This is a video documentary of our first experience euthanizing a family pet. Recording video of this process was one of the most difficult things for me to do. Diane and I decided that is was important to share our personal experience with you to help you make your decision as to when it is time to say goodbye to your pet, and how to do it as compassionately as possible. Watching and editing two days of video clips was torturous. I was living this heart-wrenching experience repeatedly. I cannot say how many tears I shed.
This video is long. But, I felt it important to include our final hours and walks with Shadow so that you can better understand her physical and cognitive condition, quality of life and why it was time to say goodbye to a member of our family and our best friend.
We love you and will never forget you.

She was NOT ready to go! She was STILL eating, walking around and drinking! It's honestly f#*ked up that they murdered her when she was clearly still living well just with a bit of difficulty that they could have gotten her treatments to help her mobility such as doggy chiropractor and acupuncture. They just took the easy way out and murdered her instead of bothering to spend the extra time needed to care for and elderly senior dog. She was clearly still doing well. This made me sick to watch. Euthanasia is disgusting and unnatural. It should only be used in the most dire of circumstances when the dog can not eat, drink, go to the bathroom and is crying in pain. That dog was clearly still enjoying her old life and able to do ALL those things and they stole that life away from her. It was not theirs to take. It was HER life. I am sure if she had the choice she would have wanted to stay until she passed away peacefully.

I cannot thank you enough for being so brave and sharing this intimate moment. I know it was a hard choice to make but I know that you gave Shadow an amazing life. I am a first time dog mom who recently lost my fiance tragically at only 45 years old. My rescue baby Bebe is getting older and I know I don't have a whole lot longer with her. I watched your video so I would know what to expect as I will say goodbye at home as well since she doesn't like going into the vet. I had to be brave to even watch your loving final act for your beloved Shadow. Thank you so much for doing this. It offers me a bit of comfort seeing how peaceful your Shadow went on to be in a better place and out of pain. It is no doubt that you gave Shadow such an amazing life. There is nothing better a dog could hope for than all the adventures and love you gave! The best thing we can do through painful trials is to help another through the same and that is just what you have done. Though I cried through the whole video, and still am, I know it will make me a bit stronger when my Bebe's time is up. May God richly bless you for sharing!!

@randallwingett Please excuse the misspelled words in the previous comment. When I picked up my Bonhams ashes, I packed a bag & left town for 2 days with his urn seat belted into the passenger seat, his collar & blanket wrapped around it. I had made him a promise that I would take him to some of the beautiful places in my state, WV & that's what I did. At each river or lake, I left a bit of his ashes. When I go out of town to visit friends, I always have a bit of his ashes with me & leave some at the places I know he would've loved. I promised him he would travel everywhere with me & he has. For 14 years, he wasn't just my dog he was my comfort & protection in an abusive marriage. When we divorced, Bonham came back to WV with me. He was my everything. When it is my time to crossover, his ashes will be with mine & spread together over one of the most beautiful places he & I went together. Bless you for telling your story.

We had our beautiful Bishon Frise dog put to sleep during the Covid pandemic, as he was desperately poorly. We weren't allowed to go into the vets surgery, we desperately wanted to hold our dog so he knew we were with him. So our wonderful vet carried him out to our car, and administered the last injection as we held him close and talked to him. We were utterly heartbroken 💔 I think it's very brave of you to share this heartbreaking video. I just found your video the other night. I will be euthanizing my 19 year old dog tomorrow morning. She has kidney disease and heart disease. She was just diagnosed two weeks ago, but the stress of the vet visit (all the tests and scans) coupled with putting medications in her body to try and hold off the kidney disease, treat a mild UTI, and stimulate her appetite (due to the antibiotic causing her to lose it), spiraled her into decline. She had very few symptoms and a good quality of life before I took her to the vet. Now she has begun to fall apart. I can’t let her suffer. All the vets just want to do more testing and diagnostics and medications to help. But she is 19, there aren’t any years left that we can buy her. And in the end it’s a losing battle. All the medications do is mask the symptoms and stave off the inevitable end. The diseases will progress and she will suffer. And her body is very old and frail and seems to have worse reactions to the medications than to the diseases. So by trying to help, it’s only causing her more suffering. This is the most painful decision. She would fight till the very end. But it’s unfair to expect her to. I want her to have a pain free and peaceful transition into the next life.

Our choco lab boy, our beloved Sid, came to the end of the road one gorgeous sunny summer morning when he woke up totally blind (overnight). He was already deaf and couldn't get up or move about without assistance. The blindness was for us was unbearable for him, we couldn't bare for him to be in silent blackness and so later that day we said goodbye at home. He was within familiar surrounding right to the end with me laying on the floor tight up to him. When the end came I just howled and howled, I was so distraught, and cried for days and days, and I was a 56 year old man. Even now 4 years later I choke up badly when I stop and remember him and our lives together. I am choking now. Best off to bed.

Although he had a really hard start in life, he had a loving departure with me loving and making sure I was there in his last seconds, just cuddling him. They always say that an animal that you loved, will never leave until their mission is completed. Take heart in that. I am just shocked by some people's comments and lack of understanding. I pray they are fortunate to not have to ever make this difficult decision but I also pray that if they every have a beloved animal that is suffering they can put their feelings aside and do what's best for the animals. Anyway, Thank you both again for sharing shadows journey with us!

I have just come back from the vets after putting my dog down 16 years this beautiful baby of mine my heart is broken the moment however I do know it was the right decision for her seeing your dog suffer prolonging a dog's life is not the right thing to do for your own self in my way I feel relieved if I'm honest but still very sad saying goodbye to her looking her in the eyes as she was being put to sleep but I know it was the right choice

The way you two knew exactly what she needed at every step she took, I knew you are very faithful, protective , caring, fierce pet owners. I know this was two years ago but I have no doubt the sting of this day still lingers. You gave her a peaceful, beautiful, loving goodbye, and she deserved to go gracefully, quietly, and surrounded by her safe place. Thank you for sharing this with us. I hope you have another dog to dote on. All pets in the world deserve the care you give to yours. ❤️

We lost our little Bisquit suddenly and very unexpectedly in 2021. It was during COVID, but our vet was so amazing. They put chairs in their back lawn and let us hold him and say our goodbyes as long as we needed. The beautiful thing is that his ashes were buried in an apple orchard. We still look at his little collar and remember all the good times. We ended getting two sweet puppies to fill the void. Animals are amazingly impactful both during and after life. Our hearts go out to you both. Rest in peace Shadow.

That was peaceful, 20 years ago I held my German shepherd Khyber when we had to say good bye on a vets table - he was my best friend growing up and was with me everyday. At age 10 over a couple of weeks his stomach swelled up and he went off his food - we brought him to the vets and it was terminal aggressive stomach cancer, I looked into his eyes and spoke to him as the vet gave the injection - it was so fast the light in his eyes vanished in a second. Me and my sister both cried like little children ... I was 20 years old. His pain was over instantaneous, I don't know why we don't provide the same respect to ourselves when all that is left is pain.

No it is not her time yet. My fiancé‘s dog had a stroke and when he got her he promised that he would take care of her until the very end. He held her up so she could go to the bathroom, he put the water bowl up for her and he held it while she drank the water and then he would take a towel and wipe underneath her chin. She couldn’t walk so he’s a cabinet maker and he made her like a wheelchair so she could walk. He never gave up on her ever. However she had a second stroke and was seizing. Even with the midazolam, that the vet gave her, she was still seizing. He kept his word and he took care of her until the very very end even walking for her and feeding her and giving her water. I have never ever seen such love in my life. Personally, I don’t think it was Shadows time. I think if she would’ve lost some weight, she would have been a lot healthier. In any case it’s not my dog and obviously not my choice. Nevertheless I would never ever put my dog down if they were not in pain and they still had enjoyment from food and walks etc. Everyone is different. I’m so glad I’m not their dog. RIP SHADOW

My dog has a powerful name to be such a small poodle mix. His name is heavy d and he has cancer and is blind as well. He is 12 and it's at a point where facing this is very hard but it would be for his good. His quality of life is of the past now ; although, he will make himself get around and eat and drink and almost yell please don't let me go. This is hard to watch because I'm facing the possibility of doing this pretty soon. Thanks for sharing. God bless the both of you. Rest easy precious one

My boy Scrappy is 14 with cancer. He has anal gland adenocarcinoma, which is malignant and aggressive. The life span untreated (Surgery & chemo) is generally 6 months and maybe up to a year. He also has a tumor on his back paw which my Vet tech said more than likely cancer, and it's growing. She said if removed they have to take his toe off. He already has arthritis in his back legs and struggles to get up, if we took his toe, he would not be able to walk at all. My Vet tech has come to my house twice to clip his nails, and I cry because we are so grateful, he can't get in the car anymore. My vet will come to our house and euthanize, but will need at least 24 hours notice in advance. I am praying we won't have to take him to the emergency vet to be euthanized. ~ This is so hard. I am sorry you are walking this journey too.
