It only takes a fraction of the time if you DON’T dig out all that dirt. Just loosen up the first few inches and then rock the head in directions. That will simultaneously widen the whole and compress the dirt so none falls into the fitting. I replace these 20 at a time it’s much easier that way

Instead of unscrewing the whole head from the elbow, is it not ok to unscrew the guts out of the tube and put the guts of the head back in ? I did it once, seems to be working fine

When it comes to replacing the heads I just replace the whole thing it's easier and cheaper for me

Can you show a video if one were to replace a pop up 1/2 inch to a rainbird 5000 3/4 inch.

Just dig out to expose the funny pipe connector. Cut off the 1/2” fitting when a utility knife. Insert the 3/4” fitting. Screw in the new sprinkler head. By far the hardest step is getting the new fitting into the existing funny pipe. A heat gun on an extension cord can be a godsend and save lots of digging
