I think people fail to realize the underlying message of the show, or at least in Ragnar's arc. It is about overcoming the idea of fate and realize you have a say in your life. This is not necessarily going against a deterministic view, but rather the religious view of fate. In fact, when he says "he became earl and king "because of other people's actions", this might signal a deterministic viewpoint, as he is forced to do such things because of his environment, but still it does not mean the gods have a say. Ragnar, still, always did what he did because HE did it. In fact, when he talks with the blind man, the blind man says they won't be at his execution place until tomorrow, which actually disproves the Seer's prophecy! Because the Seer said it would be THE day that the blind man sees Ragnar, not the next day. In fact Ragnar actually laughs here and then admits his atheism and quais-soft determinism to the Seer who then appears. While all the other characters blabber on about fate and whatnot, especially Lagertha who ends up losing her child because of that mindset like Ragnar said, Ragnar is the only one who realizes that all his victories and losses are his alone to account for, and ultimately rejects the beliefs of his surrounding world.
@markward39813 жыл бұрын
You have point but it is but more complex. The show plays with the idea of fate and no fate. Notice how Ragnar went to seer , later Rejected what the seer said while he imagined or had a vision of the seer ( it is open to interpretation as the show never confirms nor negates what happened on the road to his death) It is the old story or fleeing from fate to run directly to your fate.
@EMMYK19163 жыл бұрын
In fairness that's a pile of horseshit. Its a loosely based tale on written accounts. I think you Americans don't realise the word fiction applies heavily to drama. There's no this, nor that lesson. Just a story. We should learn REAL life lessons by living, observing, travelling & experiencing as much as we can. As the Aussies say.."pull your head in". How do I know this? Been there...

@danseeley63935 жыл бұрын
@@DarkRocker269 Ragnar's ambition is what made the Vikings famous for success. I think Ragnar was always true to his faith.. This show doesn't show true history, Bjorn was never Lagertha's, Ragnar never had a brother named Rollo, Halfdan was also Ragnar's son etc...
@DarkRocker2695 жыл бұрын
@@danseeley6393 I never said the show was even remotely historically accurate. But in his scenes with Ecbert and the Seer, Ragnar denies his belief in the gods. Doesn't seem like he has any reason to lie about that, especially as he is about to die, and denying the gods ould make them angry at him.

Man is the master of his own fate, not the gods. Gods are the man's creation to give answers that they are too afraid to give themselves. Power is dangerous. It attracts the worst and corrupts the best. Power is only given to those who are prepared to lower themselves to pick it up.
