Hello I am Dujja from Pakistan. We used to have steam locomotive and sadly replaced by Diseal engines. Our rail way tracks laid by British engineers thanks to them. We are still using these tracks. I watched your program and like it very much. You both have delivered a great deal of information. I wish i could visit England and see these black steam engins. Thank you for sharing such nice videos. Regards

i am saying to my own mind how much you citizens up there in UK have respect, love & enthusiasm for your heritage- especially the steam locomotives is having an overwhelming welcome from the common citizens, i must deeply appreciate the promotors of this heritage railway to believe in their project that brings so much of cheer to specialised tourists that get so attracted to the steam like a living beast roaring & breathing with oneness & togetherness on a journey of nostalgia- some one said the the Sun never sets on the British Empire- its simply true because of this strong civic sense & appreciation of the people living in this great country- with warm regards Rahul

Thank you for a superb set of four DVDs. Such a shame the series had to end prematurely. With all the cookery and antiques programme on UK television it is a pity that space couldn't be found for heritage lines. Well done for trying!

I know you are referring to my mention of it but by implication you already think she is pretty yourself, and are attaching some importance to it. For example, if you did not think she was pretty, you would have no reason to be surprised that I left it out. But you were in fact surprised. Therefore you have shot yourself in the foot with your remark.

This is absolutely wonderful and it brings me great memories of steam locomotives. I have always wondered why and how the heavy puffs sound with lots of smoke coming out of the main chimney is made? Can anyone explain this to me? I would be grateful to know. Thank you so much.
@C.I...
@C.I... 4 ай бұрын
What comes out of the chimney is a mixture of exhausted steam/water vapour from the cylinders (the puffs), and an amount of smoke/air from the fire in the firebox. The "puff" is caused by the exhaust valve in a cylinder releasing the steam at either end of its stroke, and the part you can see is water vapour, as steam is invisible. A steam locomotive will usually have two or three cylinders, and each will exhaust steam when it reaches either end of the stroke. The ferocity of the puff will vary based on how hard the locomotive is working, with the loudest being produced when the driver has the "reverser" fully forward/back (which means steam is allowed into each cylinder for a longer portion of its stroke, and hence is higher in pressure when it is released at the end of the stroke), and has the throttle (or "regulator") fully open. It is important for the exhaust steam to be piped into the smokebox (the black bit with the door at the front) and up the chimney (rather than just exhausting into the air from where the cylinders are) because this is one way in which the draught is pulled on the fire to make it hotter and to suck air through it; The other is a system of deliberate jets of steam (called the "blower"), which is used to induce a similar draught on the fire when the locomotive is not moving (or is not working hard enough for the exhaust beats to do this effectively). If there is no draught from either source, the fire will be starved of air, and if there is a lot of coal burning in the firebox, this will cause the smoke to turn sooty and black (indicating incomplete combustion of the coal). A good fire will produce a light grey smoke in between the puffs of water vapour.

That's correct. Here in New Zealand our track gauge is only 3'6" which is over 14 inches narrower than UK and USA track, but we run ex-British Rail rolling stock with narrow-gauge bogies without any clearance problems.

I can understand maybe not needing gloves but you dont want to take cinder or flying dirt to the eyes, its just a matter of common safety, still she does look nice even with a little dirt on her from fireing, this is a differant practice then what I am used to seeing in north america, even on the modern diesel electros they wear safety eyewear, and it was done even in 1910 ish as evedenced by old copys of railroad magazines and journels from the time, its just for me unknown not to see and notice it from my experiances

How nice, this video shows just how equal women are. As with most labor the average woman does the work of 1/4 of a male, but they demand equal pay, 1/4 wages IS equal pay. Working on trains is a man's job, like all the other hard labor. If anyone thinks this is sexist, that means sexist is to tell the truth. Now this young lady would bring some beautiful babies into the world. I think if she really knew what a wife and mother is she would learn she has the highest respect and social status. How dare I try to advocate tradition something that has played a major role in the survival of our species for tens of thousands of years. Thomas
