Today is "International Women's Day" so naturally I'm watching a woman talk about butthole Botox and how to properly enlarge holes 😁 I'm loving that this project is so much more than just an engine swap. This car is going to be amazing and one of a kind! No need to apologize about not getting everything done in one video, it's much more entertaining and educational to watch the entire process without any "that's close enough" cob jobs. Plus, this gives us all something to look forward to for next time.

They make Weld Thru Primer. Spray it on first in thin layers. Then weld. Protects surfaces you can't get to after you are done. Also if you are still nervous about rust after you are done. You could spray cavity wax behind the wheel wells after the welding is finalized.

Those "pilot point" bits don't work well if you've made a pilot hole with another bit. Stick with regular angle pointed bits and you won't risk tearing materials so much. Edit: When you grind off primer to weld, spray on weld-through primer to protect the surface from future rust.

The first car I ever bought was a '76 Celica GT, so I have a soft spot for 70's Toyota's. Great video! Edit: I am not horrified by you cutting the fenders. I drove my Celica in Michigan winters until the mid 80's. The front fenders were rusted so bad that they would flap like bird wings when semi's would pass by on the other lane.

Hi Sarah I love watching your videos. So I used to work in an aircraft factory, we built a lot of Kevlar and fiberglass parts and what we used to use when we needed to make holes bigger were reamers bits. They'll give you a nice smooth even hole without risk of fracturing the material. Maybe give that a try next time You're working with fiberglass or anything like that. Thank you for your service and your videos.

I had a 1976 Celica in HS. It was only 10yrs old and somehow it was in 10x worse shape than this one. It was doo doo brown with a black vinyl top, probably to hide damage. Pretty sure that car was 50% Bondo, and 50% rust. I paid $300 for it though, and I drove it 3 years until I gave it to a friend when I moved away. Awesome build video, wish I still had mine, and your energy to rebuild it.

It's probably done now but holding a piece of thick copper behind the holes you are filling will make your job easier. The weld won't stick to the copper. Weld/braze/solder the copper to a length of steel rod. Rod can be bent to allow you to position the copper plate.

If you get a STD twist drill and hold it vertically up say. Then approach the cutting edge holding a grinder vertical as well and just brush it cutting edge by say a mm (40 thou) and up the edge of the flute. On both cutting edges. It will drill plastic nicely without grabbing. Works especially well on perspex and lexan.

If you use a rattle gun or spanners, bolt and nut instead of the standard gun. You can eliminate the flex or stretching of your panels. You definitely want to think about widening your wheel base!. Love the old things but they did end up on their roof quite often down here!

We always used a tapered hand reamer to enlarge holes in fiberglass, for dzus fasteners. Also when welding up the holes from the moulding, I found it helpful to dimple the hole in slightly before welding, to minimize the amount of grinding necessary to smooth it later, and any warping goes inward. Also helps to use a copper backing plate, behind the weld, not easy on a fully assembled car.

Step drill bits are a life changer when drilling composites and thin sheet metal. A standard 1/8 - 1/2" will cover most of your needs, but some of the larger ones can come in very handy if you need to make a clean hole for wire bundles.

This is awesome. Really glad you're taking the time to weld up excess holes. Doing it right means it won't have to be done right again a few years from now. If I may make a suggestion if you haven't already considered it, Sarah: re-form the lip on the front fenders where you made your cutouts. A hammer & dolly or flanging pliers will do the job. That lip at the wheel opening is a structural part of the fender. Keep up the great work! This is going to be great!

Also, to prevent blow outs when welding the small holes on the body, get a flat piece of copper to put behind. The weld doesn't stick to it and it dissipates the heat quickly which stops blow outs. I just use a piece of copper pipe that I hammer flat. It will make the weld area behind flat and takes much less time to fill all those little holes.
