Sergei Rachmaninoff's famous and thrilling piano Prelude (Opus 3, No 2), transcribed for organ by the organist of Notre-Dame, Louis Vierne, in 1932. 1 April 2023 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rachmaninoff: conductor, virtuoso pianist and composer extraordinaire.

Absolutely stunning! This magnificent console of the Salisbury Cathedral organ is an extension of John's Spirit. This could have easily been the original version of this piece for which someone later made a piano transcription - this is how beautifully John has rendered Rachmaninoff's soul. Bravo! Bravo!

@@JohnChallenger This makes my think of the Iain Banks scifi The Hydrogen Sonata (an immortal alien's life goal to play before choosing to sublimate with the universal consciousness) although I imagine this is nicer to listen to. Sir, I have such a romantic notion of playing such a song in such a cathedral - a pinnacle of human expression, punctuating a neverending sea of heart-aches, conflicts, mundanities, and necessities. And how strange to find such a grand masterpiece nestled mostly hidden in the sands of time. Check out the book if you haven't. It might inspire you. ;)
