2:50 The northern most point of Iceland is only about 2 km south of the Arctic circle. And further more; the Arctic circle goes through the island Grímsey. About 30 years ago my parents knew the priest and his wife in Grímsey. The priest always said (and joked about it) that when in bed in their sleeping room, if his wife was angry and would talk to the priest like she was trying to scold a child, he just turned himself in the bed and said: "Sorry my dear, I'm at the other side of the Arctic circle. I can't hear you" :)

Norway looks like such a beautiful country - adding to bucket list. Interesting that the Tesla and Mach-E ended up in a statistical tie - just comes down to luck (lights/road work) and good battery management. I think it has been pointed out Tesla overstates their range and Ford understates it. Edmunds did a similar "real world" range test on the New Jersey turnpike with similar results.

Is there a formula to calculate the optimal speed (and consumption) to minimize the trip time? Driving faster will make you arrive faster unless you have to spend more time charging.
@Alex-qx7jn
@Alex-qx7jn 2 жыл бұрын
The formula would be useless if you would arrive at a charger with 50% instead of 2% and you spend the same amount of time charging to 90% for your next charger. The formula seems to be: for the first leg: the legal limit if it allows you to reach the next high power fast charger with between 1% and 15% battery left. For the following legs of the journey you charge the minimum necessary to drive the speed limit and reach the next fast charger with between 5-15%. Repeat until destination is reached or car catches fire.

I was driving model 3 and was passenger in S few times (my friend and coworker has 2019 Model S). I would never buy any Tesla. Why? Even my Mazda CX5 (MY18, top version) has 3 times better quality materials, better finish quality and better onboard equipment. Come on, I would never buy a car with leather seats (pathetic quality leather) and without ventilation or HUD for more than 35-40k €. Not mentioning Tesla service quality, delays and ques. For me Tesla vehicles are worth less than half of their current price. Who cares about empty (useless) power if you can drive max 90km/h or 130km/h on most roads? Also EV range with speeds exceeding 150km/h is pathetic in every possible vehicle. Also my friends experience: no parts (availability = 0), weeks in Tesla service (so he was left without a car), many glitches (he was more than 10 times in service already due to failiures). Not acceptable even in Dacia... Also Tesla paint quality is extreme joke. :/ Just look on Tesla forum. More problems than any fun. Typical BMW rebate is 15%-22% in my country, but I am not sure if it also counts towards EV's. I think it should due to the sales and CO2 emission average but... who knows. Also BMW is a liftback (I love sedans, but liftbacks even more). I like also Genesis G80 EV but that conversion is worse - loosing lots of space in the trunk and second row height in comparison to the petrol G80. But it looks awesome and solar roof is a nice thing to have (preventing passive discharge, slightly charging, still better survivability than typical paint on the roof [chips]). G80 has also double layered acoustic glass (even for rear seats). Fun fact: you will get a fine if you turn on the windshield wipers on 3 models while driving (in Germany, Poland and maybe even Czech Republic). Why? Because stupid Tesla has that option in damn computer settings. Tesla is cheap. They are saving on everything including basic controls and buttons. Their main "pros" are: EV engineering (power & range) and... fashion (whatever it sounds, since cool kids have Tesla's, at least for now).

@jpdj2715
@jpdj2715 2 жыл бұрын
Nice video, nice concept. It would help to have some more data. The third guy is called Pawel Dalene and he used to run a Tesla DIY channel on YT. The Mach-e has a 99 kWh battery and the Taycan 4S 79 kWh. The Tesla Model 3 was specified as base version and this means it might have a 54 kWh battery. Considering it is best for the battery's lifetime and gives the fastest charges to stay within 20% and 90% of battery charge, the Tesla, at 70% of 54kWh has 38kWh that you want to use. In the video - weather and circumstances - the Model 3 did 168Wh per km (the best it can do on paper is 150Wh/km) and this means there are 321.4km in that 70% battery juice of the Tesla. With these long hauls, it seems to me that the maximum charging Watts the car can take are very important. And it seems that it is important to have recharging stations that can deliver the maximum charge power to the car. Here the question is if the station can still turn out max power to my car if all the other charge outlets are in use, or not. A plot of distance and battery charge level as function of time comparing the cars would have been very illuminating. Bjørn's trip seemed to be dominated by recharging and driving from station to station. I think the base 54kWh Model 3 would be excellent for use in wider urban and sub-urban areas with some, not too far, day trips. I would not use it to get from Amsterdam to Milano with stretches of German Autobahn of 200km/h. I guess that the 168Wh/km more than doubles at such speeds (if it can even do that). Imagine, the Tesla could have two of those 54kWh battery banks and a charge connector on both sides so it could recharge using two outlets in parallel.

I have a question: on a tesla supercharger, can you choose a charging speed or is it always the fastest possible? Or is it always fastest?

Always fastest - to clear the charger for the next person. I read recently that Kistefos museum in Norway installed 22KW chargers because visitors spend 2-3 hours there on average, so this would allow a useful amount of charge without having to come back to the car and move it during the visit. Superchargers on the other hand are designed for journeys.

I really liked the format, hopefully you guys could be doing something similar in the future with another set of cars. Great to see Pawel back as well! I get it that there is a race element here, though if the aim is to be “real world”, i.e see how the cars perform on a regular trip, it might be useful to limit “ninja techniques” - most people won’t want to take their state of charge to 3% on a regular trip just to be there a few minutes quicker for example. And they will turn up to a supercharger with 20% state of charge or higher - it might not be optimal in terms of charging speed, but it may well be more convenient for when you are hungry and/or have to visit the toilets. So the “mistakes” you and Pawel made just make it more realistic for everyday driving.

I have a Tesla Model X in dubai. The consumption varies through the year, but I can definitely achieve the same rates as Bjorn’s testing. Summer = more AC consumption but also lower air density. It's not just about the car.. you also need three people who don't mind getting caught speeding at 100+. With high consumption high speed running, the top end charge curve matters a lot more. Not saying it can't be done faster in a Tesla, just that it's a ballsy record to even attempt.

I don't know for this trip, but I have a house at the Mediterranean in the south of France and I live in Switzerland. With my Mercedes CLK 430 it used to take me about 8 hours to get there. With the small battery (58kWh) AWD Ioniq 5 it takes eight and a half hours and with the 28kWh Ioniq it used to take nine and a half hours. So you could assume that in real live you would loose no more than about an hour in any current EV on a 800km trip, compared to an ICE car. However, depending on where in the World you would take this trip and which EV you would use, this may vary greatly.

One small point: The Tesla was advantaged by the V-3 supercharger and the Porsche was disadvantaged by the small battery and the non-350 KW charging stations. He was also charging with too cold a battery (didn't pre-heat?) and perhaps does not have the 400 V convertor.:-( IMHO it's a waste of money to get the auto charge cover, adds drag and just something to go wrong.
@bjornnyland

150 kW 400 V converter is standard. Car heats up battery to 35°C and then keeps it there for the whole trip. Battery reached that temperature already around Mo i Rana on the return trip.

MrGonzonator that is absolutely incorrect. Tesla’s built in route is extremely precise and accounts for elevation, temperature, past driving speeds.
