You definitely did SA justice. The Knysna episode was so epic and your landtour by far left most camperers in the dust. Do hope to see you guys back there one day :-) Always great to hear from you. Wishing you safe and happy travels!

My #1 thing I keep onboard for hull intrusions is various sized pieces of 1/4 thick wood. I keep moisture curing calking, sheets of plastic, and a drill with screws with it. The goal with a hull intrusion is to quickly slow the water down so the bilge pump can keep up. Slap the wood on from the inside with the drill. After that you can get in the water and have someone pass you another piece of wood covered in calking with plastic stuck to the calking. you cover the other side of the plastic with calking and quickly press it over the hole, and then screw it in. (your drill probably won't work underwater so you need a waterproof one or you do it the hard way).

Just the best information. I've just done a lot of sailing and I'm still learning from you guys. For the canvas wrap over a cracked hull. (Of course see the movie In Harms Way where skipper John Wayne does this on a WWII destroyer). Here's a data point. I built a wooden kayak, then I cut two 4" (100mm) bulkheads out of medium density foam. They were carefully and accurately cut, oversized.they were so tight it took me over an hour each to mallet hammer them into position. Tight. No light around the edges. I figured, good enough for sea trials, and seeing if I should move them fore or aft.... caulk the edges later. Got rolled by a tricky reflected wave. My hull filled up like those bulkheads weren't even there. 20-30 cm max submersion so not that much pressure. Totally surprised me. Of course I'd do the canvas, but at best I would expect it to only slow the water coming in, buy some time, give the pumps -- or the foam (I like that) a chance to work. I'd try to put a think squishy yoga mat over the hole first if possible. (I use yoga mats for everything except yoga.) Take photos of your freezer/fridge layers as you load up. Then when it's all frosted over and you're looking for the lamb chops, you just flip through the photos to find out what layer they're on. Also photos of what's in the hatches and cupboards (Make a label that will be in the images saying which bilge hole/cabinet it is. Fastest way to make an inventory. I left my puffy coat home (stinks too easily) My merino wool layers however, after 33 days wearing them 24/7 over cotton t-shirts and undies that did stink -- still do not stink at all! (Shower change of undies about every 5 days. TMI? sorry) I don't think I even washed my merino before the trip. I know we just get used to our funk... but I keep sneaking up on them. Nope, just smell lanolin. The big Aran Islands sweater I wore above them also still doesn't stink, but it is getting a bit pilly. I was repeatedly told, the north Pacific "just isn't going to be that cold.' so I left my sleeping bag at home. A $25 SOL emergency bivy however made a terrific sleeping bag and was quite durable. I rolled it up and can use it again. I always travel with a sleeping bag liner.

When you insulate your next boat take a look at using cork .. it works well and its very safe. Its also recyclable ..you can also add it as a decking material or flooring. . Its also anti mold and bacterial by nature and fire retardent. Its available in a wide range of thicknesses finishes densities and textures as well as colours. Take a look at a NZ cat called Cool change.. originally a Derick Kelsall design. 😉😎🧙‍♂️🇬🇧
