Rameau est l’ambassadeur de l’harmonie moderne. Il est l’un des plus grands théoriciens de la musique de tous les temps. Rameau montra que certains accords sont des renversements d’autres accords. Il prouva, par exemple, que l’accord parfait n’est qu’une combinaison des harmoniques de la note fondamentale et il conclut que, quand les notes de l’accord parfait sont disposées de façon différente, le nouvel accord ne constitue qu’un renversement de l’accord parfait primitif.
Cependant, lorsqu’il fit de l’accord parfait, par l’addition des tierces supérieures et inférieures, l’élément central de l’harmonie, il se créa des problèmes qui ne pouvaient être résolus qu’en abandonnant complètement le principe de la tonalité..
Rameau estimait que toute pensée ou tout sentiment pouvaient être fidèlement exprimés par la musique et, que chaque son et chaque harmonie avaient leur ‘caractère’ bien déterminé. Son habilité caractéristique et son imagination, qui n’est jamais en défaut, en font le maître absolu du XVIIIe siècle.
En respectant scrupuleusement la forme, il composa des menuets, des gavottes, des rigaudons, des bourrées et des marches empreintes d’une délicatesse extraordinaire, renforcée par des harmonies riches et audacieuses. Jean-Aubry écrit : ‘’Rameau, c’est l’intelligence avisée qui s’applique à connaître le coeur humain et les moyens dont il dispose pour s’exprimer.’’
Le clavecin du château d'Assas. Instrument de style français du milieu du 18e siècle. Les deux claviers sont plaqués en ébène, les feintes en os, les devants des touches décorés d'arcades. L'accouplement des claviers se fait tiroir. Les registres, au nombre de quatre sont actionnés des manettes à l'intérieur de la caisse. Ce sont, au premier clavier : huit pieds - quatre pieds, au second clavier : huit pieds doux, un registre de luth.
L'étendue de ce clavecin à grand ravalement est de et une notes de fa à fa. La mécanique est ancienne, claviers, sautereaux, chevilles plates non percées. L'accord est fait un demi ton en dessous du diapason moderne. Ce clavecin, dont l'origine est assez mystérieuse a été acquis par Mme Simone Demangel qui l'installa au château d'Assas où il continue à vivre dans son merveilleux décor.

Portrait Notre résidence était devenue pour Scott un peu son point de chute et fréquemment son refuge à Québec. Il y trouvait des chats, des orchidées, un petit atelier de facture, un instrument pour son appartement, le partage d’enthousiasmes géologiques et mycologiques, un lieu où tester l’audace de certaines opinions, mijoter quelques bons plats, s’acharner sur le micro-ordinateur et, à d’autres moments, ne rien dire et… ne rien faire. Scott était discret et d’une grande simplicité. Rarement il insistait pour emporter une décision ou faire valoir un point de vue. Il préférait s’éloigner plutôt que d’affronter la controverse ou les indésirables. Il savait reconnaître à distance et avait en horreur parade et snobisme. Peu enclin à s’imposer et à bouleverser les choses ou les gens, il était d’une grande tolérance. Il protégeait sa vie privée. Il savait exprimer et, si nécessaire, imposer ses exigences professionnelles. Il pouvait se montrer d’une grande générosité.

I first bumped into Rameau by accident at the Portland Public Library ca. 1980 while a piano student. In those days you could grab a vinyl off the rack and have the librarian play it for you on the turntable behind the counter. I guess they didn't trust us back then to properly work a turntable without scratching the disk. Well, after I asked to have the Gavotte and six variations repeated 10 times, she got a little annoyed! In any case, I ended up learning to play many of Rameau's harpsichord works and has been a lifelong love of mine. I don't remember who's recording I had listened to way back then... ...enter D. Scarlatti and Scott Ross's recordings of that entire harpsichord work. The match is made in heaven! Thank the gods for YT and no more bothering the librarian...

J'ai eu le privilège d'entendre Scott Ross en concert. Autant dire que je me fais un peu vieux... Je veux dire que cette musique était une absolue découverte, autant que l'explosion du rock par exemple. Avant, Rameau c'était un tambourin ou petit menuet appris aux enfants au piano. Et le clavecin était un instrument bizarre et assez désagréable, aux cordes... en métal, pour des expériences bizarres. Rameau, comme en son temps finalement, était redevenu pour les musicologues un théoricien vénérable. Merci le temps, le travail et la sensibilité des "baroqueux" qui nous comblent d'une résurrection. Donc, tout n'est pas mauvais par ces temps.

Rameau is truly underrated, many of his compositions ( la poule, les cyclopes etc...) have that unique style you can only find in French works form that era.

Rameau, Biber, Zelenka, Heinichen, etc. are underrated because you cant see that forest for the Big tree (Bach).

@@ruperttmls7985 I believe that Rameau belongs to his own tree. Bach and Rameau composed in very different styles, and both of their styles are pleasant to listen to. There were people much more popular than Bach, even in Bach's day.

Merveilleuses sonorités tissées par le Rameau "explorateur". Jamais meilleur que face à son instrument de prédilection, il semble toujours vouloir élargir le spectre sonore, "pousser les murs", étouffant sur un clavecin à jamais trop exigu pour son immense pouvoir de compositeur, tentant de repousser les limites de sa "boîte à musique", et de la gamme elle-même, carcans insupportables pour un tel cerveau, espèce d'oiseau fabuleux coincé dans une cage trop petite. S'il est une gloire nationale à chérir, c'est bien notre adoré Dijonnais. Scott Ross sûrement son très lointain parent, sera bien le seul à m'ouvrir les oreilles à ces sons crus et stridents. Je les aime tous les deux.

I remember a recital by Scott Ross in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, in July 1981. Half a recital would be more accurate for I fell asleep in the middle of it. I was young and just out of a three-month gruelling period. After all, les Variations were composed for an insomniac. Am I pardoned? But what I will never forgive myself is, while living less than 6 kilometers from Assas, and knowing of him ( I had these complete Rameau recordings on LP), not even having tried to meet him or see him rehearsing...silly youth...

Don't feel bad. A lot of people (who should know better) have never even heard of Scott Ross. One reason for that is because of Ross himself. He was not a self-promoter and didn't seek the limelight. When he was in France he lived alone in a small rustic house in the countryside, with only his beloved cats for company. If he had chosen the piano as his primary instrument no doubt he would have been world famous (and rich), but thankfully for us he chose "the road less travelled."

Après écoute, je comprends pourquoi tout le monde le loue. Je ne savais pas qu'on pouvait atteindre de telles nuances au clavecin. J'ai l'insigne chance d'avoir trouvé cette intégrale en 33t version audiophile la semaine dernière.

@@ER-rl8ts ah ah ah ce n'est pas la saison du père Noël mais ça m'a fait tellement plaisir.!Je suis une inconditionnelle de Scott et de Rameau.L'oeuvre pour clavier de Rameau je l'ai découverte il y a longtemps dans la version pour piano de Marcelle Meyer enregistrée en 1948 ! Absolument stupéfiante mais je préfère quand même le clavecin de Scott Ross.

I always had the idea of Rameau being a bit boring. Should have listened to this recording earlier. Scott Ross brings out the Rock´n´Roll in baroque music. So beautiful!

Love it! Listen also to Vikingur Olafssen on piano. He is a great Rameau interpreter. But this is really a strong argument for the harpsichord. I usually get bored very quickly, even by Landowska. Bravo for Scott Ross on this archaic instrument.

Very nice. I own Ross' Scarlatti and Bach collections. Might have to get this one, too. He played with such command. I feel like I'm in the hands of a well-trained pilot or driver when I listen to him.

@@stijnzimny5097 Scott publicly stated that he did not believe in "Interpretation" (as that term is commonly understood) or, as one music critic once put it, "The vanity of virtuosity." He preferred to let the music speak for itself. Tell me - how does one "interpret" the work of a genius? What could one possibly add that would make that work better?

It was generally known that he was suffering from AIDS-related pneumonia. Watch the one hour documentary about him (on KZfaq). Although he knew that he was dying Scott kept on doing what he loved most (playing Baroque music on the harpsichord) until the end. In his final days, however, he looked much older than his 38 years. For many of us, he is sorely missed.

Wunderschöne Interpretation dieser fein komponierten Meisterstücke im lyrischen Tempo mit schimmerndem doch gut artikuliertem Klang des Cembalos sowie mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Echt genialer Cembalist! Und Rameau ist eine Art französischer Bach. Er soll viel häufiger angehört und viel höher geschätzt werden!

Ich liebe diese Vortragsweise zumal hier vier Dinge zusammenfinden : Einige wundervolle Melodien des Rameau, ein sehr klangvolles Instrument, dass beinahe in Vergessenheit geraten war, ein geradezu göttlicher Interpret, und ein vorzügliches Aufnahmestudio, dass diesen glücklichen Vortrag in guter Klangqualität für uns Amateure dokumentierte.

he was a US citizen, born in Pittsburgh, raised (as regards music) mostly in France. He was a professor in Québec though.

I'm intrigued: the repetitions of the phrases are always softer. How does he achieve it? Does he use a damper pedal or another keyboard?

You are a good listener to perceive the dynamic variation. It is created by shifting from one keyboard to the other. The "louder" sound is played on the keyboard that couples two sets of strings tuned in unison, so depressing a key plucks two strings simultaneously. The "softer" sound comes from the other keyboard, which is plucking just one string per keystroke. The keyboards and strings can be manually coupled and uncoupled in different combinations to create diverse sonorities.

@@daveydoodle52So this lovely effect of using two keyboards can only be accomplished in a studio recording, can't it? I mean, in a live concert he would not have time to switch from one keyboard to the other, would he? In any case, apart from his gift as an amazing interpreter, Ross knew how to choose his instruments. They all had a superb sound.

@@drgustavbakter4735 The harpsichord was played in a chamber setting, such as a drawing room or the King's court. If you go to a harpsichord recital today where microphones are not used you can't really hear the music unless you are in the first few rows.
