Another note: once the R211Ts have completed testing and are successful, the last option order of 437 cars can be R211Ts. Most people don’t seem to like the R211Ts due to the "homeless situation".

My honest opinion on the R211s: I think they’re unique and very cool to watch. I also think the flip seats are a good thing because it could occupy more space whenever needed. Also I personally think the Big LEDs in the interior are actually a good thing, and the reason to that is because if you’re in the middle of the car and need to see the LED and you’re eye sight isn’t good, you can at least read the text on the display better. Also I enjoy your content, keep up the good work!

London, Vienna and other cities use outside opening doors. The doors can overlap the windows so there can be more windows area. London Transport says they are cheaper and easier to repair and seal better. All MTA trains have much too little window area. I think they are following a template from about 75 years ago.

The R211As are definitely good trains in my opinion. I really like the new LEDs, the wider doors, and the clearer and easier to read strip maps with the next stops posted right on top of the doors on both sides rather than at the center of the train with the previous R models (ex.R160, R179, R143). That is genius engineering on Kawasaki's part. I can't wait to see the R211T gangways and SIR R211S models very soon! These new trains are definitely a big win for passengers and the MTA. And ADA ftw. Although after rewatching your video, I do admit the font does need to be a bit smaller on both the inside and outside so the letters can fit properly. And also they need to update the FIND display maps so that it properly includes all the stops for that subway line. Great video by the way! :)

I rode it over the weekend as well and it was great. However the problem I have as you mentioned is how small the windows are and also, even til now, I wish that the MTA could have least find a way to have incorporated window seats on the R211s. Cause my thing is that a lot of New Yorkers like looking outside or at least comfortable knowing that there are window seats. I just feel like window seats would be better especially on lines that are long commutes

I rode on the R211 during the inaugural trip and I liked it a lot. I love the front of the train & the LED lights on it. I liked how bright it was on the inside, i was impressed with the new FIND strip maps, the red & green colors by the doors, and I like how roomy the train is. It may not have the open gangways, but i felt like i could move around in a way i don’t feel on any other subway train here. The seats are comfortable to me, which leads me to the cons. The only issue was the lack of seats, but I was told by the MTA, it was due to the wider doors to make it more accessible for those in wheelchairs & parents with strollers. That being said, it is a lot easier to board and exit the train with the wider doors. It is what it is & I accept it. There is a lot more that I can see being done on those trains like using the digital screens to provide information. I think we are scratching the surface of what these trains can do. I can’t wait to see this train pass the 30-day Passenger Test so that we can start getting more of these on the road. I’m genuinely excited for the R211A’s & the R211T’s when they finally hit the road. The future is looking bright! 😎

I like the R211. They are great departure from the previous rolling stock. I'm happy to know that the overhead LCD screens are not the final design. The LED next stop is sign font needs to be smaller and have a different color. The traction motor is wonderful and the trucks pretty much sound similar to their predecessor. I also agree with you on the LEDs lights by the doors flashing before the doors close. It could help discourage people to run to the doors when they are closing. Overall these are great subway cars!

I definitely agree about those windows. Yes, it’s something that most people take for granted, but windows are essential especially when there’s an emergency. You can’t see where you are if someone’s big head is blocking the way. These, if the seats weren’t installed would be like the typical early to mid 1900s freight car that you’d find on the Big 4 UK Railways before British Rail was created in 1945.

I recently rode on a R211 A train from West 4th Street to 42nd Street Port Authority. The ride was comfortable, liked the new door lights, and digital display signs for stops and connections. Dislikes: large way point signs were large, and 6 pairs of seats, which seem to be smaller than the ones on the R160, R179 and R142 trains. I do like the new propulsion sounds, and definitely a better sounding ride to reduce noises over-all.

The large text on the overhead screens is great, actually, because the text also cycles to the next line very rapidly, which is most unusual. Think of electronic road signs with three pages of text (CONSTRUCTION AHEAD AT MAPLE ST ... ROAD CLOSED SEPT 12 TO SEPT 14 ... FOLLOW DETOUR SIGNS), but you can never read all of it because it cycles way too slowly. Usually on LCD signs they go the other way and make the text way too small and try to fit too much information in, but the overhead sign is meant to convey the same info as the audio announcements, so it should be a single stream of text, read quickly.

Another way to increase capacity is to run trains as if we’re in a major world city rather than every 15 minutes. I’d be much happier with older trains that allow me to enjoy the view out the window than being crammed into a borderline windowless tube with dental chair lighting. Thinking about these replacing the R68s legit makes me want to cry.

Here’s the problem, in your country London matters politically and gets money from the national government while in the US, NY is neglected because of the way our absurd election system works. In any other country there would be a political incentive for a politician / party to do something about this mess, just not here. All we get are these terrible new cars.

Didn't ride but I would agree with everything you said. The deliberate utilitarian approach that began after the R15 (and I know this from a knowledgable old timer) continues, sadly. This is due to being badly burned by the R-44 and R-46 various debacles (p-wire, lightweight trucks, locked doors). Also the reaction to graffiti and seat slashing (in the late 1950s) is still with us. The substandard PA systems are absolutely INFURIATING! The R42, CTA and PATH PA systems prove that clear and smartly worded announcements are possible. Clearly the powers that be, who seem to rarely ride the system, give not half a shit about this issue or the segment of the public that depends on clear f@cking announcements. The door LEDs are a waste as people are going to do whatever they want interfering with door closings. The one thing I would BEG MTA to reconsider is the SIR seating. All longitudinal seating is simply not appropriate for daily trips much longer than 25 minutes. Its an outdoor line and people (in whatever minority of ridership) should be afforded the opportunity to enjoy the scenic part of their long slogs through the city (literally several hours per week for many years).

The reason for the R211Ts currently only being 20 cars is because 10 cars have a “Hard Shell” passageway thru the gangways and another 10 have a “Soft Shell” passageway thru the gangways, when they enter service in December, the MTA will evaluate both types of passageway designs. If one design goes well, then the Second Option Order might be all R211Ts, with the exception of 4 Car R211s also in the Second Option Order (which might be the As). The first option order has already been exercised for more A types.

when I first looked at this train, something that could make this train better is the addition of open gangways between the carriages. Take the S Stock and class 345 in the UK, instead of being stuck in one overcrowded carriage that's right next to an empty one, instead of having to get off at the next stop and get back on, you can just walk into the next one. Capacity is also increased, another issue with the subway in NYC. also hello from britain

I agree wholeheartedly! It would be great if these cars had the decor of the newer models but with the same length as the r46 and r68 and had their same seating plans with the armrests. It would be awesome also if they had their iconic closing bells that they have on the r46 and the r68 again that were iconic and symbolic over the years with MTA New York City Transit. One other thing that they should have is enhance the signs to have greater pixels to virtually be identical to the role signs of the r68 with the to and from destinations on one panel if those could be exactly the same but it in an advanced LED format that would be totally awesome.

The pros to these changes are to me are the cameras for the regular R211. All the other changes are just different but aren’t really improvements. You’re right. Better improvements would involve the LED displays in the interior giving more details about stops and upcoming service changes in the cars themselves. Hopefully the R211T or whatever the model is with the open gangways will be released soon.

I think the one problem I have with the R211's is that their capacity is lower than that of the R143's and R160's. This means that even if they have CBTC installed, they sadly won't go to Jamaica yard to run on the E, F, and R along the Queens Boulevard, or the G. The R211's will likely go to the A, B, C, D, N, and W. The Q I believe might only operate with R211's during rush hours, but most other times it'll run with R68's displaced from the D, and R68A's from the B, N, and W. The N and W will run with both R68's and R211's all times. The R68A's from the B might be displaced to the Rockaway Park Shuttle as well. So in conclusion, this I believe is what the assignments will be: A/C: R179's and R211's. B/D: R211's only. E: R160's only. F: Same as the F. G: Same as the E and F. J/Z: R160's and R179's (Will run with R143's during rush hours). L: R143's and R160's. M: Same as the E, F, and G (Though I do think it might run with R179's during rush hours though). N/W: R68's and R211's. Q: R68/A's only (Will run with R211's during rush hours). R: Same as the E, F, G, and M (Minus the R179's). Franklin Avenue Shuttle: R68's only. Rockaway Park Shuttle: R68A's only.

I rode it on the first day although I couldn’t enjoy the ride much because of noisy framers, but i love the smooth ride and the different colored seats and the boxed interior lighting which is better than the curvy lighting seen on the R142-R179 car classes, and I also love the overhead CIIS because since I’m nearsighted, their giant font is easy to read, and the small windows reminds me of the R32-R38 in spirit. My biggest dislike is the digital FIND sign above every doors, why? Because its gonna be troublesome when you want to read the FIND sign without interfering with a person who is standing by the doors, they should’ve placed it like how the R160s-R179s have their FIND signs placed differently.

There are two versions of the train the one that is seen here is not the Open gangway type it's the R211A the one that resembles a BMT Triplex Open Gangway train is the R211T inaugural run 8th Avenue line Express A train or Queens Boulevard line

Now I don’t necessarily have an issue with the wider doors, I like the idea behind it. However I wonder it if was possible to make the cars slightly longer that way we would have more seats and wider windows, maybe this is just an idea for future designs.
@mmeysarosh
@mmeysarosh Жыл бұрын
Car length is a specific engineering design as longer cars require turns with more a more open radius to make the turn. This existing rails restrict the maximum length of the cars and I believe we see two, 60ft and 75ft. The doors could be segmented, which could reduce the pocket depth, but would likely require added packet depth and a more complex mechanism. Considering the practice to hold doors, I would likely want to avoid a more complex mechanism.

I think the MTA is going to the 60 ft cars so that the equipment can be used allover the system not just the IND

I rode on the his train on Sunday and the ride was pretty good and smooth. The tech needs a little more improvement but it's not so bad. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed that they change the first option order to r211a instead of t's in which I was hoping we see more of the trains with open gangway and less of the standard cars

Flip up seats should be modified because when people use them, the person in the wheelchair is blocking the doorway. I suggest to the MTA to make the flip up seats controlled by c/o or t/o which will make things easier.

Rode the R211 today and I loved it. Ride was very smooth and not many people were on. I don’t see why the design is “controversial” but I like it. Definitely prefer open gangway!

I am still weary of the open gangway considering the amount of safety issues with the subway. At certain times of the day/evening I would wait for a different train. I rode them in London but London doesn’t have our issues.

It would be a lot better if the headlights were round like the original cars instead of linear and color changing LEB bulbs. They should also have the R110B Chime as the doors opening chime and the R110A as the doors closing chime.

For Everyone replying Queens Boulevard has high ridership and CBTC is already installed there, the R211's have higher capacity than the R160's by removing the corner seats and reduced seats for more room/standing capacity we can fit more people into each train car plus the wider doors which reduce dwell times are people can load and offload faster and more safely with wider doors plus QBL is routinely crowded which the (E) and (F) have those two criterias, High ridership and CBTC once again Queens Blvd is a line with high ridership, behind the Canarsie Line and Flushing Line. Therefore it would make more sense for the R211's out of the option orders to go to Jamaica Yard. Fleet assignments are based on CBTC installations and Fleet Age to some extent, with CBTC taking priority. A line like the 8th Avenue (A) and (C) trains do have old cars, and are in the process of getting CBTC. Therefore, it would be beneficial to get R211 cars. In contrast, you have lines like the Broadway Line (N/W) and (Q) that are using old cars, but are NOT earmarked for CBTC installation. Therefore, it would be unwise to send R211's over to all these lines. Now you have the open gangway trains. A big increase in space compared to the R160, a third criteria has been added. high ridership. As mentioned before Queens Boulevard has high ridership and crowding on the (E) and (F) routes is prominent. Given that QBL already has CBTC and these two lines have high ridership, so it makes sense to have R211's go over there, with the R160 cars offloaded onto lower volume lines. It really makes zero sense for train cars of higher capacity (R211's) to be assigned with lower ridership volumes while high ridership lines get stuck with lower capacity cars (R160's). It doesn't really match. By doing the assignments in the way I mentioned with the R211's also considered for the (E) and (F) things become more efficient. having open gangway trains on QBL we can increase capacity and squeeze more people into each train car by 10% which equates to more standing capacity that's even more room for people to stand and by removing the corner seats and reduced seats combined with wider doors and is CBTC Equipped therefore it's beneficial to put open gangway trains only on lines that have high ridership and are routinely crowded like the (A), (E) and (F), you get the saying less furniture equals more room and if you knock out a wall that's even more room for people to stand that's why the R211T's have much higher capacity. Remember, just because the R211's are replacing the R46 cars DOES not mean that they only have to go to lines with these cars. It is definitely okay to assign these cars to lines that don't even have old cars like Jamaica and offload the cars from said yard to the yards with older cars. Remember, in the MTA the oldest trains don't always get directly replaced with newer trains. There's a lot more to it

The MTA is so hesitant to adopt technologies that are widely used in the rest of the world. Nearly all new rolling stock elsewhere has plug doors, which can be wider without affecting the size of the windows, and open gangways.

It doesn't even look like a new train inside. In some pics, it looks like an R179 or R160. But great observations and it'll do. Time to stop with the wider doors and open up the visibility. In fact, after the R211s and R260s, time to break the mold and make a truly new design.
