RAF Typhoon Clips Grass On Landing, RAF Coningsby, April 2016

This twin seater Typhoon clipped the grass while landing around late morning on Friday 22nd April 2016. It would appear that the pilot misjudged their decent as they were about to touch down on the threshold. Presumably by reducing the throttle a bit early or the aircraft lost height from a drop in wind speed? The two-seaters are normally used as trainers, so it's probable that a trainee pilot was flying the aircraft on this occasion. Afterward, two men in flight suits who I presume were the crew of the Typhoon, drove out to inspect the grass.

After many hours of investigation countless measurements and reviewing video after video the RAF determined that the landing was "short"

Guy Parris, Investigations usually go into the probable root causes of why the aircraft landed short. They look at training records. They may make specific recommendations for process changes.

It's Amazing to see the Eurofighter Typhoon clipped the Grass area in front of the Runway at the RAF Coningsby. After this the Pilot turn on the Afterburners again and started a new try for his Landing. Greetings From the German Aircraft Spotter Coleague! RAF Coningsby is a Very great Airbase. With very much Flying Operations. I hope i can take a Visit at Coningsby This Year, After the Royal International Air Tattoo in Fairford.

Coningsby has a spectator bank. The bank is set back about 20mtrs from the fence and clears the fence line as the footage shows. You can also view from the road side with a step ladder for take offs. Just don't stand directly behind the aircraft obviously and take ear plugs. I also did Lakenheath and Mildenhall which require ladders. You're not allowed to put ladders against the fence or the security will want words. Mildenhall has a flat bed lorry at the campsite but it can be busy at peak times.

Yes that correct, there are two gravel car parks on the West end of the runway. Can't miss them. I normally do the Loop which is about a couple of hours for me living near Wales. The East bases were a one off as there about a 4hr drive from me. I had been past Lakenheath a few moons ago but didn't stay for spotting. So I did both US and Coningsby while over that side of the country.

Don't understand the problem here. A pilot made a mistake, and I'm sure he caught hell for it as he should. Ground crews documented the mishap as they should. Aircrews will review and improve. Ground crews will examine and improve. Anyone involved in flight operations knows shit will happen. Anyone engaged in flight operations knows how you respond to events is more important than the event in and of itself. You can never fix the event. That said, you can take steps to prevent the event from repeating itself.

Pilots used to try and land as close to the threshold as they could - at RAF Coningsby when I was there (2000 - 2005) before the new runway there was a step at the runway end where so many aircraft had landed on the grass just short and taken chunks out of it - then they hit the concrete end edge of the runway. The step was over 12 inches high before the new runway was started.

It was a 2 seater Typhoon so was one of them training? After he hit the grass he bounced 50ft before going full afterburners! The second attempt wasn't much better he hit with a thud, Typhoons shock absorbers got a workout. Too me it looked like he was being given flight training and I imagine no one is perfect the first couple of times. Does anyone know if the 2seater Typhoon is just used for training or is it just used like the Tornado as a fighter bomber or is it both?

I was at the airbase a day or so after this event, and the reason the Typhoon touched down on the grass short of the runway was due to Coningsby's ILS being calibrated incorrectly. There was a Cobham Aviation DA42 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m6iRhqignMnDg6c.html that was doing approaches to test out the new calibration on the day I was there

I'm envious of the way you Brits can get so close to your military airfields for this sort of "planespotting". Try that here in the states and you'd get chased off at the VERY least. Many bases have signs along adjacent civilian roadways prohibiting stopping or parking. I dont even want to think about what would happen if you stood a ladder up to look above the barbed wire!!!
@jkmilitariauk
@jkmilitariauk 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that Kenny. I think in the UK the base staff know that spotters are only come to take photos and don't want to cause any trouble. Although when I was at Lakenheath and the Raptors were in. The local spotters said the police were moving people and stopping cars parking due to the increase in spotters. You could tell the atmosphere was a bit heated when some civilian workers on the other side of the wire at Mildenhall told us what they thought of our presence with some sarky comments as they drove by. It can be the same situation at the Mach Loop at peak times too and spotters come into conflict with the farmers by blocking gateways. So we might have the privilege removed if people don't respect the bases.
@chadmeyer9500
@chadmeyer9500 7 жыл бұрын
"Kenny" is either a lying sack of shit claiming to be an "American" despite a foreign passport if he actually lives in the U.S. at all or an actual American too stupid to find a parking lot adjacent to an "air base" OR simply go on the base itself. Which is something American citizens can do at MOST military bases in the U.S. with very little trouble. Not to mention MOST "air bases" in the U.S. are not USAF bases but instead are Air National Guard or USAF Reserve facilities where Guard and Reserve personnel can be found at LEAST once a month. If you have half a clue you can have an "airshow" on a regular basis and don't have to wait a year for the government to finally decide to let you go look at the hardware and personnel you pay for. Especially at the MANY "bases" where Guard and Reserve units share the "base" with commercial and civil aviation. You know what civil aviation is, right? That's where private citizens own and operate their own personal aircraft. Kind of a foreign concept to the overwhelming majority of "citizens" of other countries around the world where only a handful of well-heeled individuals have airplanes. Hell, its a little known fact that in the U.S. you don't even need a PILOT'S LICENSE to own and operate your own plane as long as you don't fly above 15,000 feet or in other controlled airspace, which is a tiny fraction of U.S. airspace overall. The ready availability and near omni-presence of aviation in the U.S. is a major reason we don't generally go completely nutso over airshows. They ARE "popular" but mainly because of the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels and the opportunity to actually go check out our hardware we pay for up close and personal since many military airshows are held in conjunction with an "open house" event at the "base" hosting it. The Thunderbirds and Blue Angels make a big deal of segregating their aircraft and even having armed guards, but that's primarily to keep away "Americans" of European origin that go apeshit over seeing a fighter plane on the ground and in person. And of course even as "demonstration" aircraft they ARE still combat aircraft and part of the inventory. They usually claim that within 48 hours of being deactivated as an aerial demonstration unit and being called up for active duty the F-16s and F-18s will be plain old gray fighter planes with the fancy paint jobs just a memory. If I"m not mistaken most of the European military flight demo units don't even use front-line fighter aircraft but play with trainers instead. The "best" pilots in the military doing airshow duty in trainers. Priceless. I seriously doubt any real American is going to go to a European airshow and be amazed. Maybe you folks should do less talking about America repeating internet and media bullshit and more learning about America.
