The song is attributed to Leadbelly from back in the 1930's. Black Betty is most likely an object and not a person. I've heard a gun, a bottle of whiskey, a prison transport and others.

Ram Jam released two albums. They were quite different. Number two Portrait of the Artist As Young Ram had guitarist Jimmy Santoro on the album and it had a harder edge and style. The title was inspired of James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man

They say that this songs origins date all of the way back to pre revolutionary war days IN ENGLAND, as a drinking song in English pubs. IT'S NOT ABOUT A PERSON. The English soldiers apparently were singing about a rifle, that they called "Black Betty" when they "rewrote" the lyrics, while here, in "the colonies". There was, apparently dozens of iterations, down through the years. More current information seems to indicate that the first recording was by James "Iron Head" Baker in 1933, not Huddy "Lead Belly" Leadbetter.

Black Betty refers to a musket called the "black betty" and it is not about a black lady. It is reported to have been once used as marching cadence song. There is a big controversy though about what war and what county it originated from. There is some evidence however that it might have originated during the US revolutionary war and is of British origin. However in reality, its true origin is most likely long lost to history. In any event, like I said, Black Betty does not refer to black lady. To further cloud the real meaning, some additional lyrics have been added through the years to make it sort of seem like it is about a black lady

Why don't you cover Leadbelly's version ( 1939) ? Will never happen because not on the radar of the majority. No Africsn Anerican artsts front 70's or prior( aside from Hendrix ) on this channel.

You should at least try to react to the video along with the song if people are going to pay you $125. All the other people on KZfaq that react to songs posted the original video when they did it. You guys really missed the boat on this one. If KZfaq was to ever take the video down then just edit yourselves in the lyrics video with your reaction, but at least try the original videos first.
