Ray, when you unplug the fuel pressure regulator, you change the fuel pressure, which WILL change the fuel trims. This is not confirmation of a vacuum leak.

Yes, fuel trims are trying to compensate for too much fuel pressure. It's like creating one problem that cancels out another but only gonna work at idle, no load etc.

Seems like it would be easier and more definitive to test the pressure regulator by using a vacuum tester to put a vacuum on it and seeing if it holds vacuum. Connecting and disconnecting the vac line from it changes the fuel pressure in the rail so it’s not surprising the fuel trims change too.

The CEL is the service engine soon light, its working fine! Its not a pressure regulator as there is no return line, its a pressure sensor to tell the ecu to vary voltage to the pump to keep consistent pressure. Of course taking away its vacuum will change it. That hole in the intake tube was a vacuum leak. Its where the iat sensor goes on 96-00, in 01-04 the iat is built into the maf, but most aftermarket cold air pipes have the hole there to cover use for all years. Fuel leaking out the tank is most likely the rubber from the tank to filler neck.

If my knowledge of Fords is correct, which may not be, the automatic transmissions rely on the MAF sensor to tell the computer how much air is being drawn into the engine, so if there's a vacuum leak after the sensor it can actually cause transmission problems if it's bad enough.

Honestly, there is a far easier way to check for vacuum leaks. I do it all of the time when checking carbs and crankcases. I use a Craftsman hand-held vacuum pump. You're plugging this and that off, while running back and forth to your scan tool. In 5 minutes you could have checked everything for a vacuum leak. Sometimes Old School is better than the latest, greatest scan tool.

correct me if i'm wrong, but that would certainly verify that there was a leak, but not where? he did something similar when he capped off the entire vaccum system. @@user-dc2kg2hm8c any brake vaccum bleed kit pump would do the trick. If you want to go full redneck you can use a propane torch (not lit) or flamable spray and put it where you suspect the leak. If you have a leak in the area it will suck up fuel as well as air and the engine sound will change.

Long terms are a trend to help compensate for aging and or wear. Say ypu have a small vac leak that's been there for a while, y o ur long terms will be positive (adding) around 10 or so for example. Shorts will waver back and forth around 0 up and down. Remember with long term at 10 pos. , it's added to the baseline, so zero os actually plus 10 over what's expected. This helps in starting etc since long term sets the baseline bit if you hit 30 or 25 on long terms they peg and trip the mil. On an older car if your long terms are 10 or less either way is generally considered good. Computer can actually adjust a lot. I took off my oil cap and was at plus 45.

Hey Ray. I love your persistence in finding problems and your patience in dealing with them, not to mention your wacky humor. I want to add something though. Unhooking the pressure sensor causes the sensor to reference atmospheric pressure instead of manifold pressure, which causes about an 8 psi fuel pressure increase. That could mask some other lean condition. Just a guess, but it's possible that the aftermarket cold air pipe doesn't match up with the mass air sensor properly, so the air reading is skewed, at least at idle. I've had this problem on Mustang cold air systems that aren't properly matched up. Increasing the fuel pressure might be compensating your fuel trims and leading you astray. Also, it might be missing the intake air temp sensor (where you plugged the pipe) or the sensor might be located wrong, which might be adding another variable. Thanks again for all that you do!
