After watching this video, I wanted to get a bottle as I've enjoyed lesser Ledaigs in the past. Searched for it on line and the price varied from $120 to $200 here in the states. Then I spotted an online purveyer located in southern California who had 4 bottles and was asking $61 a bottle. I bought 3. They just arrived in their fancy wooden presentation boxes. Even a blind hog finds an acorn sometimes. 😉

Thanks to Ralfy: Ledaig (Tobermorry Distillery) may become the next Springbank. For those of us who have learned from Ralfy over the years can remember a time when he evangelized about this tiny “Grand Cru” distillery in Cambeltown being the finest Scotland. He taught us about their integrity bottling & cask policy, their old-school (no-shortcuts) production methodology and how this distillery gives back more to their local community. Well malt-mates it seems like Ledaig (Tobermorry Distillery) with its consistently high scores (being the envy of Islay) could perhaps join Springbank as the next “Grand Cru” distillery in Scotland. Stock-up malt mates before prices 🚀🌙

The Ledaig 10 has been really great lately. Lots of that “twiggy” peat, with a rich graininess and a good sweetness to round it out. I might have to check out the 18 before it becomes unavailable or too outrageously priced

I have to say Tobermory Distillery is one of if not my favorites. They are small and their attention to crafting outstanding Scotch Whiskey is commendable! I hope they keep what they are doing and not change! Ledaig 10 year is outstanding and I May have to treat myself to an 18 year or 19 Year Ledaig! RALFY, I received your Book today from Amazon, looking forward to reading it! Peace from America in the state of Ohio!👍🥃✌️

I would love to get my hands on a bottle of Tobermory. I live in a control state, and while they sell Ledaig (albeit a special order,) for some odd reason they don't sell Tobermory at all, special order or otherwise. Same distillery. Strange.

I think I took a small baby step in my little journey recently, but it was a bit backward. Was eating a banana the other day, it was pretty ripe (not rotten), and when I peeled it and went to take a bite, and I picked up a quick scent of the bourbon I had been drinking the day or two before. Went to the bottle, read the back. And there it was, said there was a hint of banana. So apparently, somehow, I didn't pick up banana when I was drinking the bourbon, but I picked up some component of my bourbon when I was eating the banana. Weird.

Now you have to go back and have another bourbon and see of you can pick up the banana this time. You might since it's already in your head but that's a good way of picking up notes in a dram. You can do that with herbs as well

A recent bottle of the 10 y/o didn't last very long here, being just so drinkable it was gone in just over a month. As for the 18 y/o I eaked out a bottle of batch 3 (came in the wood box) over a year gradually enjoying it more as time went on...initially on opening I mostly got a sort of burnt 1970's rubber sensation on the nose that put me in mind of those Soviet era gas masks seen in cold war era documentaries, I eventually learnt to love it though as it faded slightly over time.

I once met an old man who would, on his birthday, treat himself to an old single malt, 18yr up to about 24yr old and he always drank a glass of water before pouring the dram. He said he liked to clense the pallet to enhance the taste. Just wondering ralphy, do you have any rituals when it comes to the older, more expensive whiskys. I seem to remember you saying something about charging the pallet with a cheaper whisky? Fantastic video really enjoyed this one, cheers

I had the pleasure of participating in a tasting at the Tobermory Distillery in early May (unfortunately they weren't doing tours yet). I got to try the Tobermory 10, Tobermory 12 Cask Strength, Tobermory 17 year with a Madeira finish, Ledaig 10, and Ledaig 18. All great whiskies! Our guide said none of their whiskies are chill filtered or contain artificial coloring, but I agree it would much more useful to have it on the bottle.

Thank you Ralfy, enlightening as always, really enjoying the Ledaig 10, look forward to trying the 18 as circumstance may permit. Love the long development of the 10, pour, wait, 1st taste, 2mls water, more time - I end up sitting with one pour for an hour exploring the nose, and sipping quietly. Patience is underrated with fine whisky.

A decade ago I found a 13yo Ledaig in a little liquor store in San Francisco more popular for tequila. Quite a bit of dust on the label and I could never find much online information, but that bottle tasted amazing. I was quite new to peated whisky, but it had just the right amount to indoctrinate me. I wish Ledaig was more available in the states. Fantastic whisky.

When you say 'who listens to the online community' I think you are correct, there is a very arrogant and uneducated attitude amongst the marketing companies and advisors of these producers, they seem to have a contempt for their customers and belittle opinions offered, which is very strange when you think about it: this is a massively important source of marketing intelligence, they could learn so much about the people who drink their products if they would only wake up and acknowledge the people.

Tried the 18 at my inlaw's just the other weekend and it's a thing of beauty... had to order one today after digging an absolute steal of a deal (for Brazil standards which are rather pricey).

I love this like I love the 10y/o, but they are very different beasts. The 10 has become my current go-to sipping whisky, whereas the 18 y/o (which is, word of warning, a bit of a marmite whisky) is a super-rich, digestif / dessert whisky.

Great review and I will keep my eye out for this one in Canada, although I doubt if I will ever see it here. I started seriously hunting different bottles of whisky 6 years ago here in Ottawa. About 3 years ago, I saw a bottle of Ledaig 10 on the shelf and snatched it up, as I had never seen it during the previous 3 years before that. I tried it finally last summer and was floored by how good it was! I liked it better than many of the Islay bottles I have (but not all of them! lol), and the price point was much cheaper than the bottles from Islay. Needless to say I saw a few bottles of Ledaig 10 again a few months ago, first time seeing them in another 3 years, so even though I still have most of my first bottle, I grabbed 2 as I know I like it very much, and I dont know how long it will be before I see it again...if ever....or if it will be as good several years from now. its nice finding a bottle you like, especially when you dont see it every year! thanks for the heads up on the 18...now the hunt is on again!

Hi Ralfy, great review as always. I recently finished a bottle of a PX finished Ledaig from Douglas Laing which I very much enjoyed so I might look for the 18 as a replacement... If you are interested to know if a bottle contains artificial colour, I found it helpful to go to german webstores and look if it says so there. German Law takes those additions a bit more seriously as far as I know so they need to be declared. From what I could find it does not mention anything about E150 for this bottle but obviously we'll never know for sure...

Not only scotch whiskey landscape changing but also bourbon or American whiskey landscapes changing too, some prices on some bottles are ridiculous they just not worth buying .I got my 18-year-old month ago looking forward trying it, bigger distilleries assume that people just going to buy their product regardless of quality because of a name and some what they are right, most of people will and they banking on it. At this point in my life I'm on discovery mode I want to have pure liquid I want to have something different not only in the scotch but also bourbon cognac armaniac and any other fine spirit. It is a journey to discover something new something refreshing and something different it might not suit every palette but that's the whole point, like they say try it you might like it. As always thank you for your knowledge

I literally hardly buy bourbon anymore and I’m in the US. The price they ask for such low age statements turns me off. If I’m going to spend $75, I will take a 14-16 year scotch over an 8 year bourbon any day.

I've had my eye on Ledaig 18 for quite some time but it is damn expensive in Bulgaria. I have to part with the equivalent of roughly 101 pounds by current exchange rates to buy a bottle. In fact almost anything from Distell is overpiced in Bulgaria. I love the 10 yo and based on the very flattering feedback I still I may get a bottle of Ledaig 18 anyway, but buying more than one bottle - highly unlikely :) I've also been eyeing a bottle of G&M Connoisseur's Choice Ledaig Vintage 2000, bottled in 2015, 46%, NCF, NC. ~55 pounds. Looks like a decent offer to me. Cheers!

Don’t you think it’s just a matter of time before a peated whiskeys get hit with a carbon tax? Then you’ll have to offset your carbon footprint by buying carbon credits. Or bourbon credits.

There are a number of very characterful malts that were once considered grocery store malts or blend fodder. Some of these malts were held back in that budget category because of a low proof presentation, and Tobermory/Ledaig do fit that description. But another thing hounded the reputation of Tobermory/Ledaig: a self-impressed yearly ratings book. These books are almost completely comprised of undated, out-of-date reviews. So a novice looks up Tobermory 10 & sees a mark of 67.5 at the top for the old 40% presentation and then the next entry a mark of 73.5 for a 46.3% release followed by one or more recent scores. None of these scores are dated, and unless the novice understands that what is available on the shelves is much newer than any of these reviews, they are immediately put off. The case of Ledaig 10, included in the Tobermory section of this ‘authoritative’ book, is even more off-putting. Here a more recent, but still undated & old review is listed, the same appraisal as the third review of Tobermory, and almost the same mark, but with more daunting verbiage: “cough sweet” (drop in the US), “slight hiccup on the technical front”. The novice then reads the review for the older, lower alcohol release, and then passes over Ledaig for years: mark of 63, “What the hell is going on? Butiric and peat in a ghoulish harmony on nose and pallet that is not for the squeamish.” This isn’t even a snarky NYT restaurant review. This is a Yelp stink bomb. In my case, I located a miniature bottle of logic 10, and found no objectionable flavors at all. By then, Ledaig was distributed by a different supplier, so I ended up having to go out of town to purchase it. One need only investigate the author’s fetish for over-appraising anemic Glenn Grant 18 to gain perspective on his ‘bible’.

Ralfy, do you intend to make a video regarding the decision by Diageo to reduce, or cease completely, the supply of peated malt to non-Diageo Islay distilleries and the implications of such a decision? Many thanks

Ledaig 18 batch 3 (90 point) has been my long time beloved peated dram, I am curious if batch 3 vs current ledaig 18(no batch ), which one will stand out? Thanks again for your excellent review!

I see that pure malt lurking in the background. Future review or extras on that?

When I saw the bottle of Ledaig 18, I thought for a moment .. uuhhh Ralfy will be rough with this, one of my favorites, but by min. 2 I was already calmer. Jajaa. Thanks Ralfy, I will keep fully enjoying my bottle. Looking forward for the next Extras Cheers.

Great video Ralfy. Thank you for your expertise. I have one issue, i am in my 3rd year of whisky journey and i am still not into Peaty whiskies even though i have tried a lot of them. I don't dislike them but i just cannot have more than 1 dram of peaty whisky in a day. Can it be because I'm not a smoker. I actually hate cigarettes. I am crazy about Sherry and tropical fruit notes in whiskies.

Try Ardbeg An Oa. Read about how they get there. Peat levels can be masked by other things ;)
