I think he’s always been confident he just hasn’t expressed it to this degree before ... but going back and watching interviews even just a year back, there’s a clear difference in how he presents himself. I understand what Spiderous is saying. Rami Malek has quirky body language. And a sort of offbeat cadence in the way he speaks. Both those qualities are usually associated with awkward social interaction, but that isn't the case in his situation.

It's not that dark for someone who's suffering from a multiple personality disorder. Mr. Robot doesn't encourage him to kill himself. In one episode he actually tried to get him to throw up the large dose of pills. He's even leaving clues to help him understand what's happening. The dark part is the psychotic break that Angela has. Seriously, she asked if the people who died are going to be okay. She thinks rewinding a tape puts a building back together.
