I love this movie. It wasn't a story about loving your weird family, or finding your past, or accepting your messed up life... it was a big middle finger to abusive parents and orphan services. Characters were great. The kids were actually portrayed as kids. Acting impulsively, sometimes stubborn, but yet loving. It was wonderfully stylized and colorful and told this very hard topic in a fun way.

Same... I cried A LOT. Especially on that moment where the kids got sent to different families and "Nanny" was moving away. And I also cried (A lot more this time) on that part where they vere coming to rescue their parents... The thought that their parents don't love them kept bothering me, until the "fake hope" moment, where I was just like "Aw! They love them!", but then... I CRIED EVEN MORE... (And the snow was reminding me of Ukraine - my home country, where I used to live.)

I have a theory about the style- It looks stop motion, and if you notice all air/hair effects look like yarn. Mother is always yelling about how “she can’t knit.” I think this is symbolic for the unit a family is supposed to be. However, when mother can’t knit, it represents how she can’t keep a family together.

One thing I loved about this movie is the consistency in how the parents treated their kids, everything down to their names was fine tuned to their parents' attitudes. The childrens' names do not reflect their characters in the slightest way and are reflections of their parents abuse. Tim is Tim, never Timothy, it is a simple, vaguely formal name that can can be yelled easily while knitting. Jane is about as simple as a girl's name can get, plain Jane, and while Barnaby is incredibly formal and mildly unusual the parents didn't bother to think of a second name, calling both their sons the same.

As I watched the end of the movie yesterday (was it really yesterday when I watched it?), I found myself saying, “If these parents get a redemption arc at the end, I’m going to be LIVID.” And right when it looked like they were about to...I became even more happy about the ending. To me, this would be a perfect movie to show adopted kids. It shows that a family is made of people who want each other, not just who is related to each other. My heart broke for Tim every time he tried denying Linda, because that’s so typical of an older child who just wants their original family back. But she never gave up on him, which eventually wins him over. While the movie was a bit cheesy in some parts (my gosh, the freakin SONG), I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought it would. I wouldn’t mind watching it again, and I wouldn’t mind recommending it to a few people. On a rating scale, I’d give it a 4/5.
@AllyGatorAnimator
@AllyGatorAnimator 4 жыл бұрын
The minute they started implying a redemption arc, with Tim saying they needed their parents just so the kids could stay together, I KNEW the parents were going to screw them over. There was no way they were going to end with the moral of the story being "it's alright to stay in an abusive home to be with your family," (though it did make perfect sense for Tim to have that mindset at that moment, with the hope of things improving). It made their death a lot more satisfying though.

You know what this movie actually reminds me of? When you start to grow up, you become 11ish-12-13, and you start realizing you can't enjoy family cartoons movies anymore, and you start plotting a diferent movie in your head basically while you watch the movie, more edgier more dark more "complex", and this movie is basically that, but in a good way, ngl, in the best way it could have been.

I did cry. :'( It was when they were taken away by Orphan Services. It reminded me of when DSS came and took my younger siblings and I away. They didn't tell us where we were going and we were separated. And the constant running away from foster homes was something my little brother did, because he had never been away from any of us before. The just existing that Jane was doing was me in my group home. And even though that whole thing in the movie was fast and didn't last long, it was still very sad to see.

O.k, something I noticed is that a lot of people would consider Tim as a controlling paranoid child. But, the reason he is like this is he never had anyone to take care of him and had to take care of his siblings as well. The reason he has such a distrust for the nanny is because all of the grown ups in his life were abusive and he feels that he can't trust anyone but himself. His character seems a lot more sad and mature.

The candy man and Ruth especially felt like they were just there for plot purposes. I wish they would have explored the orphan services and the nanny’s character more. I completely agree that it was vary fast pace at the end, it almost felt rushed, like they had too many points and things they wanted to get in and they started to run out of time. I felt like if I zoned out for a second I would end up missing half the story.

Grandma and grandpa willoughby..might've been.. _one of those_ families,you know.. The ones whom would rather have their children marry to certain people with _the same last name,than..marrying into their own bloodline_ Or possibly,these _parents_ probably were disowned from their original families (for.._obvious reasons_ ),got married young and ran off to start anew away from them,apparently

Everyone in the family has the same red hair, going back generations. It is not explored in the movie for obvious reasons, but I'm pretty that when Mother and Father met, they called eachother Brother and Sister.

Wolf Moondrop Unless if some of the *_earlier_* generations had an "Arranged-marriage"-sorta scenario/deal (Like the fact that they/MOST of them MUST marry to somebody with-at least-SHOCKINGLY BRIGHT red hair and a good personality/trade-or possibly they had a _REALLY big bo-err..thing for gingers/redheads,I mean!_) going on back in the day..but somewhere along the line, _it_ got outta hand.. And just IMAGINE of what would happen if there were members of the _"Willoughby's clan"_ that _DIDN'T_ posses the classic,trademark family hair colour (Since,technically-red hair CAN BE recessive/a recessive gene in certain branches/kinds of people/families though)-say,as in a certain group/branch of their family line that had members were born with blonde/brunette/black hair,or had previously dyed their hair to MATCH their initial bloodline-what would happen to them,unfortunately..? Like-It would be _REAL disturbing_ for Tim and his siblings to find out that,within the members of their ancient/_so-called "Legendary" biological family's bloodline_ to _find out_ that _a distant Uncle/Aunt/cousin of theirs (yes,INCLUDING any other brothers and/or sisters of their awful,negligent birthparents AS WELL,obviously!),while still being very skilled and talented in their fields/lives,most of their ancestors LITERALLY DISOWNED some of their long-lost family members/them (yes,even WITH the Luscious mustachios/moustaches-male AND female,otherwise) ALL JUST BECAUSE they didn't have the Firey-pinkish red locks of their blood-brood_..And be somewhat banished from some of their line as a result! (BUT,it would be okay-the kids,AND their adopted sister,mum and dad in tow-would be wondrously delighted at the fact that they actually got MORE than just a loving adopted family,but also a bunch of members of a wonderful extended family with the same blood that have actually felt their pain of being either pushed and/or taken away to live with other families/people instead of their own brood too..apparently-so,though..!?!?!) But,yeah-there _ARE SOME real..interesting and DISTURBING implications regarding_ this..Again-on top of that,one side of me _says that either most of the Willoughby-brides,whom weren't redheads naturally,had to Dye their hair red or be rejected for a..more,Ginger-haired (obviously) FEMALE sibling/relative (although I guess that if the aforementioned sibling of hers was MALE-He'd be paired up with one of their girl-children/cousins/nieces/etc..instead,apparently,I do believe,yes?),possibly by choice or BY FORCE,while another side of me says that...with the fact that (even) the WOMEN get nice,luscious moustaches/facial hair on them,I guess it's safe to assume that ONE of the long,long-Long distant great-aunts/female (Lady) ancestors of the willoughby children and/or parents was a bearded-lady..so...._

Wolf Moondrop Like red hair in real-life,the _glorious Willougby moustaches_ must/MIGHT be possibly a _recessive thing,if they marry outside the bloodline..but incest? That's..also..another,yet gross and disturbing,possibility as well,though.._ Also,I would _think to chalk it up to suggest that one of the early,ancestral matriarchs of this odd family had been/WAS a bearded-lady in a past life..sooo,yeah-that._

I laughed so hard when the father started his throat sound. Funny thing, i can make that sound perfectly and ive been making that sound for 7 years for my haunted house. I use that sound to creep people out and make them laugh as well. When i first heard him do that in the movie, I lost it. I even did sound at the same time as he did his in the movie. My family though it was surround sound lol.

It's interesting seeing more and more stylized animation that isn't like for the sake of being artsy and deep. Like, it's like animation studios way to just flex their skills. Like, "Yeah we made this film just aimed towards kids. Yeah, we also made it look super-unique looking and like it's out of a story-book" Like, the Trolls series I'd say fits this idea well. It's made directly for kids but it uses such a unique art-style that's fairly difficult to animate and render (I would compare it to Kirby's Epic Yarn or Yoshi's Wooly World; it's just an art-style you just want to touch and feel the textures), but it also appeals more to a young audience. The earliest film I could really think of that started that trend of kid's animation that looks phenomenal that's not just standard Disney, Pixar, or even Dreamworks would actually be Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. It looks and feel like an old cartoon. Another example would probably be the Lego Movie, where it looks and feels like stop-motion even though it's not. From what I saw from the trailers, this movie looks like something between that. Where it looks and feels like an old cartoon but also looks and feels like stop-motion.

I meant to look for a video analysis on this a while ago, because something that really threw me (in a good way) was the portrayal of abuse. I thought the parents' abuse was just going to be played for laughs because of how cartoonish it was, but then the reality really struck with how the babysitter reacted to hearing about the coal box. I'd write a lot more but don't have the time lol, I just wanted to bring that up because it hit me really hard for some reason.
