Ive had my bow to the shop twice. I dont have a press or I would have worked on it myself. Anyway I took it in and asked them to look at it and that i suspected the top cam was out of time. He looks at me and tells me that these bows just dont go out of time too much. I asked him to humor me and give it a look. (he has a hooter shooter) About a week later he said it was done and sure enough the top cam was out of time. Huh?? I take it back home and a few days later attempt to work through some hand loading. Every combination of field point 200-300 on a 250 and 300 shaft had a hard left tear. I messed with the rest a bit but the adjustment would require the center shot to be way out of line so I started looking into it. I learned about the top-hats being adjustable on my Triax. I took it back to the same shop and asked them to take a look. Again they looked at me like i was an alien and again i asked them to humor me. This time I left a couple 300 spine bareshafts and 200 grain field points (I didnt want him tuning it with one of the twizzlers and telling me it was fine) and asked them to paper tune that setup the best they could. They argued why that wasnt a good idea and why it wouldnt fly. They said when I fletched the arrows they would fly diff. and why was I trying to shoot such heavy arrows. Why didnt I just take a 400 FMJ and go with it. I tried to explain but again the alien look... ! About a week later he calls to let me know it was done and guess what, it tuned a perfect bullet hole. I asked if the top-hats had to be adjusted and guess what the answer was?? Duh? Back home I go and with a little tweaking, I now have the choice of shooting 250, 275, or 300 grains on the front of those same 300 spine arrows. So my point is just as the fairy stated. When nothing seems to be working with any of the combos, its probably the bow. And as a warning to you, alot of people will think your heavy arrow vision is ridiculous and that it wont work. I showed the shop guy pictures of the results of my post repair hand loads and I could tell I had his attention finally. He had at least started the thought process! Good luck and it will take time, effort and poss. some repair costs but it does work....

I know this feeling. The shop grabs the bow and shoots through paper quick with fletched arrows and calls it good. They think you’re crazy when you tell them you suspect it need yoke tuning or top hats switched because otherwise your center shot is too far off spec. Like you’re speaking another language.

When you say "get a psychologist," I can't help but imagine somebody actually sitting down with a psychologist and explaining how their bare shafts give them bullet holes at 7 yards but a slight tear at 20 yards. And the psychologist just staring at their notepad wondering what in the world is wrong with this person. Thanks for all the informational videos while still being extremely practical and helpful!

Couldn't get one of the heavy points to arrow tune. Did what he said, I stopped took a night sleep. Woke up and moved my rest till my 200 Grain points shot awesome. Guess what I now have 200 grain and 275 grain points shooting great and I didn't have to go nuts. Now I get the benefits of High FOC and Sharp broadheads this Fall. Been there and done that. Had to totally undue a paper tune from the pro shop because even though it would shoot bullet holes in paper, and the fixed blade heads hit with the field points it had no penetration and actually bounced a flapper off the side of a deer at 30 yards. In the end had to increase draw length because a slightly too short draw length(half an inch) was inducing bow hand torque, change the rest back to a more center shot position. and then increased point weight,

Definitely late to the party on this video, but I just found the channel last week. The best thing I ever did was to start moving my point/FOC and arrow weight up and paper tuning a few years ago. I would mess with the rest, d-loop, poundage and tiller until I got it right. And the amount of freedom from having to use a specific type of fletching is nice. Once my head wrapped around flight and penetration, I could care less about speed. You're the 1st person that I've heard talk about nock tuning. That'll be next on the list. Adult arrows for the win!!!

So what I have gotten out of all of the videos in this series is: 1. You need perfect form when you shoot. 2. Pre fletched arrows cut to length need no tuning. 3. Broadhead/insert weight doesn't matter. 4. You need as much of the total weight to the rear of the arrow. 5. Aluminum shafts are king. 6. It takes 5 minutes per set of 12 to properly tune an arrow. 7. You need to paper tune at 50 yards with a non fletched, pre deployed mechanical broadhead-wielding arrow. I have followed all of your steps to the minute detail and my arrows are travelling perfectly to hit the target exactly how they should. Broadside. Trolling aside though. Very much appreciate all of the hard work you put into your videos, and will definitely be following your videos to get my arrows ready for my first bow hunting excursion this year.

@@RanchFairy I refuse to admit how long it took me to actually took me to type all that out, but that is beside the point. 🤣 So one question I do have though is...fletching dimensions. I know that obviously getting 6 massive flu-flu feathers is the optimal way to go, but I was hoping that, although less ideal, something like a 2"x0.6" vane x3 would be adequate enough. *right after I posted this I realized that may not be enough information, but even just a general idea. I have (and will be using) 100 grain Montec g5's, yes, I know, not adult broadheads, but that's a next year plan, going to be using inserts to get the FOC up to compensate for the baby broadheads.

What you're saying in this video makes perfect sense to me. I'm no expert, but you want the fletchings on the Arrow to do as little work as possible. A stable arrow is a stable flight. A stable flight will keep your feet per second at a higher rate, better penetration at Peak Performance. Get the bare shaft as good as you can, and let the fletchings do the micro work.

lol I wish this video existed a year ago when I first tried to bare shaft tune my bow a beginner bow hunter. It was definitely one of the most frustrating things I had done in a while. This is the only video I've seen saying it's okay not to be perfect lol. Meanwhile, some other professional archer is correcting for a 1/16in knock high tears in their video. A couple additional suggestions I will add from my experience as a beginner are good strings make this a lot easier over time, make sure your timing is good. Shoot two or three times before adjusting. Also, I figured out aluminum arrows make the initial adjustments a lot easier because you don't have a spine to worry about so if you have some old ones laying around dial down the poundage a bit maybe and give it a try. Then switch to the carbons and knock tune. At least that's what worked for me as a normal human.

Maybe your best video! I took me a while, but I did see through the Ken Doll, Body by Venison mentality of the "UBER" bare-shafters. I went from cutting 8 1/2 x 11 paper nearly in half with CHART arrows, to ONCE IN A WHILE bullet holes. WASN't easy...I have at least 2 of every spine from 700 to 250, and a pension contribution worth of Ethics gear and arrow supplies to build within 5 grains of any arrow I design on a 3 Rivers calculator...That's what it takes. RF...Thanks for saving me the trouble, 'cause I had noted a need in the YT bareshaft community to get people out of the weeds, that couldn't see the forest through the trees. I'm too busy for videos, and you and Average Jack are doing just fine, lol. That being said, I went nearly 2 months trying to paper tune a bow that I thought was as tuned as I could get it. THEN, I stumbled across info for how to tune a SINGLE CAM BOW (listen up if you don't already know)...My tiller was so out of whack, that when I fixed it, my nock traveled close to an inch. Take a string and clamp it to the cams, so it runs from axel to axel...This is where you measure tiller from...NUN-CHUCKS OUT!

9:30 that’s exactly what I experienced. bought some Gold tip arrows to set up and hunt with, I’ve had enough of those “tough” yet so delicate FMJ’s. The gold tip arrows are 300 spine cut to 29 1/2 inches with 225 grains (point and insert) up front. I shot a few times just to see how they would fly as I was in a crunch for time. They did pretty well, with a little tweaking to the Nock and making sure my grip was good, they hit the target a little bit nock high but good. I then stripped the fletching off of one of the FMJ that was cut to 27 1/2 ( all the way back to the rest) when I was setup at the shop and shot that. They hit the target sideways so much that I could just about read the branding on the side! It is INSANE how much the fletching corrected the bad arrow flight.

One of the common causes of bow torque and erratic arrow flight even from a tuned set up, is shoulder creep in your bow arm. Push the bow away from your body as far as you can, then push it farther.

Hey Ranch Fairy, first off love the videos! Secondly I was wondering what set up you would refer me to for an “adult arrow”. I have a 29.5” draw length, shooting around 55 pounds hunting only whitetail in Northern Wisconsin.

Ian Johnson Sirius Vulcan 350 spine Cut to your arrow length - 100 insert 125 point Or equivalent - but definitely 350/340 spine.

Great video man! Question for ya, I have a 32 inch draw length and shoot 70 pounds (I'm a large guy) if I need to step that down I'm all ears. But I've never bare shaft tuned, where would I start as far as selecting an arrow? Currently running 12ish % foc on a 550 grain arrow. Thanks man! Great content.

If anybody checks this video b4 getting started. Your grip and form are absolutely vital in having correct arrow flight. Bow hand torque is a huge issue. Make sure you, yourself, are shooting flawlessly(form) b4 taking your bow to the shop. Most of the "pro shops" won't really help you and will just say it's your arrow weight causing problems

Especially the short bows below 32” ATA I get 1,000 messages a month and the “short hunting bows” are unforgiving. Ever wonder why the target guys shoot longer more forgiving systems to hit a really small target? Hmmmmmmm

@@RanchFairy a lot of guys don't take the time to do it. I've discovered so much about myself and my bow that never was even a thought before. My bow I realized is grip sensitive. Literally changing my finger layout, tweeked the torque out of my bow. Thanks for always responding and being revolutionary in the industry

If you get so aggravated at people asking questions why post vids. BUUUUUTTTTT you are exactly right about all the different people and there ignorance to tuning. I deal with it too man. You just seem very irritated at your own making. Know what I mean Vern. Your funny as shit.

I have never been able to paper tune any of my bows. I use walk back or French tuning and I can get a two inch group at 50 yards. Plenty good enough to win me a couple of chanpionships in the past.

That's exactly what he mentioned you derp er derp...it's not hard to get it good enough to stick in a stationary foam target. You have to get these flying absolutely dead nuts in order to maximize penetration in order to break bones and zip through vitals like a freaking lazer beam! Pay attention man, you can do better.

Speaking of using paper, I have a bow I’ve hunted with for years. It shot bullet holes until I upped the arrows to 550. No amount of nock tuning worked on some arrows, fishtailed right. I didn’t want to but moved the rest a little, it improved. Moved it a little more, perfect. So went back to paper to see how bad I screwed it up. Bullet holes. Is it because of the higher FOC the arrow flexes more even though the spine is stiffer? Not sure but it works now. Took my back up bow and set it up for 650 arrows. Same thing. Fish tailed until I moved the rest a touch. Two different bows by 2 different manufacturers. Several different brands of arrows. Some flew worse than others but all now fly pretty well now. I’ve got several different broad head choices I’ve tried on these arrows and so far no major problems. Things are looking good.

You know, I don’t think most people can take your type of sarcasm because most people don’t like the truth. If you’re going to take the plunge into “Adult Arrows”, I guess you have to make the sacrifice and go all in with an open mind and patience. I haven’t tried it yet but I want to. I like the set up you did for Ted. Those broad heads look awesome.
