I rarely get a request to customize racquets from someone living overseas. Recently, a viewer and new client, Yul, reached out to me and explained his problem.
"I have 4 Wilson Blade 98 V8 which I have been using alternately. The problem is that these sticks have different specs of their own. That's why after I saw your video I am planning to buy 3 new racquets of the same and have them shipped to your store so maybe you could help me out. My plan is to have it shipped to you and for you to do your magic on the said sticks."
Thanks to Yul's request, this would make the perfect opportunity to create a video on my methodology when matching and customizing frames.
Here are some details I inadvertently omitted that I was supposed to say. At 4:45, I mentioned that it was essential to clean the pallet and the butt cap by removing the double stick tape.
* I usually use Goo Gone to remove any sticky residue left by the double stick tape, then use the isopropyl alcohol to clean off the Goo Gone film.
* By removing the double-stick tape, you avoid having multiple layers of old tape, which can eventually increase the grip size.
* Sometimes, old double-stick tape can get brittle, loose, or gummy and sticky. In both cases, if left on the pallet, it causes the newly installed grip to slide and is more likely to move out of place.

Aloha Ralph, Sounds like you're extending the grip for a 2-handed back player, is that correct? Like Borg's old Bancroft and Donnay racquets! 😃 I don't know if you're serious about buying a Royal Kona Resort Tennis Club shirt, but if you are, I'll be happy to mail one to you. The cost would be $35, including USPS shipping in the US. The fabric is 100% polyester Dri-Fit-type material and is 50 SPF. It comes in three colors - white, sapphire blue, and mint green. I designed the shirt and it's inspired by "ALOHA" and a "Fruit Band." Please email me at amstringing@gmail.com if you'd like me to send you one!

Hi Albert, thanks for the detail video. Have you have any experience with the lead not coming out to 4” per 1g? I had some lead tapes where it’s slightly lower or higher which makes customizing a pain sometimes.
@amstringing1
@amstringing1 Жыл бұрын
Aloha Andy, No, I haven't experienced anything significant. I always buy lead tape on a roll, so I don't know if it would be different in a precut package. I suppose if I did notice a difference, I would make the adjustment in length for that particular roll of lead tape.

Great Video! Question: If you wrap a grip for a left handed person, do you trim the starting end of the grip to match the taper for the reversed starting position?
@amstringing1
@amstringing1 Жыл бұрын
Aloha Stephen, Thanks for watching! To answer your question, I would leave the grip "as is" and wrap it in the opposite direction. It's always awkward wrapping a grip that way, but left-handers really appreciate it, and makes them feel special! 😀 Here's a video I did on wrapping a grip left-handed. Great video! I am curious why the swingweight decreased after changing to leather grip, cuz overall it increase the rackets static weight and it should be slightly increased or no change at all.
@amstringing1
@amstringing1 Жыл бұрын
Aloha Grigor, Good observation! To be totally honest, I didn't expect the swingweight to decrease either, since this usually doesn't happen. I double-checked everything to make sure the measurements were correct, but everything checked out. On a couple previous occasions, when I added tungsten putty inside the handle, I noticed there was a decrease in swingweight. I was curious why this was happening and I reached out to the guys at Tennis Warehouse to see if they had an answer why this would happen. They confirmed that adding weight to the handle should not decrease the swingweight. When I customize my own racquets, I usually add about 15-18 grams to the handle using silicone, and the swingweight always remains the same. See video at 15:54 - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oMqfg9N1tZjenZ8.html. I know adding weight to the handle will affect the balance, making it more head light. However, this shouldn't affect the swingweight. This is why it's still a mystery to me. In this video, there's a chance that my initial swingweight readings could have been off, meaning that it was lower than what I posted, and that would make sense. However, if I ever find out the reason why the swingweight decreased, I will let you know! 🤙
@enematwatson1357
@enematwatson1357 9 ай бұрын
This is thus a measurement error. It must be because SW just cannot decrease when weight is added, no matter how much, no matter where. My best guess is the firmer leather grip allows the frame to be held a little bit more securely in the cradle and that impacts the measurement a little bit? Just my intuition, though. I don't know for a fact that a tiny bit of wobbling in the cradle impacts the measurement. 🤔

@amstringing1
@amstringing1 8 ай бұрын
Aloha Akbar, If I can't get it spot on, then I'll allow the following variance. Weight +/- 2 grams Swingweight +/- 2 units I don't usually worry about the balance since it will follow the swingweight. But if I were to check it, I would go with +/- 2 points

Hey Albert, do you ever match twistweight as well when do these customizations? Also 2 more questions, is there a way to start the grip without a staple gun? I usually use double sided tape but I find after a few sessions it starts slipping. And lastly I've seen other stringing start their grip on the 6th bevel or 5th bevel, is there any rhyme or reason to which one works best? Thanks in advance, btw after making a few updates to my stringing methods per your lockout machine as a constant machine pull and finding good results!
@amstringing1
@amstringing1 Жыл бұрын
Aloha Akbar, To be honest, I don't customize frames to twistweight specifications. Question #1 - I can think of a couple of things that might be causing your grip to slip. a) If you don't strip off all the double-stick tape from the butt cap and pallet, this can make it slip. Especially if it's old and gummy. b) Maybe you're not stretching it tight enough. Question #2 - I don't think it really matters which bevel you start your grip from, but I prefer bevel 3 (widest flat side). I think it's easier to hold the end of the grip securely as you wrap your first rotation around the butt cap. You can see it here in this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNmdp8mgz626ooU.html I'm happy to hear that you're streamlining your technique! 😃👍

Hi, I am lefty, What would be the reason for wrapping the grip left or right?, I heard there is a difference but nobody has been able to tell me the reasoning behind it in terms of playability..
@amstringing1
@amstringing1 Жыл бұрын
Aloha Martin, It's all about the "feel" of the grip. When you hold a traditionally wrapped grip with your left hand, you'll notice that the angle of the wraps is not at the same angle as your fingers. However, when you hold it with your right hand the angle of the wraps matches the angle of your fingers. Some left-handers are used to the "feel" of a right-handed wrapped grip, but most left-handers tend to like the "feel" of a left-handed wrapped grip!

Aloha Richard, It's not the most ideal situation, but at least the racquets were strung at the same time and Yul will be able to test them side by side. In general, a plane's cargo hold is pressurized and reaches about 45-60 degrees.
@chuckfriebe843
@chuckfriebe843 7 ай бұрын
Why would you measure balance and swing weight before applying the leather overgrip? While I know that it doesn't greatly affect the SW, it will definitely affect the balance. Also, it would have been smarter to put the lead under the grommet for a cleaner professional look. You would stock the pieces of lead and pierce them with an awl once they are attached. Then, you would push the grommet through the lead tape to cover it up. Stringing gut that low is a recipe for a rocket laucher of a tennis racquet. On these racquets, if the player has a fast swing, the tension of the gut should be higher than 50lbs and the poly should be strung at roughly two pounds lower, especially on a frame that is as flexible as the Wilson Blade. Higher flex should have lower tensions and lower flex should have higher tensions. This prevents loss of control. This is why professionals in the 80s and 90s strung at higher tensions because the racquets made during that time had lower flex RA ratings.
@amstringing1
@amstringing1 6 ай бұрын
Aloha Chuck, In the video, I want to make sure that I knew what I was starting with before this process. This would give me a picture of how closely the frame specifications were in stock form. As for your suggestion to install the lead tape under the grommet, I would consider that application if the placement was in the 12:00 location. The reasons are explained in this video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNKlorem2ZbHYJ8.html As for the low string tension of these racquets, it was to help prevent arm problems as expressed by my client. String tension is a matter of personal preference. I've strung a Babolat Pure Drive with a full bed of natural gut as low as 21 pounds! 😆
