Radeon R9 290 vs Nvidia GTX 970 revisited in 6 Games @ 1440p
If you're considering making the jump to 1440p then the Radeon R9 290 and Nvidia GTX 970 make excellent budget choices for high settings in most titles at 1440p resolution
These two graphics cards have been trading blows for years so which should you consider buying in 2017?
Due to the Crypto-Currency Boom Nvidia's GTX 970 may prove to be the cheaper option on the second hand market as it can provide 20M/hs compared to the Radeon R9 290's 30 M/hs.
So the R9 290 is the stronger mining card, but is it still the stronger gaming card lets find out.
So the popular titles which we will be testing today include:
Crysis 3 @ 1:37
Skyrim Special Edition @ 2:27
Rise of the Tomb Raider @ 3:20
Dark Souls 3 @ 4:15
The Witcher 3 @ 5:01
Shadow of Mordor @ 5:55
All games were tested @ 1440p resolution on high to very high/ultra settings depending on how the games ran.
Test System:
Intel i5 6600k @ 4.6GHz
G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4 16GB @2666Mhz
Superflower Golden Green HX 650 watt PSU

300watt? My r9 290 trix rig has a total of 330 watt max with a full size mobo a 77watt cpu, 3x120mm fans , 2 hdds and all the other components. R9 290 draws 200-210 watt at max 100% load. Be honest..

Twisted Skinz Tech great video! When is the follow-up video with newer titles coming? I prefer the graphs, since side-by-side is sometimes hard to follow and the 1% and 0.1% dips in FPS are hard to notice. I found this video when I found R9 290 with waterblock for just 100€!! and I'm gonna use it in my secondary computer :)

I had a r9 290 from release til end September 2017. Can't believe it is competitive with a 970gtx. An nvidia high end card from a later generation!!!! I hope AMD will repeat this, this is why I got a vega 64 (I want my GPU to get me 4 years worth of gaming) @ msrp.

Yeah, I considered it already. But - because I want to game - then I should buy another expensive 1080, 1080ti or vega... So it's kind of self defeating.

The R9 290/R9 390 and GTX 970 were always competitors during the production run of the Nvidia card. As you can see they're still neck and neck.

Already gaming close to 3 and a half years on a 970 with no issues. I think for running an R9 290 long-term power draw and temps should be a consideration since they will shorten the card's life not to mention the diminished overclocking potential of the 290 compared to the 970.

I think used 970s are the best price/performance right now. I see them going for $150 sometimes!

Michael Summerlin If you can get one for that price then they're a steal. In in England they seem to be going up again they where around £140 before Xmas now seeing them go for around £165 on eBay.

Nice video, I reckon you would be better off with a R9 290 because of AMD's finewine technology, Nvidia really doesn't care that much about their older GPU's.

Rexzii 😁 The truth, get whichever card you can purchase the cheapest. Both cards were tested at stock, so overclocking largely gets rid of any negatives. If there is no difference in price, do you play more DX12 games? R9 290. Do you play mostly Nvidia sponsored titles? GTX 970. Glad you enjoyed it dude.

Eryk Królasik that depends if the R9 290x is 15% - 20% less than GTX 980. Which about their performance difference. Also worth a mention is if power consumption is a factor, the 980 will definitely be more power efficient.

i dont care about power consumption and i just found a gtx 780ti lightning for 50% of the r9 290x's price and it performs better and a little worse than a gtx 980 what do you think about this ?

Eryk Królasik the 780ti is still a decent card if it's half the price of the R9 290x then that seems pretty good for price to performance. 3GB of Vram is enough for most modern titles and the lighting edition is probably one of the best overclockers.

So year older card that was made to compare with gtx7xx series is now comparable to gtx9xx series and it matching it in games finewine is no bs

TheLTGamer If that is an option for you then the R9 290 will definitely be an upgrade from the GTX 1050ti, however bear in mind you will want at least a 500 watt 80+ PSU as it's no where near as power efficient. Something from EVGA, Corsair, Seasonic or Coolermaster would do the trick.

In 6 months, you will already have burned the price difference from electricity bill, making R9 290 look retarded compared to the 1050ti. Just go with GTX 1060 3GB or GTX 970, if you are on low budget.
