We had a end of summer party where we did up 12 rack of ribs.
I learned a valuable lesson which I discuss at end of video.

That Pit Boss, really met the challenge very well, I would say. Great pool party. Great maintenance tip, that most of us wouldn't think to be necessary. Nicely Done. Thanks for sharing. 😎.

If that's a fail, I'll take that any time. lol Nice party. Other than the operator error, the VPB did a great job on your ribs Louis. That was a great tip for other pellet smoker owners, especially this one. I wish I had that problem. Great cook, enjoyed watching. I think T-Roy's move is the cannonball. Yours is after you've downed a cold one and baked a while to flip over, cool off, then back to the cooler. lol

I had multiple erL errors in my first two weeks. Did a test run and found three factors that contribute to the error. 1. Dust - more dust in the burn pot than pellets getting in. 2. Not enough pellets getting in. 3. Too much pellets - burns too hot, the thermometer fluctuates too much and the smoker can’t take it down - so it’ll throw the error and shut down. Fix: Clean your burn pot before every cook, I vacuum mine out. To start you next cook, don’t prime after cleaning the pot. Put the selector in “s” and let it smoke for about 5 minutes. Then gradually increase to your desired temp, giving the smoker time to get there. Don’t jump from smoke to 275, my experience is the smoker will try to get to higher temp but not enough pellets get into the pot. Same with going down in temp, go down gradually. Since doing the steps above, I’ve only had the error once. I don’t put alot of pellets either, only about 2 to 3 gallons at a time. Hope this helps, happy cooking.

Mark Florendo True stuff brother. Good advice. I also didn’t preheat it once, like you’re supposed to, and it just made the thing go crazy. A lot of probs with the pit boss pellets are user error. No probs after I followed the directions!
@mountaineermoto8808

Iv noticed the same. Iv had alot of frustrating cooks with my pit boss Lockhart platinum the biggest one was it would throw a no pellet error every hour or so manual said either the thermometer was dirty or damaged so after I finished the cook by constantly turning it off I cleaned it tried again without food to test it same issue resulted then ordered a new one still same issue then one day I saw on KZfaq a person complaining that the gravity fill in the hopper was the issue where the pellets where not feeding. So I looked and did notice the pellet level looked funny pressed prime and nothing came out shaking it did nothing so I took the lid of the hopper off to get to the scenes that removes the grate in the hopper so I can scoop the pellets around every so often no issue with no pellets anymore. As far as the issue with it turning off I concur that preheating and slowly turning the temperature up slowly once it reaches a certain temperature turn it up again till reaches the desired set temp and do the opposite when decreasing solves that majority of the time

I only use what pellets I think it will take for the cook. This happened to me also. Use the shop vac before cooking. You can put the pellets right back in or either use fresher ones. Also I purchased the pit boss cover. It’s really nice and helps a bunch.

Randall Bracewell thank you for watching - I generally clean mine out after every cook - just didn’t empty the pellet hopper. Thank you for watching. I have sifted them in the past but lately I am just putting in what I think I need and then remove excess out after the cook as I seem to have to many cookers that I don’t get back to the pellet grills to use up the pellets left over in the cooker.

So far mine is running good. I emptied the hopper once to change pellets from Competition to Fruitwood blend. Just dumped the Competition that I took back on top of my leftover Fruitwood blend. you need to sift out the saw dust from the pellets first b4 putting the pellets in. saw dust along with the humidity clogs up the auger almost immediately after heavy cooks. try using a strainer to remove as much dust. great cook brother!!! damn yawl did amazing!!

Thats with any pellet fed grill always gotta check for the saw dust. Happens less it the smaller hoppers as they get burned thru more often and you can see any build up easier. They recomend every 3rd cook i believe to clean out the dust and every other the hot pot.

Drill small holes in the bottom of a buckets and pour your pellets in them put a lid on top and bottom as you move the buckets around the dust fills the bottom lid and reduces the bust getting into the hopper Yes you should clear the hopper every time you clean the smoker

Thank you for watching- I have sifted pellets before but what I have found - especially with larger hoppers- the pellets still break down overtime - that is why I now recommend only keeping what you plan on using in the smoker regardless what brand it is or what pellets you use.

Nice video but I’m curious how even does the vertical smoker cook. Did you need to rotate or anything. I have heard of 70 degree swings as being normal
@LouisatRshackBBQ
@LouisatRshackBBQ 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. I did not rotate the ribs and there was no significant difference from top to bottom. There are some wide temp ranges with the vertical smoker during the cook. I normally use the 3-2-1 method as a guideline but will check for color and tenderness to know when they are done - I tend not to worry about the temp swings as it seems to average out at your set temp over the whole time of the cook. I would like to upgrade to a better controller for this and see it that helps

I just bought a Pit Boss Vertical smoker last weekend and you had me stressing for a few minutes. I've noticed that you haven't been doing anymore videos using your vertical smoker. Is there a reason or are you just using all of your others smokers? I have only made a rack of ribs on it and I am finding that there is a learning curve if you've never grilled or used a smoker. After watching a ton of videos, I am going to smoke a pork butt tomorrow... wish me luck.
@LouisatRshackBBQ
@LouisatRshackBBQ 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and hope I didn’t stress you out. I really enjoy this smoker and do use it. I do need to do more videos with it. I like to run my pork butts at 250 and spritz every hour with water or apple cider vinegar. I do like to wrap when it hits 160. I like to add butter - a little more seasoning and apple cider in the wrap and let go till it reaches 200 then pull it - open the foil and let it vent for 5 minutes then loosely wrap back and let it rest on a towel in a open cooler for 1 hour before shredding. Usually takes 8 to 10 hours on the pitboss. And yes it is a learning curve. Let me know how your pork turns out.

@mikecooley3361
@mikecooley3361 Жыл бұрын
3-2-1 method, 3 hours for smoke, 2 hours wrapped in a butter bath or similar solution, final hour sauced. Between unwrapping and saucing, I usually put them back on 15 mins or so to let the bath solution cook dry so it doesn’t make the sauce runny. Heath Riles has a good channel too, lots of how to’s and such.
