You know you’d think an ancient battle cruiser could take the fire from a wraith cruiser for a few hours or days even at 20% with the way they hyped up the gap in Tech between the Ancients and wraith but you know, plot
@dirkvervecken4054
@dirkvervecken4054 Жыл бұрын
1: One should also take into account that the cruiser has been floating in space for 10000+ years exposed to who knows what. 2: during the war between the wraith and the ancients, most of those ships were equipped with ZPM's, strengthening the shields far higher.

We also have no idea if the shields of any these ships relied on scaling too i.e. it takes more energy to power them from 0%-20% as opposed to 80%-100%.
@HizuNagho
@HizuNagho Жыл бұрын
I think it's easy enough to fill that in. After all as Dirk said the ship has been floating in space being exposed to hard radiation for millennia. It's fair to assume that its systems would take some degradation through that, even with how durable Ancient tech seems to be at lasting eons without any maintenance. That "Shields at 20%" call-out could be relative to the new, lower shield strength after that much neglect. Kind of like a battery that loses its ability to hold charge over time.

This appears to be a continuity error. The chair and by extension drones require alot of power to use, certainly enough to keep the shields up longer. So either he sabotaged the ship and used the chair to transfer power to weapons or its a mistake.

Or - having the bridge get blown up resulted in a whole lot of systems no longer connected - leaving a nice pool of power available for the weapons?

@looseycanon

@@icer1249 Yeah, I don't think that's the case. Do we know, how sheild technology actually works? In most scify, everybody's talking that shield is at x% strenght but, usually, until the shield collapses, it will take the damage and even if the shield is obliterated, it still protects the ship from that shot, assuming it was not a continuous shot (think Mimbary weapons from Babylon 5). This has always lead me to believe, it's not the actual shield, that's failing, rather, enregy reserve in a battery of sorts is getting depleted. Assuming that is how shields operate, this has two implications. One, those shields might actually take even more power than you claim, and two, if shields indeed have that battery, they're effectively independent system of the rest of the ship, meaning them failing before has no bearing on the other systems. What I'd want to know, would be, why shields getting pounded can result in loss of power in other systems.
@yanivkhan5792
@yanivkhan5792 Жыл бұрын
From previous episodes in both stargate atlantis and stargate sg1 it was said shields take a ton of power to keep running, so much so that earth only got to use the technology after they were introduced to naquadah generators. Still, if they try to power the shields from the ship's main power system, that would take up all the available power. Based on the fact that they usually have to break off from battle to recharge the shields this suggests that their work around is to have a large bank of capacitors or batteries that are dedicated to powering the shields and are recharged off of the ship's main power generator. The ancient warship used technology similar to ZPMs to generate power constantly from subspace. But it wasn't anywhere near as powerful. So it stands to reason that after being damaged and adrift for 10,000 years, they were unable to recharge the shields and so the 20% that was stated would be all the power remaining stored in the capacitors. We also know from previous episodes and storylines that shields tend to lose efficiency as they lose charge. So they become unable to stonewall all the energy from enemy weapons fire and there is some amount of bleed through which causes damage. Also its true that the drone weapons system on planet based outposts and settlements like the city ships required at least one ZPM to power them but dedicated space based weapons platforms like the satellites and ships systems were designed for use with less powerful energy supplies.

That is why you don’t put the bridge on the exterior of the hull.
@BogeyTheBear
@BogeyTheBear Жыл бұрын
That's one way to do it. Navy ships today bury their weapons and sensor control centers deep in the ship (CIC- Combat Information Center). But old timey battleships simply made the bridge the most heavily-armored part of the superstructure, calling it the citadel.
@jeffers9001
@jeffers9001 Жыл бұрын
@@BogeyTheBear I’m aware modern ships put the bridge on the exterior but comparing a naval vessel to a space vessel isn’t really relevant when you compare the two different environments they operate in and the advanced technology of the ancients had. It’s just a stupid design choice.

@@BogeyTheBear I didn’t misunderstand, I’m saying there is no reason a spaceship needs an external bridge, a boat makes sense for navigation as you can actually navigate by looking around, using maps, compasses, stars etc but that is not possible in space which makes an external bridge in any sense a pointless vulnerability on a spaceship.

Keep in mind that air force pilots are required to have advance degrees just to apply for the position. Most fighter pilots have a masters degree in a STEM field. Although, a bachelors and 5 years experience in the field also meets the minimum experience requirement. On paper a BA qualifies, but they don't really accept people with non-technical degrees in practice. So it's not hard to believe he would have a fair amount of technical knowledge and training with ancient technology.
