais, c'est pas mal ça les reponses que j'ai eu de toutes parts ! Je cherchais à réduire l'echo, ne serait-ce qu'un peu, puisqu'un re-enregistrement n'est pas possible... J'ai experimenté un peu, et lorsque je reussis à reduire l'echo, j'enleve en parallele les autres caracteristiques sonores de la voix enregistree... Hi WRESTLING SOUP, sadly each recording is different. Sometimes it works better than others, and sometimes you can only reduce a little bit of noise without affecting the audio quality, and other times it can be quite impressive.

Hi WRESTLING SOUP, sadly enough the best way to deal with resonance is to try to fix it at the source: fix the room so it doesn't have as much echo, use the correct microphone placed at the correct location to minimize echo, etc. In post-production you can fix it a bit, but you're very limited in how much you can fix it without breaking your audio clip too much.

grave, which looks like ` (not to be confused with ' )("accent grave" is basically a small backslash some languages such as French add on top of vowels to change how it sounds, so we have e, é, è, and ê)
