My guess is that they heard the Lana Del Rey song, which sounds waaayy more similar to Creep than Creep does to the first one, got all bitter and thought "fuck it, if we can get sued for that shit then this we can definitely sue her for this" If that were the case, I can kinda understand the bitter feeling but their gripe should be with The Hollies or the courts, not Lana Del Rey. It's petty as fuck, and tbh as a Brit we normally mock Americans for suing for fucking anything so it's disappointing to see a British band stooping that low.

This video has more views than Taylor Swift can't Fix Our Political System! although Taylor is more popular than Lana or Radiohead right now and Taylor video was released months ago and this one day ago. I think both are important issues but Taylor video is actually about how people should make their own decisions in politics and other things instead of waiting for advice from your favorite artist. Though it is very stupid that artists sue other ones based on one beat or short melody. Sometimes they didn't even make it. Like in this case Radiohead ripped off The Hollies.

The Lana Del Ray track, the Radiohead track, and even The Air That I Breathe have the same I-III-IV-iv Progression in the prechorus. This is the only similarity in chords between the Del Ray track and Creep though, as Lana's track goes askew from that progression after each prechorus (meaning this progression was only used 4 times in the song). But on the other hand, Creep maintains the same chord progression that was used in The Air That I Breathe throughout the whole song (it is literally just I-III-IV-iv over and over), and even has the exact same key as the track (G) - (at least Lana had the decency to change her song's key to A instead of G, so the I-III-IV-iv progression wasn't the exact same chords [ in Creep and The Air That I Breathe] [ in Lana's song]).

Zarkosis Smash And yet Creep is the better song. Seems to me all Lana had to do was not use that progression.
@ZarkosisSmash
@ZarkosisSmash 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think this has anything to do with which song is better; musically speaking Lana's song is a lot more complex. Anyhow, what I also implied was that Radiohead completely stole that progression from another song, so there is no justification for suing someone else over that same song (especially since they already lost the law-suit to the Hollies).
@stillaliveplus1forme
@stillaliveplus1forme 6 жыл бұрын
Zarkosis Smash If you listen to all 3 songs in order of release all you hear is that Radiohead lifted a bit of a progression and turned a bloated shitty song into a massive hit. And then Lana straight up copied their hit for over half of her song with the only original part being the chorus. Radiohead improved upon the hollies "idea" 10 fold and made an instant classic. Lana didn't improve on anything she just stole from creep and then added her chorus. So where as Creep using the progression is only a good thing as the hollies were essentially wasting it Lana had no reason to use it and should have immediately realized she was ripping creep and just changed her verse and kept her chorus. But instead she fully decided to rip off creep. And now she crying her wittle heart out because 1 or 2 lawyers sent her a memo and she decided to jump the gun and play the victim for public favour... where as radiohead just admitted that they were inspired by the hollies and moved on, she's got her he'd do far up her ass that she can't admit shit. She's all like "that song was my modern day manifesto, OT meant so much to me my heart and soul is in that and Radiohead AR trying to steal it from me, none of it was a rip off boo hoo" Gove me a fucking break. Maybe if you "cared" about the meaning so much you shouldn't have put those lyrics over fucking creep and called it ur own. If they do sue and get 100% then she is just getting what she's owed after playing this little stunt. They never even asked for 100 or even for any! and she is just crying like a bitch.

I think we, as a society, need to be careful about granting ownership over things like melodies or phrases. There is only so much of that stuff to go around. It's one thing if something is an obvious rip off and if the new song is raking in a ton of cash, but in a situation like this it just seems petty. And I say that as someone who, musically speaking, prefers Radiohead to Lana Del Rety. Wrong is wrong.

Lana Del Rey addressed this in her concert last night that I had the fortune of going to. She didn’t really talk much about the lawsuit in general, but what she did say is that she is definitely standing her ground, and that even if the song is taken down from everywhere, the ballads on it are definitely still true to her and she hopes that they will forever live on in her fans. I respect that she appears so calm and classy about the situation, it would be really frustrating to be in her shoes.

CONFIRMED: THE LAWSUIT ISN'T REAL. When the lawsuit isn't more than a publicity stunt by Lana to get free promo from her fans. It worked. A fan's post on her "Get Free" video sky-rocketed to 2.5 million views and that's just on KZfaq alone. As a music nerd, you should've been more surprised that Radiohead decided to, for whatever reason, sue Lana when they hadn't even sued Coldplay for "Yellow" by now. Or the song you'd mentioned in the video as well.

I'm certain it's the lawyers/record labels doing. doubt they care enough to do it themselves. A while ago the creator of minecraft was sued by Bethesda game studios because the name of his new game was called Scrolls and came out the same day as Skryim. The actual Director and overall creator of skyrim wasn't involved at all with the lawsuit. Games are different than music but Lawyers and big companies are the same in every way.

Creep is a well-used 4 chord progression, but not the “Don’t Stop Believing” I-V-vi-IV progression. Creep uses a Major IV-Minor iv progression. It’s the same type of progression that usually ended up on brockhampton songs like SUNNY. and WASTE., Bright Eyes “First Day Of My Life”, Modern Baseball’s “Hiding” “Re-Do” “Pothole”, and the end of “Going To Bed Now”, “Truce” by TØP, “Jacky’s Only Happy When She’s Up On The Stage” from Morrissey, “The End” by MCR, and probably most famously, “In My Life” and “You Wont See Me” by the Beatles. The list goes on and on. Point being, this progression is absolutely everywhere and not only does Thom have no basis to sue, he’d have a lot of ground to make up if he wanted to get them all.

There have been numerous debates over the years along these lines where one song is allegedly very similar to another, The Eagles Hotel California versus Jethro Tull We Used To Know for example. I saw an interview with Ian Anderson on this issue and he put it this way - There are only 12 notes to play with including all the sharps or flats and there are only a limited number of chords that can be produced that actually work. Even then there are only a limited number of chord progressions that actually work together so it is inevitable that with the millions of songs which have been written there are bound to be some songs which end up sounding similar to others certainly as far as chord progressions sound. Hotel California follows an 8 chord progression which is identical to that used in We Used to Know but the finished songs sound totally different, they are in different styles entirely. In this case, Creep versus Get Free we are looking at just 4 chords but to my ears the finished songs sounds very similar as far as the verse goes. It is just as well that whoever wrote the first 12 bar blues did not take exception to anybody else using it or we would have very little music to listen to, the 1, 1V V chord progression has been used by thousands of artists over the years.

lana sang "pretty when you cry" on her tour and switched the lyrics "[...] my memories, i don't need them" to "but i don't really mind, i have so much more than that / like my copyrights, i don't need them"

Lana says that there is a possibility that Get Free may be taken off future physical releases of her album, even if it’s the most intimate song for her being the “personal manifesto” of her life. That could mean that L4L with Get Free would become a rare(ish) collectors item.

On his first night in KZfaq, Anthony Fantano complained that the TV in his bedroom was broken, because it didn`t have "The Death Grips" channel. Fantano seemed to be under the impression that a TV channel existed that screened nothing but screaming homeless people, 24 hours a day. To appease Fantano, KZfaq staff compiled a number of Death Grips music video into a makeshift Death Grips channel, broadcast into Anthony's bedroom from a hastily constructed transmission tower on the KZfaq HQ. However, Fantano was unhappy with the channel they had created, moaning that it was "boring" because "there isn't enough rattling high hats". Staff edited all music videos to add trap influences, and at last the melon was satisfied. "On some days he'll watch the Death Grips channel for 17 hours straight" an insider told me. "He kneels in front of the TV, with his face about for inches from the screen, and say encouraging thing to the homeless person singing, like 'This song is a strong 9 to decent 10.' I think he thinks the singer can hear him."

this lawsuit is between the discographies y'all. radiohead dont like creep and probably dont care about this whole thing or probably know nothing about whats going on lmaoo. also is xl recordings (the discography that rh is signed up to) who have the rights to creep and the hollies already have the credits to creep so its kinda the hollies n radiohead "suing" lana

Silvana Pacheco exactly. Why bother suing over a song that they don’t even like? It seems very out of character for them.

Radiohead themselves said that they didn’t even like Creep and they tried to sabotage the recording, also it’s such a common chord progression I’ve heard so many times before. You could argue that up until the chorus of Get Free you hear that familiar chord progression but this is ridiculous cmon

Just a thought, but given that the writer of the hollies song was given writing credits for creep after suing, it's possible that it's him who's demanding they sue (again), given he has partial rights to creep.
