Warner Brothers is back with another new DC movie that replaces a bad one from before, much like was the case with Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League and Josstice League. So let's do the same thing as last time and compare 2021's The Suicide Squad directed by James Gunn to 2016's Suicide Squad not directed by David Ayer, to see if and how it improves on its core flaws, which we covered a couple years ago in the Anatomy of a Failure episode of Suicide Squad. The suicide squad did become a bit of a box office flop though, for various reasons, but because of that interesting to see if Warners will release the Ayer Cut of the original as well or if they've just moved on altogether.

The Suicide Squad (2021)
Welcome Belle Reve prison, where you'll find the worst of the world's worst supervillains. And they'll do anything to get out - even join... Task Force X. Join Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and other weaponized bad-guys on the enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese for a search-and-destroy mission. With only Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) on the ground and Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) government techies in their ears, it's a high stakes game.
-
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
In Zack Snyder's Justice League, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. Suicide Squad (2016)
In this "super-antihero" movie directed by David Ayer (Fury), a team of incarcerated villains -- including Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) -- are recruited by the government for a dangerous mission in exchange for reduced sentences. Jared Leto makes a cameo appearance as the Joker. Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis co-star. Based on the DC Comics series.

And I am still feeling bad about 2016 Squad. It could be a good movie with cool dark, but still bright style with blood, dark humor and badass characters. But something went wrong and we got Joker who was fixed only with Snyder's help, enough characters we don't actually care, okay jokes, but could be better and boring villian with boring motivation. But in 2021 film, James had too much control, because sometimes gory stuff made me bored and petty much childish jokes. But the second part of movie was just perfect.

I went into the cinema with zero expectations. I came out caring very sincerely about a guy committed to peace no matter the cost, a guy raised to be a weapon his whole life, a girl who can control rats, a man covered in explosive polka dots, a shark man thing who can barely string a sentence together, a soldier who had to keep his eye on this merry band of misfits and a gigantic alien starfish who missed his home in space.

That is why he is perfect to run the next wave of DC movies. The heroes in the DCEU were very hard to sympathize with and relate to. Characters most of us grew up watching in cartoons who were relatable and grounded despite their superhuman ability's. @@walloper9972 Well, it wasnt really a waste or power. Harley is just a person, not a super human, same with rick, same with boomer. On top of that, if we assume the last movie happened, they also were proven to be people that actively worked against the main plan, were unreliable. If the last movie didnt happen, than harley is a smart, but loose cannon, boomer doesnt offer much, and rick while a talented soldier, is still just a regular highly trained soldier, of which the military likely has plenty of, but still a leader and someone needed to lead an assualt. Nobody in group A really offered much in terms of power. Group B however contained two people that were extra ordinary in terms of their lethality, but also very mission orientated people, with bloodsport having a unique and powerful arsenal to boot, and peacemaker being the one person waller knew would adhear to the mission, because they could frame the peace side of it. Thats his unique power that set him apart from bloodsport in the beginning when he said they are the same. They werent, Peacemaker would be utterly undetered by any factor to finishing his specific task, destroying evidence. Rat catcher had a versitile skill, and powerful, polkadot man had an insane offensive power, and shark daddy was basically a unstoppable force that could shore up their numbers issue, and to stupid to understand he couldnt have been stopped by waller himself. Squad B had all the actual power, both physical, supernatrual, and most importantly mentally. Squad A didnt have anyone, outside maybe savant, who was going to be able to be relied on to stick to the mission, to do what needed to be done, and not screw around. All of the crazy people or immature people were in squad A.

I thought Harley's portrayal in the film was pretty accurate - in her own crazy way, she strikes a balance between her intentions and her emotions which is reflected in how she fights and when she chooses to fight back. She acted impulsively at first - but after killing the dictator and being tortured for a while, she killed everyone using her skills which she clearly has been honing well - in terms of combat experience, she's up there with Flag and Peacemaker. She can strategise but she can also improvise- the wild card element works very well for Harley. Besides that, this movie was a really good story in itself, despite many characters dying early on - the movie made us care about the characters it simultaneously introduced and Flag's death hit hard, not to mention how devastating it was to lose Polka Dot Man. Plus, yeah, Ratcatcher 2 had the best backstory and her friendship with Bloodsport was simply natural and wholesome.

Polka-Dot Man's death was really sad (and also sudden) for me because the entire film he basically had PTSD of the horrible stuff his mum did, and the fact he didn't like killing people unless he imagined them as his mum. I always interpreted Harley's emotionally driven efficacy being pretty reasonable. I mean she has the raw intelect to be effective, as she clearly wasn't just knowledgable but genuinely inteligent which would explain her being really effective, but Joker then kind of mindwashing her was never written as him literally overwriting her personality or mind, just changing it. By that measure having her be emotionally motivated but extremely detatched while still being extremely effective. Similarly from a writing perspective having her be both fickle and deadly makes her just excellent at preventing predictability in a way that makes sense. Harley as a character has never been about 4d chess sort of prediction or logic, that's, like her entire character, it's someone who was smart but more on edge than she let on and that was then coaxed out by the joker.

I think another small detail that makes this movie so good is that when the team considers getting rid of King Shark, Waller tells them that he is the strongest member of the team, when in reality the strongest member is obviously Polka-Dot Man. Remember, King Shark has bulletproof skin. This means they had no way of putting that bomb in his neck. In the comics, this was solved with a belt that was meant to do the same however it failed. By telling the team that King Shark is necessary and they shouldn't ditch him, Waller was making sure they didn't anger the only team member they had no plan for stopping. Luckily, King Shark is an idiot who didn't know that not everyone liked him on the team so he never decided to get angry except for the time when Bloodsport shot at him. This detail really made me realize Waller is a genius and not just the mean lady telling the protagonists what to do.

Like, you could have a boring “here is a way to completely deactivate whatever makes them hard to contain in the first place” but you could have the “we designed something specific to this uncontainable character.” With the SCP universe, you get a mix of both. The attention to detail sprinkled throughout The Suicide Squad is amazing. For example, Savant is in prison due to Black Canary arresting him so the opening scene where he kills a canary is symbolic to his hatred and wanting for vengeance. The biggest mistake they made was not giving Suicide Squad an R rating. If they did that, it would give them more opportunities to convey what the title promises, and the Pg13 rating hinders their ability to make a ridiculous, entertaining, convincing, gruesome movie. The first film didn't take risks and go all out to give the audience what they wanted and expected. The second film consisted of gory and violent scenes, emotional scenes, a more straightforward plot, character development, effortless subjective comedy, iconic actors who deliver their lines exceptionally well, and comedic relief characters, King Shark and Weasel. @@sarkastikcommander4555 Sorry, bro, but until WB releases the Ayers Cut, the movie we got is the movie we got and it was a poorly executed movie. Criticizing that isn't somehow a moot point just because we know there are other scenes on the cutting room floor. Besides that point, the scenes we got are terrible anyway. Giving Harley to some random gangster to sleep with? What kinda fake edgy crap is that? That has nothing to do with the characterization of the Joker or Harley Quinn. When Harley was introduced in a CARTOON, the Joker would throw her around for successfully capturing Batman and trying to remove his mask, or for over-explaining a joke. In the comics, Harley disappear for months in-story and when she returned, he was so engrossed in planning his latest scheme that he hadn't noticed she'd isolated from the crime world for a few months to GIVE BIRTH TO THEIR DAUGHTER. THAT'S Harley Quinn. That's the story we sympathized with and the woman we wanted to see saved from the Joker. Too much controversial humor, scenes with mother Pea evoked a wild krynge in me, Bloodsport is a copy of Dadshot, Harley no longer delivers, Boomerang was leaked and normal Persians here once again had a Rat Trap. Why is the Thinker here, if instead of him it was possible to slap a rondom scientist with a fool, even in the series "Flash" from The CW, and then they showed him much better (although later they were leaked at the end). Anyway, they should have made a squad like in the animated film "Batman: Attack on Arkham" where the characters were not exaggerated pranksters, but rather vicious, immoral and even slightly depraved personalities who were barely warm to each other and were ready to throw at the first opportunity. And the atmosphere was gloomy but a bit light with a pinch of black humor and no kinks in thrash, but instead they made a cross between the first "Squad", "Legends of Tomorrow" from the aforementioned The CW and "Doom Patrol" spiced by "Guardians of the Galaxy". #ReleaseTheAyercut

It does and doesn't. If anything it highlights the issue of there being 3 people you KNOW are going to make it to the end. Bloodsport, because he is the protagonist they put the most effort into characterising. Harley, because lol they are not killing off their most recognisable name. King Shark, because they want him to sell merch as the "cutesy animal like ally" similar to Groot from Guardians. Throughout the movie I knew those were pretty much safe so it just made me think "Okay so when are they gonna kill off Polka Dot Man or Flag?" I still enjoyed this movie a hell of a lot more but I really wished they didn't just throw Harley in as an additional "name recognition" character since there was no way they'd kill her off because of her popularity.

@@devforfun5618 I highly doubt they'd go to the effort of characterising the only non-white member of their team only to kill him off in the final act (King Shark is Polynesian but played by a white actor so he doesn't even cover that either). Movie King Shark is not anywhere close to Superman's level in this movie considering his feats, he's been injured by things that wouldn't even scratch Supes, he also didn't do a lot to Starro where as Superman is more than strong enough to toss him into space if he wanted to. The only reason he survived is because he is this movies Groot for selling merch, if you look into even just Funko Pop sales (those shitty cheap looking figures) his has already sold out in most places both for the smaller and larger one while the price is jacked up. People love their CGI cute characters that act like animals or toddlers (Groot, Baby Yoda etc) Harley's plot armour is based on luck, not competancy. She's not "smarter than she appears" in this version like she does in the animated series or Arkham games, she's genuinely a ditz who sees the world all warped and only gets by because of luck with her delussions and the people around her helping at the right moments.
