About that true Europian oak, the thing is that European oak grows much slower that the American white oak. Here at Serbia and all the other Balkan countries, it takes more than 30 years for it to grow big enough to be used in proper wood industry, and for the barrel making. And whenever out native oak is used for the maturation of the slivovitza for example, you can tell what a magnificent calibar of the wood it is. Slivovitza generally matures far less than whisky, 3-5 years in general, but the quality of the maturation, and the complexity that first fil europian oak gives to this drink is remarkable. I can only imagine those old type of barrels that you are telling us about, it mada a whole world of difference.

A lot depends on location. 30 years is actually pretty fast for any oak. An American white oak can take 100 years to reach a large size, say 70-80 feet high or 25 meters.

Spot-on Ralfy, we live now in time of sweet sugary indulgence and that applies to food as well as our whisky experience. As a beer brewer myself for 50 years, I can appreciate the subtle bitterness that the hop gives to a first-class bitter. Now this experience in recent times has progressed to hops with citrus overtones. The same applies to our whisky. We can experience a overindulgence of the sherry sweet flavour which is fine for our indulgence, but sometimes we do need to open our minds and be slightly more adventurous to the more subtle flavours that exist. Agree with your sentiments regarding marketing and packaging. The overstated hard sell of the product detracts and confuses the true interaction that we expect from our whisky.

Ralfy, Your comment regarding the use of the term "Spanish Oak cask" is spot on! Almost everyone would understand this term to mean oak from Spain but it actually means Casks made in Spain. That's all. You should really assume the cask is made from QA unless they say "European Oak". I learnt man years ago that you have to go deeper and determine the type oak. As I mentioned to you before, a lot of American White Oak is imported into Spain for production of casks but I also pointed out that QA, American White Oak is also grown in Spain and other parts of Europe. Moreover, recently I was speaking to a distillery manager who was telling me that his Spanish Oak casks were made from Oak native to South America!!! An entirely different oak.

Would a ‘butt’ constructed from American Standard Barrel staves (ex-bourbon) technically be a butt, since ASMs are shorter? Might it be a puncheon?
@RebMordechaiReviews
@RebMordechaiReviews 2 жыл бұрын
@@ivanthetolerable I am not aware of any Ex-Bourbon ASBs being exported to Spain. The QA American White Oak is either exported to Spain in planks to be dried and cut to size there, or they will use QA Oak grown in Europe. Regarding sizes, 500 litre Sherry butts are still the standard. A distillery can also order a 500-550 litre Puncheon which is fatter but shorter. Interestingly, 250 litre sherry seasoned Hogsheads are becoming increasingly popular but they are made from new and not like Bourbon hogsheads whoch are usually made from old 200 litre ASBs. There are also the occasional Ex-Bodega sherry butts which are a slightly different shape to the standard sherry butt made to order. These Bodega butts are slightly longer and more cigar shaped. Highly sought after as they contain around 30-40 years of built up grapes on the inside, rather than having simply been seasoned for 2 years which is typical for sherry butts made for the Scottish Whisky Industry.

Oh Ralfy, how I've waited for you to cover this topic! I'm dying to see the extras now. What's sad about the rebrand is how they had it almost right. As a matter of fact I was pondering how the distillery could reach for a bigger audience only a few months before the announcement of the rebranding. My conclusion was that they could add a 12yo to their range - a vatting that would have stayed more or less the same over the years and be the introductory malt of the distillery. Give their younger bourbon-aged whisky a decent sherry finish, some skillful blending and off to the stores with it. Then you would of course keep on with the many editions and batches of all those lovely vintages. As it stands now Balblair is the industry standard of shitting your own legs. I tried their 12yo at a whisky festival and won't be buying any of their bottlings at the exorbitant prices they're asking.

Ralfy, you’re absolutely correct about the “Spanish oak.” Jerez, Rioja and Ribera del Duero have a very long history of using American. I can tell the difference in the oak in French vs American in wines but I’ve not yet made the distinction in whiskies.

I picked up a “travel industry” 17yo bottling on my way through Heathrow (to Sicily) recently. I’m a newcomer to scotch, and found it a challenge for the first few days, having come from the sweet sherry deliciousness of GlenAllachie. However, over the course of the last 2 weeks, with a single dram each evening, I’ve come to really enjoy it. I really appreciate the hint of bitterness, and the slight savoury notes. Really glad I’d watched this review, and decided to give it a try, because it’s really helped me a good step almond my malt journey, so many thanks Ralfy!

Ralfy I understand where you are coming from when you talk about the emotional connection with a whisky brand and how something is lost in your relationship with Balblair that you'll never get back. I feel the same. I viewed them as 'the Highland Springbank' a real character malt. For serious malt fans. Sold at a reasonable price. Made for people like us. It felt with the rebrand like they were telling us they didn't want our support and our custom. They wanted to the money from the far east and the travel markets. Probably a bit melodramatic to say but felt a bit like a betrayal.

Very valid point about bitterness and the ability to appreciate more challenging flavours in whisky. It's sad that the common representations of the two main cask types in Scotch these days (bourbon and sherry) are often simplified to a choice between two different types of sweetness but there are, as you say, still some distilleries brave enough to go further than that. I always loved Balblair too. Especially the younger bourbon expressions and the very old sherried ones. The only expression from the rebranding that I've tried so far is the 12yo. Which I've been enjoying quite a lot, although I did miss the old vintage system. I'm glad to see from this review of the 15yo that it's not all doom and gloom but I look forward to what you have to say about Balblair in your next video. Slainte!

I looked up a bottle of Balblair, the 15 year old, here in Ontario Canada when I am from, Ralfy, to see if I could possibly buy myself a bottle of this stuff. It's sounds like a decent whiskey from your comments. It's about $150 Canadian to buy. And we can only buy spirits through our LCBO, Liquor Control Board of Ontario. I found out that Balblair is currently not available. So 'ain't' going to happen! I agree with your remarks about bitterness. Sugar is a tyrant on the taste buds! If you want to appreciate flavours and nuance, sugar needs to be scarce. GD

Balblair was once my favorite. I’d drink anything they put out. It’s tough to find in the Chicago area. I’ve got some wonderful memories around that wonderful spirit. It’s used to be age stated and vintages. It was special. That much said, the last bottle I did find was of this new bottling style and I was disappointed. Headed to Scotland in May of 22 and we had planned to visit Balblair but I’ve begun to rethink it. Wondering if I just got a bad batch. IDK.

I just finished a bottle of the 15, bought at discount, which made it more price-comparable to the pre-rebrand line. Honestly, I thought it was fine, but the typical Balblair fruity character was rather swamped by the cask influence. Like you, I’m no fan of the very generic rebrand, but I honestly wouldn’t complain had the whisky not lost so much of what made it distinctive (and also had they not gone batshit with some of the pricing).

I just tried this at the tail end of my Scotland trip in Edinburgh after a week of tastings in the Highlands. It was hiding on the shelf at the hotel bar next to your typical big distillery offerings. I thought hmm let’s give it a try. REALLY nice whisky especially considering I’d just done an older Glengoyne special tasting that morning…If this represents a slightly downgraded version I most definitely want to try some independent bottler cask strength versions! I’ll be looking to add this to my rotation back in the US as it is quite reasonably price there….

Hi Ralfy. I think I know where you are going with this. Since Balblair dropped their vintage labelling and replaced it with the new design and price hike I have not revisited the brand. The 00 vintage bottled in 2017 at under £60 was one of my favourites. It has gone, which happens...but if they were to ever replace it with a 17 year old bottling I know it will be priced a lot higher (above inflation). Based on this review it looks like they have not compromised on quality but the whole rebrand and price hike still leaves me with a bitter taste....and not in the positive sense. Look forward to your extra on this one. Cheers

@@alehhandro1 I agree with your comments about marketing in general but this situation is even worse than your logic of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!". Even if you think that your brand needs a revamp, the objectives of any marketing project for a whisky brand should be to stand out from the rest of the crowd of bottles sitting on the shelf. Something that catches the eye, makes the punter notice you and pursueds someone to pick it up. Once picked up you need details which will make the customer take it to the counter. Now the old brandings of all these distilleries had all this in abundance. The new brandings however, look totally bland and generic with similar font styles and sizes, and boring label design, as if they had been designed for a supermarket whisky label. That's what I mean by train wreck.

@@RebMordechaiReviews couldn't agree more with you. Balblair is a character malt. One for aficionados and not one for casual whisky drinkers. With their old vintages range they had a unique selling point. Something that made Balblair stand out from the crowd. It would have been confusing to casual whisky drinkers but as I said above casual whisky drinkers aren't buying Balblair. With the rebrand they have alienated their core fan base and lost their unique selling point and it's not like it's suddenly flying off the shelves into the shopping bags of casual whisky drinkers. Absolutely stupid decision by Inverhouse. They learned nothing from the botched rebrand of Old Pulteney.

It’s clear to me that most distillers today and the corporations that now own them could give a monkeys about the quality they provide to a drinker in comparison with what they can provide to potential investors. They create a product to woo the drinkers who in turn big up the brand then along come the money bags to break up the party. It happened with music over a period of time. It’s happened with professional sports. £500+ for a 25 year old whisky that in its previous incarnation was half that. Drinkers are a stepping stone nothing more. Jog on Balblair.

I felt a bit nauseated when i saw the new packaging it is bland and dull. Where is the bautyful picture of the box that got us ready for the experience. Good thing you threw the boxes aside so that does not reflect negativity on your review or did it? I feel that sometimes we need to take emotion towards packaging out of the equation before we evaluate the whisky! But then what what is the point? Whisky and emotional experience go hand in hand. Ralphy, how came we can have a sherried whisky like Edradour, Glenfarclas and others which are rich in red fruits (mostly PX and Oloroso) and then you have also sherried whisky like Glengoyne and other which are more on the dried fruits (I believe its called American sherry oak)? I cannot understand the wood difference here and I think this would offer a great topic for an extras. Cheers!

The Bourbons with apple flavour are actually called flavoured bourbons. So they are not actually bourbon whisky! Cheers

Great review. I had the feeling, that you incorparate intentionally some basic beginners Informations in there. The last few review were fester and less in detail and more about background in the industry. btw did you heared about te changes in the rules for Irish whiskey, that the Irish Whiskey Association recently recommanded?

For clarity about Bourbon, you cannot add anything to your Bourbon in the USA, not even E150a. (cough cough SWA.) These "flavored bourbons" are, legally, exactly that - "flavored bourbons" as opposed to flavored "bourbons," if you follow. For a specific example, Angel's Envy is not "Bourbon" finished in ex port wine casks, it's "Bourbon finished in ex port wine casks" as far as the TTB is concerned.

Ralfy, will the distillery ever tell you on the label what sort of cask the whisky was made in, and if, say, it was made in a sherry cask, is it possible to find out how many times the cask has been used for whisky subsequent to its initial use for the sherry?

I would simply guess that the term "Spanish Oak" is deliberately chosen so as to be legally nonbinding, and therefore should be assumed to be American Oak.

Hi ralfy. Would be great if you could make a video explaining exactly why you don't review NAS whiskies. I've had tonnes of great ones and I know you agree (Uigeadail, kilchoman, longrow, etc), so I would like understand why you think an age statement is important, regardless of the quality of product. Slange!

Just one integrity comment - Flavored American whiskies are not Bourbon. Technically, even finished Bourbons are no longer Bourbon but they seem to let these slide by allowing Bourbon on the label. But flavored American whiskies ARE NEVER LABELED BOURBON. We do have a little integrity.
