I was surprised to see a big male Raccoon chase down and attack a male feral cat on the trail camera in the "jungle" behind the Backyard. It looked and sounded bad for the cat as the Raccoon overtook it from behind. Filmed with Campark T100 Trail camera at: shrsl.com/3nk7d

I lived in an old house in a salt marsh for a year in my 20's and had a problem with raccoons getting on my porch and eating my 140lb dog's food in front of him. ...Which was very embarrassing for both of us. That ended the night the semi-wild, part domestic/part bobcat that I tried to adopt stumbled across the scene and dove into the three raccoons from the top railing of the porch. The work that cat put in and the look on his face while he did it made me seriously rethink all my attempts at petting him...

As the former father of a late raccoon and cat, I can tell you first hand that raccoons have quite a bit of fear of and respect for cats. A raccoon is tough as nails and will fight to the death and they'll often win against any other animal, including large dogs and even people if provoked. But a raccoon will back off from a swinging cat slapping them in the face with claws-a-blazing. We take cats for granted but they're an amazing animal capable of incredible feats. They are, after all, small scale lions, tigers and leopards.

I have a couple feral cats I feed and the raccoons and the cats chill and get along….occasionally in the middle of the night I’ll hear one of those cats raising hell though. They are Siberian Forrest cats and are badass…the female, Momma Dukes, is almost 30lbs….she had kittens 2 yrs ago and a fox kept getting near the shed where she and her babies were and that Fox was found dead the next morning

My observation is a cat can usually handle twice his weight in dog. It's hard to understand this until you've tried to bathe a 9 lb cat. It would take both my wife and myself to handle our Himalayan. At one point I let down my guard and my cat buried his fangs all the way to the gum line in my arm. Nice kitty, but water freaked him out. A racoon sized dog wouldn't stand a chance.

Starting around 2:10 you can see the open wounds the cat left on the raccoon that the raccoon is cleaning up. The cat appears to have made a complete recover now about a week after this incident as has the raccoon. Around 4:10 you can see the cat spray its scent right where the raccoon and bobcat spray so he's continuing to mark his territory. Because of the high density of wildlife and the cats nocturnal habit it is pretty much impossible to trap this cat for neutering and taking to a no kill shelter, but it may not be adoptable. I've tried trapping in the past and all you'll catch is possum after possum. If the cat were to come into the backyard in the daytime I'd be able to catch it, but its a true feral and I've only seen it once at dusk near the fence. I should post a video on this cats heritage and history in the future. BB

We had a huge Tom cat. He was 16 inches at the shoulder and almost 5 ft long including his tail. I could only think he had some rag doll breed in his genes. That’s what the vet thought. The vet loved seeing him as he was “by far” the biggest domestic cat the vet had ever seen. The vet at that time was about 30 years into his career. The cat would get in scraps with whatever was out there. It was long before any digital cameras. Sometimes the wounds would abscess so we would take him in as well as for his shots. He had a knack for simply killing the raccoons he came across. He actively sought them out, chased them down and annihilated them! They would get the occasional bite on him of course, but he didn’t care. His claws would leave wounds an inch deep. He wouldn’t eat them though. He ate basically everything else he killed, but not raccoons. He seemed to like rabbits especially. All of that, yet he would come home each night, often to a bath that he sought out. Would walk into the tub and meow until we cleaned him. He slept with us, or the nieces and nephews when they came over. Even babies would lay against/on him and sleep and he would just purr. Gentle with everyone except my brother who used to torment him. They had an understanding, it seems. People would come to visit and some were scared of him and his size!!! Hahaha. He was intimidating because he had scruffy ears from his rough lifestyle. His kittens were normal though. We spay and neutered the offspring and kept one female for kittens. Feral cats have a rather high mortality rate until they are a few years old. Owls, coyotes, bobcats, possibly the bears and cougars would get one. The Tom cat had put a few bears on the run that came into the yard including a huge old boar Grizzly that got too close when we were out fencing. The cats were and are still some of the best rodent controls. We live in Alberta Canada so we don’t have rats, fortunately, but mice & voles are common of course. That cat lived 14 years and 13 3/4s were really perfect for his tastes, but then he went downhill fast. He survived a rattlesnake bite, but never fully recovered. He lounged in the house until one day we found him sleeping in the sun for his last time. He was still curled up so just went in his sleep. No apparent pain. That was a tough loss. He was the closest thing to a dog I ever had, except our dogs of course, and he was far from typical fir any cat we knew, including his offspring,,,,,. One of a kind,,,,,

A racoon will usually whoop a cat. But not always. One thing to consider is that all these animals learn to fight by experience. Some have a great advantage just because they have done so much more fighting than their opponent. I will never forget my kid's favorite cat "tiffany" She was an average sized white female cat. But Tiffany was the baddest fighting machine cat Ive ever seen. I saw her destroy huge male cats, racoons, large dogs. One time she fought 3 dogs at once and they all ran away yelping. She could scratch you 5 times in one second and her bites took chunks of skin away. She even attacked people sometimes if you were mean to her Kittens. I never saw her lose a fight or even back down from one.

I once had a huge outside tom named Bob, because of his bobtail. He was quite friendly with humans but didn't brook any other company in his territory. My aunt had a tom that was truly big. Sam. He was tough in the extreme. Lived a long time through their multiple moves. I was told not to pet him because he didn't like it. As a young boy, of course I tried. He would let me pet him for several seconds and then he would change. Mostly I learned not to try. Gave him space and watched him. He was known to put much bigger dogs(of all kinds) to flight. All black with an attitude. He would lose weight in the spring because he would eat too many lizards. Beautiful animal that I always respected. He was mostly Uncle Paul's cat & had his own space on the living room couch (Uncle sat in a chair), which we all yielded to him when he came in. But then, Uncle was a different type of man. He lied about his age to go to war at 15. Grandpa went at 17. Apparently real men cause real things to happen, even in what they considered lesser animals. Uncle & Grandpa didn't always agree, but even when they were older, you didn't want to stop them or interfere. They were fast. They lived hard and expected a lot from those around. Sam may have been a tom, but he seemed to command respect. Life lessons expressed concisely as I know it.

Yes Felis Catus is pound for pound one of the most Ferocious animals on the planet. Their natural abilities are without question, and are a joy to behold in their play, and witnessed taking down of wild jackrabbits to feed their young when they needed further nutritional supplementation for their young. Once leaving an exactly sagittal sectioned half the rabbit remaining as if cut by a band saw to be seen at our front doorstep to finish later. She; Pugg, was one of our most incredible cats that ever shared her life with us. She was a short very well propositioned bob tailed longer rear legged dark grey green black tiger stripped cat who had several litters when she was alive with us. I think fondly think of her often, for no animal regardless of size entered our area without her permission, she was such a joy to our family and so lovingly remembered… . Thank you for this showing this footage. I saw how sure this cat was when allowing the Raccon to catch up to it, and was most telling, I caught that little bit, like it wasn’t really afraid but moving for a more open area to free up do business.

The raccoon has the advantage in biting, but raccoon claws are designed for climbing while cat claws are meant to hold and slice flesh. Their curvature allows them to dig in deeper as they’re slicing. Plus cats have very loose skin and are so flexible that they can twist while in the grip of another animal and inflict some nasty cuts. Many animals that kill cats end up getting in a fight they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. Most of the time it’s better for them just to find a different meal. Protecting young is about the only time they’ll push the matter.

I watched an encounter on my front porch recently between a semi-feral tom cat and a raccoon. The raccoon came up to get some cat food. The semi-feral tomcat was growling and wailing loudly which is what made me come and look. His back was arched, his fur was puffed out, and he reached out and swatted the raccoon's backside three quick times. The racoon ignored him, so he did it again. Apparently second round of swats scored a hit, and the raccoon took off running across my front yard with the tom cat chasing him. His take off scattered the cat food all over the porch.

I had a feral silver tabby that we called Barbie. She was found hanging from a barb wire fence emaciated and close to death with her tail practically cut off hence the name Barbie. She was completely wild when we adopted her. I was only 8 at the time but I knew she was special very quickly. She would climb trees with me and was always just one branch ahead of me staring down on me and making sure I was OK. She would hoard all of my favorite Legos and hide them in the pillow where she slept by my bed. As I got older and snuck out to keg parties on the rail road tracks over 3 miles away I would catch glimpses of her stalking me in the distance, always keeping an eye on me and making sure I was OK. Without fail, everything time I came home after a party she was waiting at my outside window, staring at me with those knowing eyes to be let in to sleep next to me on her uncomfortable, Lego ridden pillow..😆

That's sad! I agree with you. Raccoons are tough creatures, and they can be dangerous. I've even seen videos of juvenile cougars struggling to kill them. They can fight back hard against both cats and dogs, and they usually grow bigger than cats. They're equipped with sharp teeth, and I once heard a narrator explain some have learned to wrestle and drown dogs in ponds. There was a video on KZfaq (IDK if it's still on here) where a guy got three dogs to tear into a raccoon. It was squealing in terror cause they were pulling from three different directions, and the duration of the raccoon to still live stunned me. I once saw one coming down the block and I went in the street around cars to avoid it. Anyway, I agree with you. PS: I found the video. It's still on KZfaq.

I worked at an exotic animal rescue facility that had lions and tigers and some feral cats hung around and we feed them too. Then one day the kittens of the fetal cats started being killed and some of the grown feral cats as well. We had no idea what was happening. Then, one morning we found a full grown dead raccoon in the lion enclosure. It had gotten too close to the opening where we feed the lions and one if the males had to have reached out and clawed him and pulled it in. After that, no more cats were killed. It had to be the raccoon killing them until he was killed by one of the lions himself. Lions don't play.

I walk one of my cats on a leash and harness. I’ve had 4 incidents. As I sat outside on my patio set and my cat jumped down from my neighbor’s patio set, I felt something nudge my right leg. I looked down and it was a raccoon, possibly using the cat hammock (cat never used it anyway), who wanted to meet my cat. I think it was young and not necessarily harmful. But, it didn’t stop me from jumping up and screaming, which caused it to run off. The next was my cat hunting for Katydids on trees. He went around the back of a tree and I heard all sorts of wild noises. I yanked him back by the leash, he yowled at me and, when I looked up, there was a raccoon peaking out, from behind the tree. I had such an absolute meltdown, because I wasn’t yet sure if my cat was injured, that the raccoon wanted out of there and ran down the street. Because I understand how rabies works, I rushed my cat to the emergency vet and got him a rabies booster, to the tune of $200. It he had no scratches or injuries, fortunately. One was a black vulture. I think it was somewhat young and hungry. I swooped down, with me standing next to my cat and I literally spread my wings, to divert the vulture and it did. But, it was hungry, returned and landed, walking towards us, picking up cigarette butts, waiting for me to hand over my cat. Since that wasn’t going to happen, I knew I might have to go to jail as, they’re federally protected. But, it flew off, when it heard my neighbor’s balcony door open. Just a few weeks ago, 2 black vultures crashed into one another, swooping down on me and my cat, from behind. They were not successful. It was a good lesson, however. There are many ways animals disappear. Other than humans, there are coyotes and other animals, some cats disappear into the street drains and some disappear into the sky. It is why my cat is not let out on his own.

Raccoons tend to be extremely bold but not typically very aggressive unless they feel threatened. Chances are the raccoon felt aggressed to be encountered face to face in the small space.

Big tomcats can be up to 20lbs of pure muscle. They can hold their own. The big stray tomcat that lived in my neighborhood once sent a 60+ pound lab mix running for the hills. Keep in mind, the dog initiated everything. Dog started it, cat won it.

This was enlightening for me because I have had 20 rabbits in home made rabbitats for about 3 years. I’ve had a regular raccoon visitor that never bothered the rabbits. But feral cats have come into my yard in attempts to take baby bunnies. One succeeded because my porch screen had separated from its twining at one spot. I’ve also had a 2 night coyote visit complete with the yip yip sounds, on the outside of my fence, but no rabbit casualties. At the time, I could hear that same vicious raccoon sound, so I concluded that a coyote caught a raccoon on those 2 nights. The sound was terrifying!

The raccoon probably had babies somewhere close by and that's why it went full attack mode because the cat would definitely have no problem eating a baby raccoon. Idk just a guess on why the raccoon got so aggressive.
@myrtlelittle4130
@myrtlelittle4130 Жыл бұрын
Possible, that's just animal life. Feral cats will kill and eat baby cats too and the result is that the mother will cycle more quickly into heat so he can breed his own batch with her. The coon was the only one making a noise. The cat emitted no sounds of fear or aggression. Coon lost the fight.

That’s one tough kitty! When they are just chilling on your lap purring while you watch TV or going nuts over catnip, it’s easy to underestimate just how much punch they can pack. Probably surprised the hell out of that raccoon too. I really don’t think it would go the same with a bobcat. My money would be on the bobcat. They have the same weaponry but they are much bigger and heavier.

Exactly, a bobcat is a bigger cat so if they're equal on a lb for lb basis the bobcat wins due to more lbs.

I befriended a pregnant stray cat once. Fed her, made a cot for her to have her babies but she didn’t feel safe and ended up choosing a nook on the roof of my house. Every day I went up to feed her and give her fresh water. One night I heard a terrible fight and rushed up to the roof and helped chase off three large raccoons. I found momma cat at the entrance of her nook, with a tuft of raccoon fur in her mouth. After that I brought a lawn chair up to the roof and stood vigil with her ever night. She would come out of her den land sit next to me, sometimes rubbing up against my leg. She would have 5 beautiful kittens and brought them into our house one by one. I found good homes for three, but kept two and the mom here at home. Strangely enough she has very little desire to go outside, and has become a very loving cat. So are her children.
