I was looking for a way to do this without sashing between blocks, and all the other videos without sashing leave a thick batting seam. Now that I don't need to wrangle a large quilt in my small machine, I am going to try free-motion. Thanks! 😘

Linda, I found a quilting book that shows a very similar technique The book shows which blocks to put borders on and how to attach. It makes it so easy to join. The name of the book is Block by Block by Beth Donaldson which is out of print but I’ll be glad to send a pic of the page. The book is available on Amazon and has a lot of good ideas. Send an email jodyrose@bellsouth.net. Anyone who is interested.

I want to try this because the quilting is so stinking expensive! I've had quilters quite me prices that were more expensive than all the materials I bought to make the quilt. I u understand people ha e to make money but its disappointing when you make a bomb quilt top and then cant even finish it because it's so much money. This gives me a nice option so I can save the long arm charges for the extra special quilts.

The on,y bad thing about this method is that I have to switch the whole foot shank each time I’m going to quilt a square, then put the walking foot shank on to attach a new square. That part is pretty labor intensive.

I was wondering in your quilt as you go if you quilted the block the whole way to the end? It also looks like the block was sewn or quilted the whole way around the outside of the block before you added the addition pieces? If this is correct please let me know. I like this ideal of quilt as you go but I want to make sure that I understand it right before I continue on with my quilt.
@QNNtv
@QNNtv 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Wanda, yes, each quilt block is quilted all the way out to the edges (or at least to within 1/4" seam allowance of the edges) to ensure the quilting goes under the additional pieces for extra security.

But you still end up with quilting a big piece
@wildflower1397
@wildflower1397 3 жыл бұрын
They didn't show quilting the layers of the block because this is just an example. Basically, you quilt the first block, then add the next block or border. You then quilt that block you added, before adding the next part. Yes, you end up sewing on a larger quilt eventually, but you are always sewing the outside edge, so no need to fit half a quilt in your machine. You could either start with a block in the middle, or on one side, adding each row of blocks as you go. I plan to try it, starting on one side, so the bulky part of the quilt is always to my open left, instead of in the machine. It's a great idea... have not seen other tutorials with this technique. :)

Love this method. Will make my QAYG smoother but this does not explain how you attach the next quilted block to the shashing, or am I missing something? I need more information, HELP
@latashaharrison2055
@latashaharrison2055 5 жыл бұрын
Around the 4:30 mark she begins the process. Each time you want to add another piece to your work you attach the back and front fabrics to your completed work. By adding the batting as a separate step (about 7:45) your work looks like you did traditional quilting. If you want it to have sashing you would make your “border” pieces the width that you want your sashing to be. Keep repeating the process until you have reached the size that you want, then bind the quilt. Since you’ve done your quilting before joining your blocks you won’t have to fight with large pieces under your machine. This is actually a great method to use if you don’t want to have to cover joining seams without using sashing.
@judig8651
@judig8651 5 жыл бұрын
@@latashaharrison2055 I guess my confusion comes from the way I did my other QAYG where I quilted all my squares then sewed them together. So, I am assuming on this method I will quilt my first square, add my sashing (or next square) then add the next square to be quilted and quilt that square after it is attached to the sashing? If you can't tell I am still a newby at this.I like QAYG best because I find the quilting after the top is together very difficult. Thank you for your response. Still not real sure about connecting each row so that I don't end up with a lot of bulk as I go.
@latashaharrison2055
@latashaharrison2055 5 жыл бұрын
Judi Gatter I love newbies!!! My favorite pastime is helping someone new to the quilt game to find their quilt path. The part that you’re missing wasn’t explained now that I think on your reply. The method outlined works great for one row but how would you connect the rows? I can think of a couple of ways with sashing but it wouldn’t be quite as smooth as this method. It would work great for a medallion style where you keep adding borders to make the quilt larger but not quite as well for multiple rows of pieced work.
@latashaharrison2055
@latashaharrison2055 5 жыл бұрын
Judi Gatter I think I figured out how to use this method for pieced work instead of just a center medallion with a series of borders. It requires some planning to assemble correctly but it can be done. Beginning on the left side of the quilt assemble the leftmost column and quilt it. Instead of pre quilting the rest of the blocks connect the squares of top of the next column as a separate piece. Attach the assembled column to the front of the quilted column as if it were a border strip with the backing on the back as outlined in the video. Once you’ve joined the batting and pressed the new column and backing into place it should look like the borders in the video. Make sure to stay stitch around the edges to minimize shifting then quilt the new column. Continue adding columns this way until you’ve reached the right side of the quilt. Square off and bind. Good luck!
