8 жыл бұрынTake a trip back to the turn of the last century as we ride on a historic steam train in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. Railtown 1897 is home to the historic Jamestown, CA Sierra Railway yard. We will ride behind one of the weekend steam excursions behind historic Sierra Rwy locomotive number 3. Sierra 3 was built in 1891 and is one of the oldest operating steam locomotives in California. Number 3 is also well known for appearing in hundreds of Hollywood films, TV shows, and commercials over the years.

CoasterFan2105 imagine that on the Pere Marquette......oh my god. Literally the only difference between the two is that the polar express has a bit higher pitch. Actually which company made the whistle? I know that it's ether a five or six chime whistle but I don't know if it's a Nathan or Lima.

It's an original Lima 5-Chime steptop with a cast iron bell. Been on the locomotive since 1947.

It's also the same whistle used on the engine in Back to the Future part III, which ironically uses Sierra Railroad #3. The director of The Polar Express, who also directed the Back to the Future trilogy, confirmed he used the sounds of this locomotive for the Polar Express, and even hid some Easter eggs from the trilogy throughout the film, including the reference to Doc Brown blowing the engine's whistle and saying, "I wanted to do that all my life!"

Truly the #3 is the pride and joy of the Sierra Railroad during its movie making years, more so than any of her other sisters on the line. Sound like she's wearing a Rio Grande or Nathan 5 chime, which suits her perfectly.

It’s actually a Lima 5 chime 5” diameter whistle built for a shay locomotive. The bowl was modified to have a 2” pipe connection instead of the factory made 1.5” pipe connection.

I love the whistle of Sierra Railway #3. Mainly how it sounds in Back to the Future Part 3 and the Polar Express for Pere Marquette 1225 (Which is one of the references to Back to the Future Part 3).

Rode that train as a kid from places like Chinese Camp, Oakdale and North through Sonora etc. Grandpa's place was off the highway right next to the tracks between Jimtown and Sonora. Brings tears to my eyes.

Yes. A scale model (about 1:8 scale I believe. The model was about 3 feet high). Most likely metal like the real thing. Just a small version

+Owen Meschter Yes, this was the locomotive from Back To The Future III. It has been in many films over the years. And yes, that is indeed why 3 is called the "Movie Queen".

This is such a lovely video! I'm now volunteering there and she's in overhaul right now so she's getting fixed up and all the movie stuff is being taken off. We should hopefully have steam running again sometime next year. It would be amazing if you came back up here to see steam engines again when we finally run one or more of them again😁

@CoasterFan2105 she's still in the roundhouse with the tender in front of her for some reason. I dont know when she'll run. Also the 34 has been sitting in the for 44 years. I don't know if she'll run either.

john erikson The doc said he put in his own version of Presto logs in the firebox so he made the fire hotter, the boiler psi went up and the train went faster. In theory. Lol. Remember rods and pistons can only go so fast before failure like car engines.

This engine was in the 1963 to 1970 tv show Petticoat Junction. I would like to see this in person, especially if they paint it to look like the Hooterville Cannonball from the show. That would be something!

@@aussie_trainspotting_videos I knew about it's appearance in Back to the Future part 3, but when I saw a video of the Casey Jones opening theme, that's when I discovered that the Sierra 3 was featured in the show. I haven't watched any full episodes yet, but with all the movies and TV programs that starred this locomotive, it needs to be preserved to it's fullest potential and to be ran on numerous times for future generations of steam train enthusiasts to catch a glimpse of how the history of this engine brought us where we are from the TV and movies that starred this engine.

The Pere Marquette's whistle should be replaced by Sierra Railway No. 3 and Sierra Railway No. 3 whistle should be replaced by Pere Marquette. So basically they swap and the whistles would fit alot more to the both of the trains.

+JackSpicer1992 Thank you! It really depends on what the video is. Filming can take anywhere from a day to several months depending on how big the project is. In this case, all of the clips were filmed on one day (About 8 hours) and then another few hours to edit the video and upload it.

the little engine is both overrated and underrated, few realize its the only Rogers ten wheeler anywhere that runs even tho there were thousands of them at one point, shes a treasure.

It’s not gonna be for a while. I was at Railtown a couple months ago and 3 is stripped down to just her boiler for the 10 year rebuild.
