Thank you kindly Chuck. Hope I don't disappoint. Boy oh Boy winter is having a hard time sticking here. Snow then rain and repeat... Hard to set out snares when you can't travel on the land... 4-5 feet of snow in the hills but you have to trailer or sled into the snow on muddy roads...

LOL. Yes it can be tough going if you get a bad batch of wire, like I said in the video I've had great success with the 22 gauge brass wire until last year and maybe it's as simple as I've gotten my hands on a bad batch of wire.
@barrylangdonoutdoors
@barrylangdonoutdoors 8 ай бұрын
Much the same here, hunting and fishing in my family for years. Definitely sounds like a bad batch of wire, I never did like the brass wire but that's a bit much for sure. My family always used the picture cord, less strands now of course but I find it easier to work with. The smaller crossbars do help I believe. All the best!
@NLGhostWolf
@NLGhostWolf 8 ай бұрын
brass is very easy to work with as well and when it tarnishes it turns a brown colour and blends in so well. But the picture cord turns a nice dark greyish and blends well also. I've been using picture cord for 50 years as well as stainless, and brass. Basically we never had a lot of money so we used whatever we could get our hands on in those days. And we re-used it over and over until we could no longer use it. It was different times and we needed the food.

Finally a snaring video! Been looking forward to it Charlie since we have no snow on the ground yet here in southeast Alaska if you can believe it. Makes it tough to get rabbits! Congrats on the Radio Show!!! Way to go. On the weak brass wire.. I'd bet that if a roll of brass wire was heated quite hot and then buried it in ashes and allowed to cool over a day's time or longer, it would significantly increase the tensile strength of the brass due to the annealing process...just an idea.. Cheers from Alaska, looking forward to more videos.
@NLGhostWolf
@NLGhostWolf 8 ай бұрын
Would that make the wire brittle for twisting? It would be interesting to try the annealing process.
@SaileAway
@SaileAway 8 ай бұрын
@@NLGhostWolf Not sure, only one way to find out! I have a feeling it would make it less brittle though. I've not ever had to use brass as stainless is legal here

If it's legal try incorporating some brass fishing swivels into your length of wire then they can't twist the wire in two
@NLGhostWolf
@NLGhostWolf 8 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if it is legal to use swivels but that would definitely reduce loses due to twisted breakages. Wonderful idea.

Charlie picture cord wire has an excellent catch rate . The major downfall is time , takes a lot longer to set . You’d have bad nerves trying to set up a big line . But for a small line and your in no rush it’s perfect
@NLGhostWolf
@NLGhostWolf 8 ай бұрын
great point, I wish they would zone wire regulations to areas where their are pine Martens. Some places on the island you won't see a pine marten track, other areas a heavily populated with them. But I guess to be fair to the wildlife's discussion on the wire restrictions it's much simpler to police this way.
@scotthayward996
@scotthayward996 8 ай бұрын
I took part In a survey with wildlife before they changed the regulations. The brass wire they sent me was awesome, no breaks and could be reset with multiple rabbits caught on the same set . I’m not sure now of the gauge or even the brand as it was a few years ago . Like you said here on the Avalon I haven’t in my lifetime seen a Martin track alone a Martin.
@scotthayward996
@scotthayward996 8 ай бұрын
Wildlife says it was an inferior batch of wire that had poor tensile strength that was sold throughout the province. There is a write up about it in the hunting and fishing guide . They said they will make recommendations to retailers as what should be sold as snare wire
@NLGhostWolf
@NLGhostWolf 8 ай бұрын
I had gotten my wire through the wildlife as part of the marten program. It was the wire they recommended... But like I said earlier in the clip I had experienced outstanding success prior to that new roll I used last year. Something must have went wrong in the manufacturing process of that roll...
@scotthayward996
@scotthayward996 8 ай бұрын
Charlie that’s unfortunate definitely a bad batch of wire . Even with the best quality brass wire they say it’s around 75 % retention of rabbit and 90 % of the Marten go free .Congrats on the radio show , I will definitely be listening. I really think the educational program you have done in the schools is truly amazing.

Hi Charlie I'm just starting out and I really appreciate your videos. I'm in NW Minnesota and I am using your fisherman's snare on blind trail sets I have my snares assembled before I go out with the string attached to my wire. It's 20 gauge stainless. My problem is I can't wrap the wire around a branch to get rid of the scent and because I'm afraid it may lead to breaks plus no pine trees on my property. So my solution is a bunch of pine needles in a ziplock baggie along with the snares to try to fix that. Any thoughts? Thanks for all you do to put out this great content.
@NLGhostWolf
@NLGhostWolf 8 ай бұрын
I show in one of my videos how to rub them on a branch once fully assembled, but truthfully you don't need to. I've caught 100's of rabbits over the years where I never rubbed them on branches prior to setting. Thanks for following and I will have a treat for you in the new year. I'll be taking 24 students out on the land and they will be setting and checking the snares. Skinning and cleaning the rabbits, and preserving and cooking the meat. Any surplus rabbits will be shared with the elders....

I have another question Charlie. I'm having trouble loading my snares. The fine line between too much load and not enough. Sometimes I can't get my snares to hold the set and they fire without touching them so I play with the angle of the eye and then they won't fire at all. Am I on the right track and just need more practice or am I missing a step Thank you for all you do for us and also I am very proud that you look out for your elders. Your a good lad.

Definitely a big cat, the picture cord was definitely larger in the past or more strands I guess which made it bigger, plus the strands were an heavier gauge. Congrats on the new CBC gig, that's awesome will definitely be tuning in and giving you support. Congrats on the grouse and rabbit.
@NLGhostWolf
@NLGhostWolf 8 ай бұрын
Thank-you, yes you are 100% correct. I wish I would have counted the number of strands in the old picture wire. I know we would be able to catch rabbits and reuse the wire to catch more. We never had a lot of money growing up so we used whatever we could get our hands on. For me brass was the wire I used most, but sometimes it was stainless or picture cord. And let me tell you, we would use and reuse those snares over and over as much as possible. With today's wire it's a one and done process now to be safe.

For sure, some years the supply of brass snare wire is inferior. I recently purchased some at Good Buddy Sports and it is the best I’ve used in a while. Say it’s recommended by Wildlife division. Great informative video.
@NLGhostWolf
@NLGhostWolf 8 ай бұрын
Yes, the wire recommended by wildlife is truly the best brass wire I've used and it shapes nicely. I've been using that wire for a long time now, however the roll of wire I used last year from them must have been under or over cooked in the manufacturing process because I never experienced breakages like that before.
