your videos provide an interesting record of the development of mildew on your bothy wall. I was going back over the library of vlogs and also noticed you changed the side of the barrel you sit on for this year. which is better because I can see the mildew better. Of all the Islay whiskies Caol ila is the one I have neglected. Thank you for reminding me to get some.

Got a Glen Deveron 20 YO as a gift a month ago. Haven't opened it yet. Also got a 12 YO Blended Scotch, Glensurge. Never heard of it before. Its a bottle ex-France, probably a supermarket like Carrefour bottling. Doesn't say so, though. Caol Ila 12 YO is very cheap at Changi Duty-free, Singapore at GBP 34 per litre.

I think caol ila is the most balanced [peat/fruit] dram of Islay malts. Thanks for turning me on to it 7 yrs ago Ralfy!

Lots of Independent Bottlers available in New Zealand. G&McP,Signatory,Adelphi, Hunter Laing, Cadenhead to name a few. We are blessed :)

Definitiv I can sign the comment of Independent bottlings of bowmore are often more lovely as most of the original bottlings😋🥃 👍🏼

Ralfy. Thanks for the recommendation. The next time I am in London I must get an independent bottling of Caol Ila. It sounds wonderful... I must pick you up on something though. I have it on very good authority from more than one source, (one directly from a manager at the distillery when I visited), that the new make spirit is tankered away to the mainland where Diageo then fill it into Refill Ex-Bourbon hogsheads. This is the case for its entire standard range (except those special editions where sherry is stated on the label). There are no Ex-Sherry casks used for the their standard 12/18/25 range at all. The sweetness of the 12 YO is probably from the slow distillation and high quality American oak Hogsheads. You can perhaps prove t your satisfaction that the fruity sweetness you experience from the 12 is coming from the distillation and cask because the same fruitiness is even more pronounced in the 18 YO due to more cask influence obviously. I would guess that the raw sour notes of the G&M are due to it being non-chill filtered?

some of the best bits come after the malt mark. when I first tasted Octomore (comus) I was struck how it didn't taste ridiculously peated, the extra phenols just made the peaty smoke finish last a lot longer.

I like this one neat. I never tasted a better peated Caol Ila. The unpeated 15 was so distinct.

Hi Ralfy, around 13:20 you mention that the whisky was matured in a combination of refill and first fill bourbon casks, however the label (aka the contract ;) ) states that it was matured exclusively in first fill bourbon casks. Just thought I'd add that :)

I've been saying for a while that ex-bourbon casks best suit Caol Ila. Having said though I'm huge fan of G & M's Cask Strength Caol Ila (sherry butts).

Got me in the mood of a Caol Ila now as I opened my 12 the other week. I said I was going to be good till the weekend as I'm weighing myself then; but I'm tempted to have a dram or two now!! :D

I hope you can review Laphroaigs new cask strength batch soon. Quality and price are outstanding IMHO. Age statement, unchillfiltered and great bang for your buck.

The G&M Caol Ila 10yo matured in refill Sherry hogsheads I purchased a bit ago was phenomenal. Curious to compare it to the bourbon matured bottle mentioned here.

Did you fix the leak in the bothy's roof? Was wondering about the rafter construction-could you pan up sometime?

caol ila is the diagio one that has most dissapeared 'up its own' - astronomical prices for this now, whereas lagavulin 16 has remained reasonably priced (ok the 12 year old is also now ridiculous) - who would pay these prices for what is basically a standard 12 year old malt (40 quid as of june 2017) - its all bullshit. Even Talisker is occsioanlly affordable still.
