This is a good proper introduction to Radiohead. This is easily Radiohead's warmest album, and probably the most radio friendly since they started getting experimental. Love this album. My favorite is definitely Kid A, but it's purely subjective. I would suggest going back to OK Computer and then going chronological to get a gist of the evolution we experienced as long time fans.

@@FernStone I think the 1st album Pablo Honey is pretty skippable. It's a pretty mediocre album and bad by Radiohead standards. It's maybe something worth visiting just out of sheer curiosity if you end up really taking a liking to their other work. The Bends is a great album, but it's pretty straightforward 90s Brit Rock, it's just really really polished song writing, with Thom's voice and Jonny's guitar work sticking out. If you're more into experimental, it might be a little too straightforward. A lot of the older head musicians that grew on Led Zep, Hendrix, The Beatles, etc., seem to love The Bends and OK Computer and then get lost at Kid A and beyond. If I were you, I'd go chronological from OK Computer, and if you happen to make it all the way to the end, to A Moon Shaped Pool. Go back and at least give The Bends a try. Or start from The Bends in order. Pablo Honey really isn't worth wasting time on. They have 8 other fantastic albums. And then there's Thom and Jonny's solo work and side projects and their newest band The Smile which is incredible in its own right. The Radiohead B Sides alone could make another set of great albums. All the more reason to avoid Pablo. Since you clearly have a music background, you might enjoy (and I think fans would too) reacting to their Live From The Basement sessions. They did 1 for In Rainbows and 1 for The King Of Limbs. A lot of people didn't "get" The King Of Limbs til they watched the songs played live. That would be a dope thing to react to. Either way, its nice to see someone who is involved and has a mature take on music dissect great albums. You deserve a lot more subs. Best of luck.

I will start from Ok Computer, but I'm certainly curious about the ones before. would love to see what I think in comparison after I've heard everything up from Ok Computer. So yes , I definitely don't know a lot abut Radiohead ,as I have stated in the video ! The songs I have heard / remember weren't as experimental !!! It's funny how my dads fav album is Ok Computer , yet I don't know any song names or anything. I guess he would play it in his own time or when I was a lot younger. But I hadn't any idea that they have been quite experimental since OK Computer. So sorry if that came across super dumb, I just need to get to know them more. I really would love to listen to more Radiohead and journey through their albums. Mainly because it gave me such a nice feeling when listening , it felt like home. Thanks everyone !

Ok Computer was probably the last album with radio-friendly songs. It's experimental in itself but nothing compared to what came after. Personally I'm a post-OK-Computer fan but it's all good. Kid A & Amnesiac are two of the most psychedelic albums I know. In Rainbows probably my favorite all rounder.

Seeing you trying to figure out Videotape's time signature is interesting bc there's actually a video on YT about Thom struggling to get the right tempo for the song when writing it. That's the great thing about Radiohead, they put so much time into everything they write and it never goes unnoticed by anyone willing to engage with the music. Great reaction!
@nodezsh
@nodezsh 2 жыл бұрын
It's not exactly the tempo. The song originally had lots of impulse and drums as played live before getting a studio version. The thing is that the melody on each bar starts an eight note/quaver after the first beat, and the band couldn't get the production right, the instrumentation didn't quite make sense. Eventually someone came up with this stripped down version and they recorded that instead, effectively nullifying the syncopation because the drum sounds like it's in the previous bar and the melody in the first beat instead.
@Johro66
@Johro66 Жыл бұрын
It's the sound of the videotape playing.. It starts out in step and falls out, this syncopation you hear is the noise, the click clacking of the tape in the machine, it's especially noticeable towards the end of the song. It's beautifully done.

I literally cried watching you experience "Videotape." That song is a dirge, an absolute funeral march, with lyrics drenched in the imagery of oldschool VHS tape-recorded "last words" messages people used to leave their families when they knew they were terminally ill. THIS SONG helped my dad and I emotionally survive in some very difficult times; a point made all the more meaningful to me when you mentioned that your connection to Radiohead came from YOUR dad. Thanks for this video, it really was incredible watching you revel in the textures and lush production that makes this album one of the most moving and impactful I've ever heard. You do amazing work in all of these videos, and bring such a personal and very emotionally open experience to your first listens.

The oddly timed beats are actually the noises of the videotape playing, out of time with the music, it's, especially notable more near the end of the song. It's the tape catching now and then. This whole album is beautiful and poignant and emotional, and I'd expect nothing less from Radiohead, they are just out of this world

Track 3 “Nude” is my favourite Radiohead song. And this is my favourite of their discography, by quite a wide margin actually. Their music is always hypnotic and masterfully done, but I find that with some of their albums, they go on a little too long. But In Rainbows is absolute perfection in length, songwriting, production and experimentation. “Nude” is one of the most beautiful sounds I’ve ever heard and the whole album deserves your full attention from start to finish. These reactions assure me that great music will always be rediscovered and meaningful for generations to come.

You made a comment at the beginning of this video about how you expected this one to be more experimental since it was recommended to you, but Radiohead has always been quite ahead of its time. Please do Kid A and Amnesiac next! Very different from In Rainbows I also recommend In Rainbows' deluxe version (In Rainbows Disc 2) I love Reckoner the most because of nostalgia. This album is my all-time favourite because it came out on my birthday. Videotape is in 4/4 but the instruments are syncopated, so much that Thom had a hard time playing that song live because it was hard to play along to the rest of the band. And the song is actually an old song and was originally fast paced with a more bright and optimistic sound. In Rainbows was a very influential album by them which was released independently and invented the idea of a "pay-what-you-want" album or technically FREE album. The album is mainly and philosophically about love and life, inspired by the story of Faustus who was looking for happiness and that theme echoes throughout the album and looking for true love and all. BTW FUN FACT: idk if you noticed but Poppy sampled the song All I Need for her song Nothing I Need (which is on I Disagree) and is an antithesis to the themes of this album.

Ok Computer and In Rainbows are my favorite Radiohead albums, despite them being so different. What I love about Ok Computer is that despite it being more traditional, the production is so perfect that it sounds completely timeless. The best way I can describe it is that Radiohead is trying to push 'normal' rock music to its limit, especially on tracks like Paranoid Android, Exit Music, and Climbing Up the Walls.

this is my favourite album of all time a friend introduced it to me during a hard time for me and wow it really helped it was so beautiful and perfect there are many relatable moments in it for me and I love how people have so many unique interpretations to the songs. the sound palette is just so amazing as well it is the most pleasing sound to my ears and brain and really my heart. My favourite song is Reckoner (also my favourite song of all time closely followed by Let Down and How to Disappear Completely both which are also by radiohead) because like you said it kind of embodies the whole album and it's just such a beautiful song and I think it's extremely interesting. Some other standouts and some of my favourite songs off this album are bodysnatchers, all I need, jigsaw falling into place and weird fishes/arpeggi your interpretation of videotape is actually very similar to mine which I found interesting also I really like the visual you created from house of cards. I love reaction channels. I have listened to many full album reactions. I must say your reaction here is one of the most interesting ones I have ever heard. Music is very emotional and very visual. Listening to you describe abandoned buildings with shaky foundations and Tom playing guitar inside, and then saying that that is where the previous song took you. I don't normally do this but I'm giving you a sub after only one reaction. I guess technically it's multiple reactions cause it was multiple songs. Kid A was a very divisive album to Radiohead fans. So much so it almost broke up the band. Very experimental. If you enjoy experimental music I would suggest looking at OK Computer and then Kid A. Great reaction, well done.

Idk how to explain this over text, but like, when he says "Soft as your pillow", the syllables "Soft", "as", and "pill" are all falling on the 1 of the 5/4 measures. Not tryna be pretentious or be mean or anything, just pointing it out so you feel the groove intended. Really dig your reactions

This is easily their best overall work to date, and can you believe they gave this album away for free?! I downloaded it free when i was in a web design back in high school and burned it to a disc by the end of class lol.

The wonky feeling to the timing of Videotape is due to the piano actually being subliminally syncopated a 1/16 note behind the beat. It's like the actual beat is implied and never shown. If you add the beat in your head right before each piano note, you'll feel the song much better. Like this: *beat**piano*--*beat**piano*

The version of Weird fishes of the singer Lianne la havas is incredible, in her version the song got more soulful, you should react to that version, you gonna love it.

For all that Fern Stone talks about them branching out and trying different things, I'm not quite sure if she knows about the artistic efforts of Radiohead just after Ok Computer.

Oh well, if you choose to react to Kid A or Amnesiac, the albums following Ok Computer, I think you might be surprised. Or should I say, you would have been surprised just as much or even more than you were with this, if you hadn't listened to this album.

@@FernStone You should give the albums between OK and In Rainbows a listen, since you appreciate experimentation. Kid A from 2000 was when they completely overhauled their sound. My favourite song, How to Dissappear Completely, is on it.

Jigsaw falling into Place is one of my favorite tunes already had ever and that’s saying something considering there’s probably about 50 if not all of them. When this album came out I was beside myself with admiration and nobody listened to it. You cannot force feed people good nourishment they have to find it themselves. Do you think that you go through your life and not listen to this album or anything they do in the western world is a travesty
