I had a bottle of Cadenhead Tullibardine 25 at 44% abv. It was an outstanding malt. It tasted like it was around 53% abv tho. I love to speculate about those old bottlings of whisky bottled at 40% or below, but the whisky tasted amazing.. Right now bottles need that high abv to deliver a certain taste, but what if it was possible to deliver all the flavor and punch but at a lower abv... At its own pace, I hope the industry can move in that direction!

I bought the cadenhead's 12 year Authentic at 55.2%. bit of a punt but again great malt. Bought a second bottle. Its Rory recommended and will be on the look out for higher strength variants.

Thank you for your review as usual wonderful job, I feel like everything that distillery makes so far that I try feels like it's made for whiskey beginners, all my friends that are not whiskey drinkers liked they NAS offerings, for me personally they did not offer much except being "pretty and easy to drink". And I agree some whiskeys need to open up for example GlenAllachie 15 after two and a half months what a beauty it was, I really enjoyed it. Once again thank you for all your knowledge.

Love your reviews and extras. Much learned and much to learn. Glad I live to the US. Lots of quality bourbons, rye’s and even some good single malts. High proofs and cask strength whiskeys readily available at reasonable prices. Chill filtration and added color are not usually an issue because bourbons must be matured in new casks. Pretty good whiskey scene here, we even enjoy a decent selection of Scotch. Thanks Ralfy!

Great Xtras video as always Ralfy. You raised some very good points about how distilleries engage with the customers. I'm a huge Bladnoch fan and their management team really engage with their customer base on a level I've not seen with many other distilleries and because of this they are really gathering momentum with their brand since its rebirth. As you quite rightly point out, distilleries that fail to engage with their customers are heading for a tough time

Hi Ralfy, I'm a first time commentator on this site. Just wanted to offer a sincere huge thanks to you for your perspectives on all aspects of Scotch single malt whiskies in particular. It's such a fantastic educational experience and has greatly accelerated my general appreciation and knowledge on the elixir that is Scotland's gift to the world. If I may be bold enough to suggest another related topic/aspect of Scotch whisky which you might consider and give your thoughts on...and that is something I often do when sipping a dram. I warm the poured dram in my Glencairn using the gentle, natural body temperature of my cupped hands that help bring out even more of the Scotch's qualities. I haven't seen this detail mentioned, or heard it mentioned before. Would appreciate any comments and other insights from you Ralfy. Best wishes. Regards, Paul G.

If i buy a 15 year old, i want a package. And this one has a good price, bought it for like 43 Euro, and for me, it is not standard. And enoght brands are just way to expansive for people like me. I would love to try a Springbank 15, but like 130 Euro here, and the Glen Scotia 15 like 44 Euro, so no Springbank for me.

What if you saw it on the shelf - 43 euros with box and 38 euros without? Those things cost US money, not them. Oh, and we pay $80 for Glen Scotia 15 here. All is relative :)

@@alexk3088 That would be cool, give the customer a choice. Than i could keep the box from whiskies i buy more than 1 time, and buy the bottle without the box. Thanks Ralfy, i agree that the Tullibardine standard distillery bottlings don’t do the whiskey full justice - they are definitely unnecessarily clipped and restrained. For those lucky enough to have access to a Cadenheads shop, I urge them to give the “integrity presentation”, cask strength Tullibardines a spin. I personally find them much more remarkable than the distillery bottlings and a great value for the money . . . Which is why the distillery should listen to you advice.

Their core range is not on my radar, but this summer I’ve stumbled upon their The Murray Limited Edition. It’s 11/12 years old, cask strength, unchillfiltered and natural color (the latter is not stated on the bottle or the packaging, but local laws demand importers/producers to state the ingredients). The price was reasonable, so I’ve grabbed it to keep for a rainy day. Doubt I’ll see a better Tullibardine’s bottling on the shelves in the foreseeable future

Ralfy, the the biggest problem with Tullibardine is not the chill filter or the camaramel add. Is the poor quality and 3 use cask that they mature the whisky. That the first and most difficult think that must change. Have a nice day !!

I imagine that most in the industry would sneer at admitting that they watch Ralfy's reviews, much less take advice from him. But just imagine if Tullibardine just took this direct advice verbatim and ran with it. Not only would this create sales, it would create vlogger/blogger buzz and free publicity. Others would have no choice but to follow suit. Suddenly "craft presentation" would be even more mainstream. Those who don't, would become even more irrelevant, dated and stale. Well played.

Old friend (*watcher since episode 2): do you know if yunger whiskys loose some of the metalic youthness after a few months in an oppen bottle? This was my experienc with one Glen Moray peated (probaly 3yo). Nice but super young, then got better, more refined. Did you find similar experiences with other bottles of the sort? Thank you a lot

I'm interested in this, too! I haven't come across many "metallic" youthful malts, mostly because of being selective due to watching these reviews ;) I did go through a bottle of Glen Moray Peated NAS. I thought it was decent - a simpler peated malt to drink when you don't want to deplete your Islays. Presently I have open bottles of Scapa Skiren and Mortlach Rare Old that wouldn't hurt if this happened to them. Time will tell.

The Tullibardine casking policy has interesting consequences because almost every product is matured in first fill bourbon barrels. A variety of ex wine barrels are used for finishing only. What happens to all the ex first use bourbon barrels ? There is no mention of second use. Maybe they take them out to the back yard and burn them. Maybe they are sold to other less scrupulous distilleries. Mysterious.

I never know what to make of this distillery - you describe sweet, but the one indie i had (10yo iirc, Signatory maybe) was almost speyside-tasting citric/banana, fresh, slightly sour, and texturally full in the mouth like Glen Ord. It wasn't amazing, but I appreciated the complexity. A curious distillery - does it have a strong core identity at its best or does it tend to 'customise' its flavour to try to find an audience?

I love the packaging, it is part of the enjoyment for me. And I would never buy a Bottle without any packaging because that would harm the Whisky since it would be exposed to sunlight. 3. I dont want EVERY whisky at 46 % or even higher. I feel very comfortable at 43 %. You seem to believe that more alcohol necessarily means more taste. I think you are wrong. Kind regards M

Oh hypocrisy thy name is ralfy. Wasn't but a few months ago you said "older whiskey oxidize less cause most of the oxidation has occurred in the cask" And nothing says "honest" review like saying you would give a lesser score if it had "40%" regardless of the taste. Foolish.
@alexk3088
@alexk3088 2 жыл бұрын
Inconsistency isn't hypocrisy. As for 40% getting a lower score, experience is reliable enough, I don't see anything dishonest there. There are a few malts that are still great at 40%, despite of it, not because of it. Many things are subjective but higher strength is always better. Everyone can reduce in the glass as they prefer.

@@alexk3088 I definitely don't have a problem with your reply. I've been watching ralfy for more than 8 years. I've watched them all multiple times. I've complimented and critiqued his reviews. That's why we watch. I've been tasting and reviewing whiskey for 23 years and somehow have maintained an open mind on them all. Back when ralfy didn't wear pants on his reviews he did NAS and many 40% expressions. Yet refuses to review NAS now... but owns them and drinks them. Personally I enjoy them and out of 1,067 bottles I have they are a huge part of the experience, perhaps you agree? A person "helping" you on your whiskey journey as he claims shouldn't say even before opening a bottle that it's ABV makes it inferior. Hypocrisy is definitely not a "inconsistency when NAS are owned, consumed, purchased and even enjoyed by a man with a platform and followers. As he's beaten his chest about their lack of "integrity" due NAS or ABV.... but enjoying them himself! That hypocrisy.
@alexk3088
@alexk3088 2 жыл бұрын
@@unclenatedrinkswhisky it is not hypocrisy. Hypocrisy means pretending to be one thing while doing another. He does not tell anyone what to do but it's his prerogative what to review. I've even suggested to him to maybe review NAS without scoring them. Either way, it's his choice, I don't see anything hypocritical about it, even if he owns and enjoys them. His goal is to apply certain "pressure" on the producers to be more transparent, I think it's working, too. Having a "platform" and "followers" does not create "duties". Followers should use their own brain. I don't think Ralfy owes me, or any other viewers, anything. So he can't possibly be hypocritical - he simply isn't telling anyone what to do. 40% ABV makes any bottling inferior - to what that same whisky would've been at higher strength. There's just no way to argue about that.
