most of the time they will let you go, I had a BF who used to have off-road trucks and sometimes his license plate would get dirty and he would get pulled over and the officer would basically just tell him to get it cleaned up, I think the 200 dollar fine is for intentionally making your plate dirty, for example you can buy these magnetic leaves that you can put on your license plate, but yeah I do agree 200 dollars is steep, but I think its meant to be if you intentionally do that, IMO it should be basically a fix it ticket

Cop breaks traffic law in Texas and then escalates a misdemeanor fine into to assault and battery of a man with a lethal weapon (Gun and Taser). a dirty license plate... and I'm talking one COMPLETELY covered in mud so that it can't even be seen, should be a 'wipe it off' issue. Right there on the side of the road, either the officer, or the driver should simply fix the problem, verify all legality with the plate, then tell the person to have a nice day. Doesn't even need ANY sort of ticket to begin with.... The fuck does a 'fix it ticket' mean to dirt????

The plate belongs to the state, it should be their responsibility to keep it readable. Their officers should be “serving and protecting”. The owner of the car keeps it clean. State should be responsible for the plates.

I have done that before, stopped a car, I got out kicked the license and 95% of the mud came off. And just told the drive, why I stopped him, and told him to clean it off. And told him I was gonna report him to BMW for driving their car like that. We had a good laugh, and went on our way. Not hard at all

As a Black woman, years ago I had a dirty plate and it was winter here in Nebraska. The little bit of snow on the ground was rock solid hard. It was like 10 degrees outside and the Sherriff looked like he despised my existence. He told me to clean the plate, I had nothing to clean the plate with, I had just came from church with nice clothes on, so I had to kick the snow until I got wet pieces to wipe with my hand... this is the world we live in, it's sick and f'kn SAD!

Given that weather and if folks did have the luxury of parking in a garage I am sure there were quite a bit of dirty plates around. So when the weather gets like do they just go around harassing citizens hoping they would find something on their name? That had to be really frightening not knowing that if this cop would have tried to escalate matters.

Ever had every single one of your posessions stolen by thieves? They cover their plates when they drive off with all your stuff, making it impossible to find them. These fines help to make it just a little bit harder for those thieves, because they cnanot freely drive around with obscured plates without risking being pulled over, and possibly arrested for warrants or identified by their vehicle description.
