Off to Silverstone circuit in the UK this coming weekend for Japfest (UKs biggest Japanese car show) in my little Honda Beat import. Taking it on track and having a look at all the other top grade Japanese cars in the country. And the weekend after... I think, is a retro Weekend event at Goodwood Circuit. Again, more track time for the Beat. Tracks are dying here in the UK, but with a relatively small country like ours, people are willing to travel from track to track.

It's the same with people living next to an airport. Cheap land, but then complain about the planes going over their house. and mostly they are the ones who take a plane to go on holiday. But it's not those people we should be worried about, it's the judges and lawyers that make their complaint go through.

@amaizeing.dumbass5123

In theory, you can't demand both the racetrack owners or the real estate people if they already told you of the risks or inconveniences you can have if you live around there. But, if there's no law to regulate or protect that kind of recreational activities, well... That thing is also not exclusive of motorsports. Here in Mexico city, we already lost one of the most memorable football (soccer) stadiums here, "El Estadio Azul" because of noise complaints around the area.

A better way to do it would be to alter zoning laws. The track would be considered commercial zoning in this scenario, with declared "safe living radius" extending several miles from the edge of the zone. Simply put, the neighborhood shouldn't have been built that close to begin with. I would even argue "but mah cancer" fears of Prop 65 and EPA advisories should be acknowledged by the home owner, and complaint waivers issued for living in proximity to a known source of high powered explosive reactions (engines) causing potentially disorienting sound waves (exhaust) and creating caustic particulates (burnt race fuel) that may cause aggravated coughing (running your AFR too rich), loss of hearing, and erections lasting more than 4 hours.

You ain't kidding my small town has a dragstrip that's been around since the late 60's and not a mile down the road from it in the early 90's they built a lower income subdivision of small single story houses, then people move in knowing it's one of the premier Drag Strips in the south east(Carolina Dragway Birthplace of the Nationals), where they have regular Thursday night grudge racing, sometimes Sundays for motorcycles where people come as far as N. Carolina to race, and regular events like IHRA with teams all the way from Australia on some of the big events all on an 1/8th mile track, and by the early 00's they start complaining, and now they can't run past 1am no matter the event, when they use to run to 3am - 4am on big events, which now hurting their income, and the number of teams that will show up for the bigger events, and even in the mid 00's led to my brother who use to work at the dragstrip getting laid off because they had to cut staff to cut cost in order to stay open. Fuck these types of people who know where they are moving then complain. I say if they don't like it, then they should move if the Dragstrip, or race track was there long before them, and no one else who was already there had problem with it.

We've got a great dirt track near us in Ontario that's on an Indian reserve and it's pretty packed most race nights, my cousins race sprints there. The paved speedway that my family raced at nearby did really well for decades, back in the day guys like Bobby Allison and even Earnhardt would come up and race there in their spare time but it went downhill over the last 15 years. Now the guy who owns the dirt tack bought it and rebuilt it with huge grandstands and lights but I'm not sure there's too many people racing it or watching it anymore.

@game over man 69 Guns aren’t “just things.” Firearms serve the sole purpose of upholding all other rights. Stripping the ability for a society to own guns opens the doors for tyranny. If the second amendment is infringed upon, then all other rights are on the chopping table as well. And let’s not get into the many more horrible problems that are created from banning guns like increased crime (do some research). Without guns a society will be left defenseless against a tyrannical government like what is currently happening in Venezuela. This has happened in history multiple times all over the globe. It won’t be the opposite. Look up the definition of the word “ban.” It is a direct attack on the second amendment. This is how it starts. You give an inch and they’ll take a mile. The second amendment is being chipped at persistently. Once the second amendment is out of the way, all other rights will be attacked as well. The second amendment states that it “shall not be infringed” for a reason. I strongly recommend looking at what the bill mentioned above wants to ban (which is worded to ban everything) and then look at it from a different perspective.

@rozbiAs I said before, it being realistic doesn't mean its the same, its a whole different experience to drive in or even attend a race in real life than hopping in a simulator, plus there is almost no real world innovation in sim racing, they either have to base their cars off of ones that exist in real life, or make ones up. And when they make stuff up they can do whatever they want even if its not possible in the real world yet, and that ruins part of the reason racing exists, to push the limits of what is possible. With a sim you can make whatever you want possible, but your not really pushing the limits

Yep, and charge if you wreck. The reason racing is dying is all of the gatekeeping and ever-rising prices to participate. Back in the day it was some pavement in someone's cow pasture where they said "go play", now you need a fully prepped race car for 10's of thousands of dollars and pay hundreds of dollars to be allowed to do anything more than parade laps. I get that safety is important, but you're just pushing people onto the street to run Mustangs through Cars and Coffee crowds when you make it too expensive to go to a track.

A lot of great information and points in this video. First video of yours I've watched and like it very much. It's not just Laguna Seca that has dumb neighbours issues. There is a local to me drag track that has been operating since the early '60's and over the last few years a few new houses have been built near it and these people have the audacity to complain about the noise, knowing full well that there is a function race track near by. Another facility also local to me has a similar issue, though the town was there first, the track has been operating since 1956 IIRC, but the track was able to install dirt mounds around the outside of the facilities towards on the side towards the town to help absorb and defect the sound. Of course there are still complaints, but the noise is always within allowable limits, and racing stops at 10 because of this, it used to be 11... :/

WHat? That is complettly wrong! It is the exact opposite way! Racing, or driving in general was a gentlemens sport. Only for the rich. Nowadays we have non rich people in motorsports and everybody can buy a car and take it to the racetrack.

Mitch Internet if that isn’t the truth I don’t know what is. A lot of the smaller budget guys can’t compete with the big money guys. Some guys will spend more on a motor than other drivers spend on their whole operation.

Yep that's a big part of it, just look at NASCAR as a prime example, or big time NHRA/IHRA Drag racing. My late stepfather in the late 60's - mid 70's use to drag race NHRA super stock with a gold painted 1968 Dodge Challenger all on a working man's pay, but then boom family hit, and he decided he did not want to travel with the sport, and by the mid 80's when my 2 step brothers where old enough he could have traveled if he wanted, it was a sport you needed a crazy amount of personal cash, along with sponsors to even think about getting started, and it's only gotten worse as the years go on sadly, so yeah that's what going to kill most sanctioned racing events.

Having the track open to the public, clubs, shops, etc. for track time on non-event days can bring in the capital to put on the events. Sponsors, advertising space, concessions, driver school, etc. helps, too.

RIP Texas World Speedway. Used to be a top notch F1 track. 2 mile oval with an an infield AND outfield circuit. Now it's a salvage yard for flood cars, soon to be cleared to make way for apartments. Used to enjoy hearing the local Porsche club ripping it up in the distance from my patio on Sunday mornings.

Thank you so much for this episode you are exactly right I've grown up at highland Rin speedway in millersville TN since I was a kid the track has closed twice and had 6 different owners car counts are declining and fan counts are coming down just as fast this episode is a great discription of the real crisis all of our local tracks are facing I grew up next to that track I've raced there I was the tech inspector there and now have returned on the safety crew while I finish my car and the last thing anyone who loves racing wants to see are tracks like ours closing down

One issue I've found here in my region, ( and I'm sure all over) that Nolan touched on, is that the next generation just isn't there on the track. In their minds, why spend the thousands it takes to field a car when you can spend hundreds on a good IRacing setup and still have a blast.

The city shouldjust say "only people living here before the track was build have a voice, anyone else, move if you don't like it." Also, Notice has to be given to any new tendans , builders, etc... We had a similar case of a couple that bought a house next to the local school playground and went complaining to the city about the noise. (both of them worked at home to make it even worse for themselves...) Short awnser was. "The school was here first, move or live with it in silence." they went to the media and got laughed at. they went to trail and lost. now they moved, problem solved.

Racing is my passion. When I finally acquire my dream car and build my dream track car I will definitely go often to a local track. Sadly tho the GTA where I live does not allow tracks cuz it’s a big city and the noise bothers people so the closest non oval track to me is 2 hours away. Still willing to go that distance on the weekends tho!

I believe another major implication is general overhead. I can't imagine what insurance (not even racing insurance) but general property insurance (and taxes) for a large racetrack is!
