The 'yodeling chase' may be THE funniest scene ever. From "You sonofabitch!" to "Everything's changed!!!" it is a riot of live-action cartoon violence, comedic editing, Holly Hunter's adorable rage, and Nic Cage running through it all like a criminal Woody Woodpecker "with a panty on his head" 🤣🤣🤣

I think you would really love Fargo. So many great Coen Brothers films, but Fargo is a damn near perfect crime film with that Coen Brothers humor.

Yeah, I agree, although I often put "Valley Girl" as my favorite performance of his. "Wild at Heart" by David Lynch is another, and I loved him in "Pig" from a few years ago. A much more understated performance than usual for him.

When I lived in Nashville for a bit in the 90's I saw him just hanging outside a 7-11 near me and said hi to him, to which he smiled and said 'hi' back. Um, that's the end of that story, I guess.

Okay, so I'm an old fart who saw "Blood Simple" - the Coen's first film - in theaters when it first came out and have been with them ever since. The Coen's style was seen right out of the gate with that film, which is great, and it was also Frances McDormand's first film and where she met Joel, who she's now been married to for decades, and she's been in a lot of their films including one you absolutely have to watch, "Fargo". "Raising Arizona" was the first time that John Goodman appeared in one of their films but he's been in so many since then. The other films (besides the 2 mentioned above) I would say are 'must-see's' are "No Country for Old Men" (my favorite film of all-time); "The Big Lebowski"; "Miller's Crossing", and "Barton Fink". The Coen's started working with Sam Raimi before directing their first film, and Joel was an assistant editor on Raimi's debut feature, "The Evil Dead". That fast tracking shot in this film that runs up to the Arizona house and up the ladder into the bedroom and up to Mrs. Arizona screaming was using the "shakycam" system that Raimi used in "The Evil Dead" which basically involves strapping a camera to a 2x4 and having a guy on each end run with it.

I'm an old fart just like you.Saw Blood Simple without a clue of what I was getting into, and I loved it. I have watched every film they have put out since. I wished more people would watch Blood Simple.

@@johnmaynardable -Yeah, they weren't "The Coen Brothers" yet so we didn't know what to expect and I think there were less than 10 people in the theatre. I was actually hiding behind the seat in front of me during that last scene because I was so tense. While Joel & Ethan recently did separate films on their own, they are back together writing their first horror film which they made reference to the ending of "Blood Simple" as the feel they were going for. Can't wait.

Joel Coen got his start as an editing assistant working on Sam Raimi’s early films (Raimi even has a cameo in the Coen’s ‘Miller’s Crossing’) and a lot of Raimi’s visual techniques and aggressive camera movements are quite present in this film.

The colloquialisms of The American Southwest proper really make this film an endearing classic; "I tell you what", "Well, OK then", "Her insides was a rocky place, where my seed could find no purchase", "Can't you try to keep from forgettin' that?", and so on, etc. Leonard Smalls, a.k.a. The Warthog From Hell, was played by Randall "Tex" Cobb, a martial arts expert and former Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion of The World. He transitioned to Professional Boxing and was a contender for that world championship, too, before becoming a successful character actor.

Nicolette is super-smart and I loved watching her take on this one! Nobody ever reacts to "The Hudsucker Proxy" and it probably wouldn't get you a lot of likes anyway, but it would be fun as the Coen journey goes on.

This is a favourite of mine from the first time I saw it, years ago. Nick cage before he lost the plot. This is pure Coen bros art. It has all of their hallmarks. Always Pure quality entertainment

The Coen bros really can do it all, but sticking with their comedies is a great way to ease into their work. I'd suggest Fargo before Big Lebowski (there is a joke you will only get chronologically😅). Try their other comedies after those two - Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Hail Ceasar!, Burn After Reading, and Intolerable Cruelty are all darkly funny and show the broad range of the brothers talents writing and directing humor. Then the serious stuff...

@@flarrfan I love O Brother. I like those others as well, but I don't really consider them Coen Brothers as they were written by other people. Even O Brother is (loosely) based on Homer's Odyssey. I don't feel any of them are better than Miller's Crossing or Big Lebowski.

If you want to see the Coens really in a masterful moment in time which is easily digestible, may I suggest Millers Crossing. I've never had a movie whip me around with merely it's language. It conjures up a period I really only imagined. It's brutality is softened by its dialogue which is a caricature of reality, yet made absolutely and unbelievably authentic and credible. You are left wanting more.

Two Coen Brothers movies, Raising Arizona and O Brother Where Art Thou? have pomade in them, and they both also have John Goodman. Randall "Tex" Cobb was a boxer as well as an actor. His best-known fight was against Larry Holmes for the world heavyweight championship. Cobb had a great chin, which he needed, because Holmes knocked him all over the ring for 15 rounds. Howard Cosell, who broadcast the fight, was so disgusted that he swore he'd never cover another boxing match. Cobb called this his "gift to the sport of boxing," and said he'd play football for a week if Cosell would stop covering that sport, too. Cobb also said he didn't think Holmes would want to fight him again because "the champion's fists couldn't handle a rematch." When Johnny Carson mentioned during an interview that Holmes had a much longer reach, Cobb replied, "Looked that way to you, too?" More Coen Brothers movies you'd probably enjoy: No Country for Old Men O Brother, Where Art Thou? The Big Lebowski True Grit The Conversation (1974) is a movie I'd love for you to react to. Francis Ford Coppola directed it between the first two Godfather films. Everyone I know who's seen it has loved it, but for some reason there are hardly any reactions to it.

This is a great movie. It scared me at times as a kid with the score with the biker. You should watch and react to Dances With Wolves if you haven’t watched it. Won best picture in 1990 over Godfather 3 and Goodfellas. Masterpiece

@3:11 that in fact is NOT a Woody Woodpecker tattoo. It is the logo for Thrush Mufflers, a kind of "performance" muffler for your car that really didn't increase performance it just sounded louder and meaner. That logo and muffler are way white trashier than Woody Woodpecker! Ha! And now you know! Cheers!

It’s kind of funny that the name really fits the product more than the mascot (which despite the woodpecker resemblance, is supposed to be a roadrunner), as the varied thrush in particular is known for its comparatively flamboyant plumage coloring.

You should definitely check out Millers Crossing and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou. Apparently, Nic Cage didn't have the best experience working with the Coen brothers, which is a real shame. I would have loved to have seen many more movies from that mix of talent.

I'm certain that *Fargo* will be the Coen brothers movie to enjoy the majority of recommendations for viewing next - but I should like to call your attention to the comedy *The Hudsucker Proxy* with Tim Robbins, Paul Newman and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Without divulging anything serious, I can tell you that in looks, dialogue and spirit it belongs in the company of the Frank Capra films of the 30's and 40's, with Robbins as the James Stewart character and Leigh channeling Barbara Stanwyck (and Newman as, I suppose, Edward Arnold). But then, of course, you could just as easily do Capra's _corpus labori_ itself! 😎

Watching Red Letter Media's take on this with Macauley, especially how they shot the car scene almost hitting the baby.... is super interesting. This is where I first noticed Holly Hunter, after which BROADCAST NEWS was a religious experience. Drinking game while watching this film: see a picture of Barry Goldwater, do a shot. Watch for the Coenism of shooting at an animal from a motor vehicle in OH BROTHER and NO COUNTRY. Several other things may be found in other Coen films.
