We were honoured to be able to attend the Gibson Motorsport 30-year reunion of the Group A R32 Skyline GT-R at the Shannons Auction Showroom in Melbourne. All four chassis were there, enabling us to get up close and personal with them, plus meet and speak with ex-mechanics and the man behind it all, Fred Gibson. Drivers Mark Skaife and Jim Richards were also in attendance and gave some speeches about the cars. Big thanks to Kingsley for letting us attend and all his help.

These R32's particularly in the Nissan warpaint are automotive God's. What a gathering of people and machinery. Mark Skaife's face when Jim Richards called the crowd "a pack of arseholes" in 92, Neil Crompton gave the crowd the middle finger on the same podium. Even as a kid I knew it was pure gold!

Yeah, to those of us a bit older like myself- it's just part of Aussie car culture. They're been around in such numbers here for so long, there's always been a huge enthusiast scene for them and all their RB powered cousins... They've just matured like fine wine over here, their cult car status will never die

The Skaife car was found in Thailand by Carey McMahon a good few years ago, brought back and restored by him and my mate Rod Starr. He should never have sold it, even at the 7 figures he got. Worth soooo damn much now, pretty sure Nissan has offered well over 8 figures for it since

A beautiful piece of nostalgia! Sure, "my hat's off" to Fred Gibson and the team but, by far the biggest reason for this car's success is in the opening narration of the video - "the R32 GTR was designed from the outset to go Group A racing and win." In essence, Nissan took the rule book and asked themselves, what did their car need to beat the Sierra? Answer - 6 instead of 4 cylinders, twin turbo instead of one and the trump card, AWD instead of RWD! A recipe that was always going to be hard to top. Is it any wonder Larry Perkins called it a race car and not a touring car and from memory, Dick Johnson also commented along the lines that the GTR had more rubber pulling it around a corner than a formula 1 car.

My dream is to take two of the Gibson R32's and an R31, as well as a Bluebird to Japan for Nissan Day at Fuji Speedway. Have Mark and Jim drive, if at all possible as well. That would be something truly unique and for Japanese Nissan fans, something they might never ever see again. Of course, i'll need a lotto win and some influential friends, but one can dream.

Thank you for sharing this. I fondly remember watching both Skaifey and Richo steer these weapons around Bathurst, Oran Park and Amaroo Park. Even though we’re talking 30 years ago, it only seems like yesterday. These cars were years ahead of their time and were the best racing examples in the world, driven by arguably 2 of the best drivers ever to race touring cars. It was a privilege to say I watched them race and win.

@@trn8061 It won on a technicality bud- if we're being really honest. Being a wet race that year, the 4WD system put the GTR's on a different level drivability wise.
