Want to make your GT more like a Darkhorse - This is how. This is an easy, but tedious modification that can be made to reduce AIT's on a competition level vehicle.

If you’re worried about the extra dirt and stuff getting to the filters get the K&N pre filter for a cone shape pod they work awesome

Great video! love the data and everything, you also made a great point about the filters getting dirtier faster, but I feel like you can get a pair of pre filters mesh's that won't decrease performance too much but still keeps the longevity of the engine and intake systems. Will definitely do this with my s550 since it is exactly the same on my intake grill too.

I have a 2024 California Special, and the grill is unique for the package. It is wide open to the air filters. There is basically no restriction.

A video (few seconds) or a photo Before the modification would help a lot for the temperature comparison with the After. The air filter box must have a drain hole so don't worry, rain won't pass the gauze filter and won't end up inside your intake manifold.

Good call. I looked at my 2021 GT and noticed the deliberate restriction on the Ram-Air side. I'll likely use an exacto knife to do mine👍🏽

The plastic is thick and glass fiber reinforced, at least on the S650 - it will be very difficult with a blade. For sure have spares.

Been thinking about doing this for a long time. I live in the desert so, summer temps get hot and IAT’s go way up. Usually at least 20-30 degrees above ambient at stops during summer. And IAT is never less than 10 above while driving even in winter. Good video.

@@MurphysLawGarageJust wanted to follow up. Have you had any issues with check engine light, car surging at highway speeds or throwing any codes? My car is a ‘15 GT so, only one inlet side to open up but, it also has the stock closed air box. Also wanted to know if you’re running any tune?

@liquidsmokemustang1537 you shouldn’t do this to a 15-18 car because they are MAF dependent - it upsets the sensor because the air is too turbulent.

@@MurphysLawGarage Yeah, I know it can cause issues. Although, I have talked to a few drivers of 15-19 GT’s that have installed RTR grilles or done grill deletes that have not had problems (unless they lied and just want to spread the pain lol). I think the closed air box is where turbulence could be an issue. I would not open it completely, just take out one or two blocked ports. I’m in CA for now so, keeping it CARB legal until I move to TN.

I cut the whole corner out of my 2019 gt when I noticed most of the holes were solid. My car has a jlt cold air intake which I made a plexiglass lid for then cut the grill out. My iat’s stay way lower while driving and even when sitting for a while the iat’s drop way quicker now. I did all the testing in the same day within an hour apart. And honestly the iat’s were lower with the stock air box than with the jlt. But not much cooler and that was the reason I added the plexiglass cover for it. I also cut out the fake heat extractor vents on the factory 19 gt hood which also ended up making the iat’s drop even farther. I live in the south so every little bit helps.

AFE has special air filters for race day (drag) and track day filters that are designed specifically for this purpose and I think you should try them out it isn’t meant for daily driving but to swap out because you can see that the filter media is very wide open and extremely thin

Don't they make a complete grill insert for those corners - where you cut out the whole thing and insert new open grill ...? Or small hole saw just big enough to fit in between the top and bottom of the vent holes w/o touching the top or bottom - just a thought, still get the extra air without having to be as careful - not sure how the round hole would look though ...🤷‍♂ and BTW you did a great job I can't really see the cutting almost looks factory

No, but you can get an entire RTR grill - it has the openings.

@@MurphysLawGarage I put the larger opening RTR hood vent on - I'm wondering if this mod and that - will help even more for ridding hot air. It's a shame we don't have a way to rid hot air out of peoples mouths - 🤣🤣🤣

How do you like the steeda drag springs. Drivability still okay when cruising town and on the highway? I have a 19 gt pp1 10 speed with almost ever mod 18 steeda's silver bullet has minus the torque converter, carbon fiber drive shift and no tune. I current have the progressive springs with their adjustable struts. I was thinking of switching springs to the drag spring. I do alot of highway driving so has me a little hesitant. Also, do you have to have a tune to run the E85 mix you're running?

The steeda drag springs ride slightly stiffer than stock, but are otherwise identical. No, S650’s cant be tuned.

@user-bk5ey9ws5g yes, it ensures consistently high octane and more heat/knock prevention so the car doesn’t pull timing on hot laps. 2gal is street use - on the track I’m at 3-5gal depending on temps.

What is your opinion of the lower ducts? Shelby unblocks them and exhausts into the wheel wells.

You must install ducts, there are unprotected electrical connections there that can’t deal with pressurized water, but yes it would cool the brakes.

Your dragy time how did u run it? What drive mode, tc on or off. I did try once but I got 11.2s wanna get into the 10s

Drag mode, TC on, make sure the car is already hot - it like the second lass better than the first, and rollin in from a dig or 1st gear run up. It doesnt like to jump from just below 60.

@fatimajawo484 I have, in 85*F heat it was 2-3 tenths faster with E85. The hotter/wetter it is the more the E helps. The difference is hard to measure when its cold/dry.

Only true test of this is a dyno plus I would worry it would void your warranty if you have engine trouble. I would be careful if your car is under warranty.

I have data logs of IAT recovery and no it doesn’t void the warranty. The car has a whipple now.

You keep saying the Dark Horse is a dedicated track car, vs the GT with Performance Package, and I dont know where you are getting this information. The only thing the DH has over the GT on the performance package regarding anything that would be race related is a oil cooler, and a rear end cooler. and a 2 piece vs a 1 piece front rotor. Other than that they are the same car part for part minus internal rods and special crank whatever that is. The DH is meant to take the track due to the oil and rear end cooler, but other than that its a street car. and all these changes you made with the carbon filter and cutting out the grill didnt buy you anything. Especially once you installed the whipple. MY GT intake temp maintains right at outside air all the time. You also cut the amount of pressure that was there by opening the hole reducing the amount of air going to the filter.

The 24s rely mostly on speed density/MAP unlike the MAF dependent previous gen + air hits the air filter at a 90* angle and must turn so even if it did matter it wouldn’t be turbulent by the time it reached the MAF. This shouldn’t be done on a S550.

You’d be negating the benefit of the ram air intake while also sucking up hot air - no go.

It will blow up into the airbox where you can remove it around the filter when you drive it.

@@MurphysLawGarage I also scuffed up areas around the bumper..I thought I had a steady hand but this was the first time I have ever done something like this. I ordered some gloss black touch up paint..hopefully it will not make it noticeable.
