in "folks this ain't normal" Joel lays out some reasons why tillage based systems are too intense on the land (depletes soil etc). He points out that it takes a combination of perennial plants and herbivores to improve the land.

It is great to see a return to the right way of raising food. All life forms deserve a decent living and especially the ones that give up their lives as our food. We need to give them a humane living for their ultimate scrifice.

We live in Northern WI. On a 170+ acre farm where we raise; USDA 100% Grass fed black Angus beef, pastured raised pork and chickens(for eggs/meat). We have issues finding customers. It may because we are in a farming community(and people grow their own) or people just don't care about what they eat. Unfortunately, we are only State inspected( so we can't ship out of state). We charge a fair price at $ 4.99 a lb. for ground beef. I guess we won't go hungry ;) Cozy Acres

That lamb, lostkafei, was born the morning I arrived to film. What you see is a bit of its umbilical chord, which will dry and drop off later, I believe. The other lamb next to it is its 'twin'. They were healthy and happy and did not want to lose site of their mom (who was gentle and patient with me when I came close).

Nor am I arguing against specialization. What I am fundamentally against is why my food is imported from another country or even 2000 miles away. The argument is that food can't be grown in or near cities but I think it is possible and that it can be economically feasible.

The industry had to move in the direction that it has to maximize the production capability to try to feed our growing population. We were told the cows should be bred back within a few months of having their calf, to keep them in the "rhythm" of their breeding cycle. Is this true, or is it stressing the cow too much? We have only two family heifers that will be having their first calves and want to do what is best for them. Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Kudos al production team y Abundant Farm. This highlights rationale for 'naturalistic' production. Antibiotic residues (contained in food animals) don't likely cause resistance. Over-use & over-prescription do. But animals may contain harmful agents (e.g. microbial pathogens, mercury, arsenic, endocrine disruptors, etc); clearly food quality (taste/nutrition) is not positively impacted by concentrated/confined animal feeding operations (i.e. CAFOs). Keep up the good planet, -Huckleberry Fox

It's sustainable the way they're doing it. It's more 'natural' but not by any means nature. Done right, soil is actually ADDED rather than depleted. Less energy costs used than industrial farming.

Captain, I thought you were a bit more livestock-savvy than that. Antibiotics are not used to treat internal and external parasites. Insecticides are used for external parasites, and anthelmintics are used for internal parasites. Still, there are withdrawal times when using anthelmintics before an animal is harvested.

If an animal is to be killed for food, this is the life they deserve to live before that reality. It's beautiful to see these people care for their animals so well, even though they are going to killed one day. This is the way all farms should be. :) Thank you so much for sharing this with us!

I don't disagree with that. Technological advances in food production will be necessary with a growing population. I truly believe though that we haven't exhausted our natural options yet. An example would be the Chaga at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. There's a population density there comparable to most metropolitan areas. Yet they live in the middle of dense forest growth. They manage to grow everything they eat within a few yards of where they live.
@captainspirou
@captainspirou 16 жыл бұрын
When he talks about antibiotics I believe he means the standard practice of feeding cattle antibiotics because they get sick from eating grain otherwise. There is almost no objection to giving animals antibiotics if they are legitimately sick. But if what you are feeding them causes them to get sick to the point where you give them antibiotics then it's an issue.

@hotblondemakenze Because plants have a few more nutrients that meat lacks. Plus, there aren't the saturated fatty acids that meat and animal fat has. However, conventionally-raised meat is well-known to be far less healthy than home-grown, free-range, grass-fed meat is. It's the same for fruits and vegetables too. Even though I was trying to say that a meat-diet is better than a veggie-diet, you do have a point. Besides, folks eat too much meat anyway. So I digress from this discussion. :)

@miguelmxdecarvalho At the time that this was filmed, Mr. Jondle invited me to come back for the slaughtering of the chickens. Though I would not have minded watching myself - and I think it is important, as a meat eater, to have a grasp of the complete process, if, for nothing else, out of respect for the animal who gave their life - I didn't feel the general public was ready for such an activity. Time has passed, & I think, if done with respect to the animal, I would film it now.

they do not put manure in animal feed. they put it on grass and feeds to raise the animals. but we do the same with the veggies you eat so blow smoke somewhere else. And plus people eat animals for iron. which is the only source im aware of for people to get it. and feeding animals is a great use of farmland cause it pretty much is like a nutrient storage container.

@TheMatt455 Just to answer your question. we don't have any moral obligation to bring so many animals into existence. If bring more animals into existence would be considered a positive thing we should raise mice instead of cows, because cows consume much more resources and are far less efficient than mice. But this is of course a ridiculous example, but just to reply the common assumption that bring a lot of animals into existence is better than bring a few.

I once went to buy a rooster for my hens and could not find any but this one guy's who exclusively raised roosters for sale. He had them packed in an un-healthy place but they all looked great and beautiful b/c he put antibiotic in their water. Well, I raised my chickens naturally, so I let this gorgeous rooster free in my large, grassy back yard with 5 or 6 more hens and plenty of sunlight. About 3 days later, the rooster became sick. A week later it was dead. You draw your own conclusions.

I wasn't advocating their lifestyle either. However I do believe it's possible to grow enough to sustain yourself. This is where technology comes in. Hydroponics and solar tech to maximize yield in a small area with very little work from the owner. At least if you live in the city. What I find amusing though are people in the suburbs that spend hours maintaining lawns with very little utility. It makes me wonder if they spent an equal amount of work towards gardening instead.

@miguelmxdecarvalho Raising meat using this method is way more sustainable than the confinement food In fact, this is the only sustainable way to harvest grass. There is lots of plowing the earth to raise grain crops for your bread. In fact, to build soil without external inputs, you MUST use animals in your practice. Secondly, I know five ex vegetarians for every vegetarian I know. Too many long term health problems. We are hunter gatherers and should eat accordingly.

Well, I grew up on a farm that raised stocker steers from weaning to when they get sent to the feedlot for finishing. I can tell you that the cruelty that you do see are from those who like to post videos of animals that are downers and the folks at the plant that have to deal with these animals to get them to the killing facility. First of all, it's rare to have downers come to slaughter plants, the truckers who have to transport these animals won't even let them on their trucks...

...mostly because they can't even got on anyway. Secondly, downers are put down on farm, without having to put them through more unneeded stress of getting them on the trailer. And downers that do get off the trailer to the feedlot are usually injured on their way to the plant, when the cattle-truck driver doesn't know how many animals to load into each of the compartments on the truck. Folks who raise cattle and/or animals in general take care to make sure they don't have inhumane...

@TheMatt455 Continuing my reply...Every animal that we bring into existence should have the right to live until the end and not to suffer. This is where my vegetarianism is grounded. Of course nature works differently, but I am not a natural being only, I am a being with cultural values also. We shouldn't look only to nature in order to discover what is wrong and what is right to eat. We should examine our concious, are reason very carefully. This is why philosophy exists.

@miguelmxdecarvalho how could they afford to feed their animals and keep their home if they didn't kill the animals? would you prefer their animals to starve and them to live on the streets? Just a question from a proud omnivore and butcher.

...conditions for the animals that live in them. Humans ARE meant to eat meat. They are OMNIVORES, just like the bear or racoon. Our digestive system is designed to handle protein that comes from meat, not strictly herbivorous systems like the horse or cow. We only use a little of the fibre we consume, but we use a lot of protein that goes through. Grass-fed livestock versus the conventional ways of feeding livestock is very interesting in itself. Thanks for posting this video.

That sure is a cute way to raise a very few animals. And is good for a small market. But we could not raise all animals for food like that the cost of meat would sky rocket. it take about ten acres of land to fed a cow a year, so the facts are that no matter how cute it is its ignorant to think that we could raise many animals this way. So its great make your money but the fact is that commercial farms are all that make a difference and all that really matter.

Did you know, that those animals you eat, eat vegetables too. Those farmers grow vegetables and grains for your food to eat. In my opinion, growing food for food is kinda silly, when we could just actually eat the food we grow. Im not saying that eating meat is wrong, but just saying that you cant really blame vegetarians for whatever you were trying to. And for most vegetarians, the "problem" isnt killing animals, but the way they are treated when they are alive.

If you want to feed 6 billion people then the least efficient way to do it is with meat. 70% of the grain in the country goes towards feeding cattle. It also takes 10 lbs of grain to raise a pound of meat. There's a reason why meat was considered a luxury and for years people ate very little of it.
@IluvABbeef

Sure we're running out of farmland, but it's because of expansion of urban areas and cities and people who want to live out in the country with a BIG lawn but don't want to raise livestock or a small plot of crops. It's not all because of raising livestock, which seem to be stuck in your head (which is buried in the sand to say the least)... Feeding animal by-products to livestock is in efforts or is banned. Why? Ever heard of a thing called BSE?
