R.I.P.D. is a 2013 wannabe summer blockbuster turned box office flop starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges that competes for the title of one of the worst studio movies ever made along with the likes of Gods of Egypt and Artemis Fowl and Green Lantern. And most of all, it's a movie you won't remember seeing -- which is weird because it features multiple distinct high-concept elements as the likes of Inception and Men In Black. So how come high-conceptual elements like such can just be forgotten? In today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's try to find out.

I actually started watching it again a year ago, and got about ten minutes in before I remembered I'd watched it before. I'd agree, an enjoyable bit of fluff, classic popcorn movie. There is no reason to feel bad for enjoying a movie. I liked it as well, never considered it more than 90 minutes of craziness and that works fine for me. All movies dont need to be deep, serious, masterworks of digital art,... or any thing else you can think of within 30 seconds i needed to write this sentence. Sometimes you can even appreciate films for what they are NOT. Yes, this isnt a typical blockbuster. Thats why I remember it.

The scene where Nick gets hit by the car could have been: *gets hit* "H-hey, I'm alive... I'm still ALIVE!!.... Oh.. wait. Crap." As the realization hits that he's truly dead and then Roy can walk over to help him up saying, "Yep, there's a first time for everyone after crossing the threshold. And that there was yours. Still as dead as dead, kid, but we just keep kicking." Just some positive reaction and then that crestfallen moment when reality strikes because it failed to do anything. And then you could see moments later where there are either news articles or footage of the asian guy eating pavement because of the car. Yet he just gets up and walks it off and everyone is left wondering who this invincible or impossibly lucky individual is. Some kind of logical consequence and emotional reaction to it.

It would've been much more emotionally hard hitting if the wife wanted him to keep the gold but he disagreed with her and it resulted in a big fight where he insults her and storms off to return it. Not something that would show her as a bad person, just as a person who understands that money can lead to security. Considering he'd die the same night after storming off it'd make his need to see her again and speak with her again that much more meaningful because dying after a huge fight is the single worst way to go out on a loved one.
