IN THIS VIDEO
The recent 15k race at the GC30 hit home for me that I haven't been doing enough running at this goal half marathon pace of 1.35.
So, this week I rolled up the sleeves and added some goal pace to a couple of runs, which feature in this video.
It wasn't a great success, as you will see, but I have to start somewhere.

Mate...please don't worry about you not being able to hold your 4:30 pace at the GC30. That course was in no way representative of the conditions you'll face in 5 weeks at the GCM. Those trail segments were brutal, instantly adding on 20bpm to your HR, thereby degrading your staying power way quicker than when you're on a flat, tarmac course. The headwinds and heat were also a factor. Honestly, take off 10-20 seconds per km. You're closer than you think, something you proved in your training run a couple of minutes later in your video!

Thanks David. I love running through that area in behind Main Beach, but on the day of the GC30 it bit me hard. It was a good gauge, but yeah you are right, the GC Marathon weekend will be much better. 👍

For me you can do it Woody !! Your HR at 140 ish is mega low, do you ever hit 160s maybe 170s in a 5k 10k, half or marathon ? Have you always had such a low HR ?

Thanks for your vote of confidence. I can't seem to get my HR above 150 now. A hard 5k has me in the high 140s, but no more. My resting HR has always been low. 👍

Hey Neil. I find it really interesting that you run your long runs so fast. Kipchoge suggests that the long run pace should be 2mins slower than race pace, he does 5min kms on long runs, and he's running sub 3min kms in a race, yet you do basically the same and your targeting 4.30/km race pace, interested to see how this works out for you. Keep up the good work.

Hey Mark, it's a bit of stretch to compare me with Kipchoge! If Kipchoge trains like many other Kenyans, then yes 5min/k pace would be around their starting point, but they do wind it up in their long runs. They would be doing a lot of other things in their training much faster than race pace as well - like intervals etc. I have always struggled to slow my easy runs down, just feels so uncomfortable. I'm getting better, but still needs work. This run I wanted to inject some goal half marathon pace. It's important to let the body know in training what it is in for on race day. It's not something I overdo in a training block, but I throw it in every now and then. 👍

I also need to try and stick to 4:30 at the GC Marathon. Hoping for a 3:10 and a guarantee qualification for Chicago. Will be tough though. Couldn’t get it in the GC30, only averaged 4:44.

Hey mate, forget what happened at the GC30, very hard to get into a rhythm on that terrain. It will be much more forgiving in the GC Marathon. Good luck with the 3.10 goal. Hope the training is going well. 👍
