Rachel, as a finance guy, I'm going to give you some advice about your loans. Actually, they are a bit less than I expected which is awesome. I know you won't make a lot of money in residency, but you will after that. My advice would be to continue to live off of the amount you were in residency for 5 years and use that time to get those loans paid off. You'll be what, like 35/36 then, and have no debt and a great salary. Then it will be easy to build wealth, and don't underestimate the improved mental state you will have when those loans are paid off.

Rachel, I “delayed” a lot of my life by serving in the Navy. One day you’ll look back and realize you didn’t delay a thing, and you lived a good life that helped you get to where you want to be. I’m a proud father of two boys. As a former medic in the military, and now firefighter, and knowing the very basics of medicine, I was blown away by both of my wife’s OBGYN’s. You are going into such a great profession! I’ve never been more humbled than watching a team of women, OBGYN and nurses, save my boys each time with shoulder dystocia’s. Wow. Thank you for what you do.

Thank you for being so honest about your loans. Its honestly stomach dropping. If so many doctors weren't in debt, perhaps more of them would specialize in primary care and support a single payer healthcare system.

I‘m still so astounded that it is so „normal“ for students in other countries to be in debt that amount. I‘m so grateful in Germany we’re in debt (usually) not more than 10.000€ if our parents couldn’t afford to pay us. Studying in itself is free… I wish for the future that more and more countries educate for free! Especially in jobs that are serving the public. Really can’t take that for granted.

Such great advice ur giving. I dealt with burnout a few times in my 36+ years. Because I love to learn new things I would seek out and work in a different nursing environment. For me it was great. The people I met and worked with impacted my life with each change and the learning never stopped. Sometimes people have trouble recognizing when they need to make some changes and they remain stuck. Life is too short to be unhappy. Evaluate what is causing it and don’t be afraid of change. It can be great.

I liked that you shared how your parents understand when you don't have time to share with them n the only way you could share the time you have at hand is by calling them. I think most people in med school need that support. I wish mine would understand me like yours do

I’m a medical student in India and I watch your vlogs as I relate to a lot of your experiences. In India, the non government backed medical colleges are extremely expensive and since my family is just a simple middle class one, they barely pay off my tuition fees as well. And that’s really been hard on my conscience to the point where I regret not doing well enough in my entrance exams to get into a government funded medical school (which is practically free of tuition fees). But when I saw how upfront you were about your debts I realised that I wasn’t alone. You’re absolutely right. Our passion and our dreams are more important than money and no amount of money could replace the amazing careers we’re gonna have. So thank you for letting me know that I’m not a financial burden on my parents.

Until recently, I regretfully subscribed to the stupid pre-med taboo that medicine vloggers are ‘cringy’. But I’ve been guilty-pleasure watching your content for a while now and you really make some great points in this video - In fact, even kinda makes me want to vlog my M1 year. I consider myself a creative person and I think video editing is a great outlet for self-expression.

love you Rachel!! I'm currently rewatchig all your videos from the beginning and maybe a week ago i watched the one where you took a "speciality" quiz and i smiled to myself because the quiz put OBGYN near the bottom in your results 😂 BUT little did they know hehe ;) you're so inspiring and i loved hearing you talk about body image. I recently read a paper for a class in which it said that "women themselves will not be able to take back control over their bodies only by resisting the enormous power of fashion, cosmetic and diet industries. Everday social relations and conventions and relationships with health care professionals must also change". As a future doctor yourself, having you open this conversation is beyond important ❤ You embody the whole spectrum of what a doctor should be and any residency program should feel BEYOND lucky+proud+excited to have a public figure like yourself who also has such a positive impact on future medical professionals (and humans) part of their program! I'm glad you chose to include your youtube life in your application...❤ all the best girl!! xo

If we start from a place of caring and see results it proves that care is valuable. if we know the value of our efforts the effort becomes rewarding. The more value we find in the middle the more flexible we are and the more we can achieve. I think part of the cinderella energy is an abundance of finding joy in the process and I think it’s one of the things this channel teaches. Where there’s an imbalance, we can teach each other new ways to love where we are or help each other toward the love and joys that make things easier and let us know we’re seen. Everything in life is a process. The more we can help each other in that the better it all becomes for all of us. We owe that to each other and ourselves.

With my second baby, the O.B I had was delivering her first baby. My daughter was 8.4 lbs. My other 2 kids were over 9 pounds lol. I birthed toddlers I swear. 🤣 You are going to make an amazing O.B and I'd be absolutely comfortable and happy to have you deliver my child. You have such a warm presence. I've been watching since your first week in medical school video. Been amazing to watch you kick this journeys butt. Life will fall into place, a partner, kids, marriage whatever it may be will come to you. Just a couple of comments about your video. As for body weight and standards, in college I was very active and eating healthy. I am 5'7" and was 165 pounds-- overweight by the tables, however my doctor ordered me not to lose any more weight. That was the lowest I could go and still be healthy. So I applaud your attitude towards healthy eating and not being stressed by numbers! As for what a future partner might do...I know there are doctor/doctor matches. However, my niece is a family practice D.O. Her husband does primary child care--he works flexible hours--so that she is available to take her call days.

When you mentioned PAs watching.. yep that’s me. I’m the PA :p As far as loans.. I’m very thankful my grandparents were able to pay for my tuition. My PA school tuition for 27 months was about 90k. I have 53k in loans (about 50k principal) from living expenses. So I would say PAs without kids or anything.. probably 150k in loans after graduation. Compared to average salary for PAs is maybe around 120k now.

i would not say that the government getting involved in stuent loans made the price of medical school much higher. In most civilized countries, the government is extremely involved with college tuition and they do not have that problem. In civilized countries, the citizen do not go bankrupt for having a medical emergency. Are taxes really higher in those countries? in the USA i pay 28% federal 9 % state 7% fica maxing out my 401k 20% , max out Roth IRA plus healthcare ( $6000 out of pocket ). That is very comparable(even more) to the highest-taxed countries with a lot fewer benefits. my edit: i am really glad the government paid for your bachelor. You made good use of it. The world will have a great OB because of it. We all win.

Rachel omg today a fellow premed at my school asked me this afternoon what kind of doctor I wanted to be. So I told her I wanted to be a surgeon. And she goes well do you want to be a mom? I said yes I do. She told me I better rethink that because I can't be both. She goes I use to want to be a surgeon too but not anymore bc of that. I said not very confidentially bc I was so taken a back and a little hurt from the unsupport I'm going to be both. She goes well you will be rich so you can afford a nanny to raise your kids basically. I just can't get that out of my head that really got to me. I know I shouldn't let people get in my head but that really hurt. I just wanted to share with another fellow female future doctor because dang I was so surprised she would say something like that. No I have doubts I haven't had before. Do you have any advice for how deal with naysayers? That's my first time sharing that with someone else in person and to experience them saying that hurts. I know it won't be the last time I hear that though.
@thomasmonroe4667
@thomasmonroe4667 Жыл бұрын
Hello, I wasn’t there so I have no idea how that discussion went with that doctor. But I don’t think she was primarily telling you that just to discourage you. As a pre-med I work with several surgeons, and done many shadowing experiences with them. I can tell you that a majority of surgeons have such crazy long schedules that they just don’t have kids. The ones I met that do, either have a nanny OR told me they missed many important parts of their kids lives growing up. I’m not telling you this to discourage you either, but if you want to have kids & be a surgeon, you have to be aware of what kind of surgeon you want to be, how much time it will take out of a typical day, and whether or not that will effect your parenting style if you choose to become a parent.

I'm sure you definitely can be a surgeon and still have a family. Surgery hours are very grueling but still possible, it just depends on what kind of surgeon you want to be and the scheduling for it. Neurosurgeons have it hard but I'm sure other types of surgeons are able to make it manageable so I say go for it if that's your passion. I've seen people be surgery attendings/residents and still have time to go out and have fun with friends and family.

Hi there! I’m not in medical school.. I decided to go the PA route because I have three kids. That being said I think the comment is only valid depending on your current situation and which surgical specialty. For example. For 7 years I was a single mom so going to medical school to become a surgeon(what I originally wanted to do) wasn’t an option. Once I got married, had another kid, I was older I really had to calculate not only the money but the time and dedication it would take for me to pursue a medical degree. In the end it just didn’t work logically and I realized I can be a PA and still find my way without losing my dream of going into medicine❤️ so don’t let it discourage you. I will say being a mom comes first for me. No job would ever take precedent. So if being a mom is one of your purposes maybe just take a long look at specialties and see which surgical specialty is more forgiving in terms of time. This is so long but I hope this helps you ☺️

Uh this is hateful, you are seen as a machine and not a person who have wants and needs. Hopefully someday this will change for hospital workers in the meantime; I hope you go and succeed so when a woman goes the same path as you, you can help her out.

Depends on what type of surgeon...cosmetic 9-5, ortho doing knee scopes 9-5.... You could also go dentistry route for oral maxillofacial surgery.

19:50 not me over here thinking for the past FOUR YEARS that Rachel is like 5'9" or 5'10" and she's actually 5'4" (or 5'5" on a good day lol) ... I don't think I'll ever fully believe that unless I meet her in person which likely won't happen but sending much love from Michigan!

Hey...I just wanted to tell you guys that Jesus loves you so much. He let Himself die on the cross as punishment for OUR sins, so that we wouldn't have to do it ourselves. Then God rose Him up from the dead to symbolize that fact that we have received forgiveness for our sins and now have new life. You can tap into God's kindness and love, even right now, by believing in Jesus and what He's done for us all, and by turning your heart from sin, to the love of Christ :)
