The reason Cher seemed awkward, from what I read years ago, was because she had a panic attack backstage. Jack Nicholson encouraged her to go out and get it over with, but he was prepared to handle the presentation if she couldn't do it.

Exactly. If Mary Poppins was nominated for Best Picture , another live action/animation hybrid Disney movie, why not Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Makes no sense. I think Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is equally as good as Mary Poppins. Also, Big should have been nominated as well.

The Wizard it should have won. Sincerely, Rain Man is one of the worst winners of best picture. Not just Roger Rabbit, also Mississippi Burning, Bird, Working Girl, Gorilas in the Mist, A Fish Called Wanda, Die Hard, Beetlejuice, Dangerous Liasons, The Last Temptation of the Christ and Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios were defeated. But definitely Roger should have won

As a mild high functioning autistic individual, I feel represented to have found this movie as a high school grad almost a decade ago. Then last night, I rediscovered Rain Man on Netflix.

It puzzles me how common autism suddenly is - and that autistic people don't seem to differ from non-autistic people in any obvious way. I grew up with the notion that autism is a rare and severe condition but these days it seems as common as Aspergers. If you are a high functioning person, I doubt you can identify with Ray in any meaningful way, anymore than I can. But hey, if it makes you feel good to "feel represented" go ahead...

Oops. I wasn't finished. Cher came under fire for the bored way she presented the biggest award. Also for that bland (for her) black sheath. Cher later said she was suffering from the flu, hence her lackluster behavior. The other item is that the traditional Hollywood loving Carr wanted Cher to present the Best Actor award but Cher nixed that and insisted in the Big One.

Also it is traditional for the previous years winner for Best Actress to present the Best Actor award. There were rumours she almost didnt show up. It wasnt a last minute thing either. She had made up her mind long before to not go - hence no custom made Mackie gown. That was off the rack Mackie.

She was awful. She gave space for applause for the first two pictures she read then sped up everything as if the other nominees somehow weren’t worth the trouble. And then blurted out the winner with no expression whatsoever. Awful.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Big should have been nominated. I think they are better films than Rain Man. I don't mind Rain Man winning because it's a great film too. Robert Zemeckis was definitely snubbed for directing this year. That was a clever movie that Feature iconic cartoon characters. Penny Marshall should've been nominated for directing Big as well.

I saw 4 of the 5 movies nominated that year, except for Working Girl. I prefer Dangerous Liaisons and Mississippi Burning. Rain Man is not my favorite movie, but i enjoyed watching it. Dustin Hoffman in this movie is great! P.S.: 0:02 Was a shock when i discovered recently that River Phoenix and Joaquin Phoenix are brothers! I just discovered this one month ago!

ALL of the other four nominees were better than "Rain Man," I thought. Also, "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" was seriously snubbed here; It most definitely should've been nominated for Best Picture. It should've been recognized better all-around by the Academy than it was.

Scott M I have to admit that I only saw Rain Man once. But I only saw most of the other four nominees only once too, and knew that I liked all of them better. So probably just the one viewing of Rain Man was enough for me to get an accurate opinion of what I thought of it.
