I love your style of skirt. I have made several from your pattern and wear them riding and training my horses. I use elastic in the waist band and wear leggings underneath (just in case something were to happen and I come off and the skirt gets hung up on the saddle or something). I absolutely love wearing skirts in everyday life and, like you said and contrary to popular belief, they aren't hard or inconvenient to wear.

Yes, leggings or shorts underneath is a must!! I have had those "whoops" moments! They are definitely not hard nor inconvenient. Sometimes I get hung up on something around the homestead with a skirt, a bit more than if I wore pants, but patches and creative stitching around tears just adds unique embellishments. 😂😂

I love wearing skirts because they make me feel feminine not to mention just how comfortable they are. The thing that surprises me the most is how many compliments I’ve received. I’ve even been thanked by an older gentleman in the grocery store for dressing modestly. I don’t think we realize just how much our apparel (and the way we wear it) impacts others around us. I'm feeling the same way in my mature years. I find myself hanging about the house in my nightgown not because I'm too lazy to dress but simply because it's more comfortable than jeans. So I've been thinking about making skirts and/or dresses for everyday. I have some old jeans that are mostly comfortable but the newer styles are so tight and not really flattering to the mature and chubby figure. If you wish to make a skirt as shown in the video, try to make the first tier long enough to go past the hip area. That is to avoid the bulk that make the fluffier of us appear larger than life. Also make the first tier as hip skimming (not tight; just barely gathered for comfort) as possible and leave the most gathering for other tiers. I have sat and thought about this as you can tell.

If you do the overlap going towards the back you could add some nice deep pockets on both sides! My creative wheels are turning!! @@mariecraig239 That is a great idea, too. I also thought of putting in pleats in line with the knee. I've had that on skirts before and it's quite flattering to many figures because pleats lie much closer to the body than gathers. Plus it saves working out the ruffling at the waistline.

Jumpers are my favourite! Nothing tight around the waist, and don't need to be washed all the time, like a dress - only the tshirt or top underneath needs regular cleaning. Only in cold weather do I bother wearing something underneath my skirt or jumper. I have bought black long underwear in a larger size. They look a lot like leggings but aren't skin tight. They are cotton and very comfortable. Looks just like leggings if something is revealed.

As a primary/elementary school teacher for children diagnosed with behavioral and emotional disabilities, I found slightly above-ankle-length long shirts or dresses were ideal. No butt-crack reveals, no gymnastically contorted squats required of mini-skirts (which, as a child of the 60s, I had once adored), and no chilly legs. I could squat/sit comfortably on the floor in any position. Also, I always had ample-sized pockets which were essential. If for any reason I needed a shorter skirt, such as wading in a creek, a few twists and tucks took care of that.

I couldn’t believe it. There was another woman looking at clothes at the same time as me, and she said, “they have nothing respectful for women, I’m heading to the men’s department” I thought it was a brilliant idea! I love the skirts. I’ve made several already and contemplating a reclaimed wool patch work most recently. Would have loved to have made one before winter, but other projects took priority. I will get to it, though. Used to be everyone wore tunics, but skirts have been the symbol of modern femininity for hundreds of years, now, in many cultures. I don’t wear skirts exclusively, yet, but when I do I can do everything I do in pants and they certainly are more comfortable and likely healthier, too. I haven’t found jeans comfortable for many years. I think it’s the fact that our skin gets thinner as we age and anything too binding is painful, but I doubt it is ever healthy to wear tight clothing. I have dressed for comfort and health for years, now. Thanks for sharing! I have adopted so many of your great tips.

I'm 4'11" too! I quit growing around 13/14. My problem is my width 😬 I have something wrong with me that makes me very large despite not eating much. Also I have big legs so bottoms never fit my waist if the fit my legs and big arms so in order to get a top to fit my arms, it's huge and the shoulder seam is down my arm and looking sloppy., not even petite stuff fits right. I've recently decided to buy shirts big enough to fit my arms and I'm reducing the width of the shoulder so that the seam is more in line with my shoulder bend. I've done one so far and a HUGE improvement. Haven't figured out what to do with the sleeves yet bc it's plaid so a tricky pattern to work with.

WOW! I'm not alone! Lol I just thought I was weird because suddenly, out of nowhere, I want to wear skirts. I bought some off of Amazon because NO stores had any that I liked. Since I'm a little older than ummm... 20... I needed something that wasn't up to my rear end. Now I'm excited because I can make my own! 😃 Glad to see others who are embracing more modest clothing.

I love the “dressing modest” style. Lately, I find myself wearing mostly dresses with the three or four tier ( the frontier type of skirt) I do prefer dresses because I find it more practical in the hot climate I live year round, although it’s fun to through a sweater or a long sleeve shirt in the evenings if it’s chilling. I agree with you, it’s not only a modest way to dress but also super comfy and for some reason I find myself prettier and more girly like with this style

Just found your videos on making the patchwork skirt and decided to watch this one as well. Since I was a pre-teen I have worn only pants and shorts. Long back story to why. I did wear skirts for church and special occasions. But, other than that, only pants and shorts. I'm 51 now and recently felt like I wanted to wear skirts more often. But, all the skirts I have (no dresses at all) are nice, church/special occasion skirts. And with the cost of everything, buying isn't an option unless I can find them at the thrift store. Unfortunately, most of those are too short (below the knees is a must for me). So, I am delving into the world of sewing from thrifted fabric. Why not? I spend most of my time doing house work and yard work. Thanks for this video. And for all those who have commented that they also wear skirts all the time (especially those who are choosing to do so for the sake of aligning themselves with scripture). It has encouraged me to give it a go after being a pants/shorts only gal.

@@Three721 I actually make my own bloomers. The original pattern was for track pants. So, I cut them a bit wider (I make them out of non-stretch cotton) and the length has to be a bit longer than you think so they don't rise up when squatting. Both the waist and below knee bands have elastic. For the knee I measure under my knee and cut the elastic to that length, sewing the ends together is enough to draw them in without squeezing the area. And then I make my skirts long enough to cover them. I would highly encourage you to make your own.

I have always found jeans horribly uncomfortable too. I think it’s something with the way I’m proportioned. A few summers ago I started wearing an old denim shirt-dress and quickly decided I needed more. I reworked a long sleeved one-added pockets and shortened the sleeves-and started calling them my “house dresses.” Our grandmothers were onto something with house dresses and aprons! I have worn those two dresses thin, so it’s time to find a new daily uniform. I think these skirts may be exactly what I am looking for!

@@sandyp2485 Of course 🧡 I also initially looked online (both for the needles & thread) 1st stop was Joann's. That was where I found the darning set. I utilized their 40% in-app coupon. Set included 3 sizes of needles and a translucent needle container (w/ discount ~$2.75). They did have some sock thread but colors were Ltd so went over to Michaels to look there. Better selection of Kryon. Their sale was BOGO1/2. So I bought 2. I think those were about $6-$8(?) (Ps: Michael's coupon policies seemed to have changed over what they used to be) I did go back to Joann's for an addl. skein of thread & applied coupon as well. Xtra info- The needles online were ~$6. For me it made sense to get them at J's bc I needed to see what sock weight thread was. I tried many yrs ago to darn socks with cotton weight sewing thread. Found out why sock weight is recommended. When I attempted with "cotton button" thread I tried for 40 min and finally tossed it to the side in frustration. Cotton weight and sock weight are very different That Kryon thread is awesome - and I love working with it. Since my last comment I've worked thru 2 more socks. I think I've got 4 left. Ps: I wash these wool socks on the delicate cycle, turn them inside out (per manufacturer directions) & hang dry them. I treat them like I would a good wool sweater. Sorry for lengthy msg - but hope it's helpful 🌻

I must say; those are some of the prettiest sweaters I have ever seen. Love your skirts as well and especially how thrifty you made them.

I just found your channel. I, too, am a skirt person. I just love yours. I make my skirts as well. I am an older gal and have found that the gents tend to open doors more often than if i am wearing pants. Thank you for these tutorials.

I have been wearing skirts/dresses for over 30 years! Love your reasons. Mine are similar.

Glad I stumbled upon this video! My skirts sisters! I wear long skirts almost exclusively. They just look better on me than short skirts or pants do.

Hey Mrs Rain, I get a compliment almost every time I wear the skirts I made from your pattern, and that's the only thing I wear. For the first time I met another viewer wearing your pattern and right away I new it was enspired by you. We were so happy to see someone else wear this style skirt in the same town. I smile with joy everytime I think about it. Thanks again
