What has been your best recent fabric or sewing supplies find?

My friend gave me 3 large garbage bags of scraps, 99% are 2.5 inch strips last weekend. I have managed to sort them all by color. I am going to go back through them again and pull out the fabrics I know I will never reach for and pass them on.

@tamelasimmons7 good idea! That sounds like a lot of scraps! Nice friend!

I think your first lot was the nicest. The white fabric appeared to be gauze. I enjoy videos like this showing a fabric haul. The shorter length is nice when you just have a little time to watch.

I went to a Goodwill that was new to me. The stars aligned, I bought several quilting cottons with multiple yards that are perfect for quilt backs. The best was a beautiful batik with sunny yellow to deep butterscotch. It was almost 5 yards. Several were half off the marked price, including the batik ($2.50) and a hot pink minky. I spent $25 and could hardly carry the two huge bags to the car! I have gone back twice but nothing like that first haul😊. I have used several fabrics with stretch, even sweaters, when sweater pillows were popular. I used fusible interfacing before cutting and it worked great everytime.

Ooh, nice! You did well, particularly with the webbing, as that is expensive! You could add to the completed alphabet blocks and make library bags. (Wonky log cabin style.) The chiffon could be made into produce bags. So many treasures!

Nice haul. Those threads are used for hand embroidery and the other sheers and wooly bits can be used in art quilting. I have not been buying fabric, only when needed. I shop my stash! I have 2 more rows to sew together for my improv then sew the rows up.

I like your idea of rolling the fabric scrap colors up to organize them. In the photo it looks like I might save more space doing it that way! thank you for sharing your scrap haul !!

Yes it should save space. I have rolled clothes in suitcases when going on trips to save space for years but it only dawned on me when I did that sewing room re-jig that the same thing could work for fabric.

Those metallic threads are for hand embroidery or cross. Metallic threads for machine embroidery spools look different. Be sure to use the right metallic thread needle for using metallics. Crinkly material is gauze. I used double gauze for summer lightweight quilt with no wadding/batting, it was a very successful project.

Hi Kristen, I've used Kreinik thread with embroidery. Some are difficult to use and shred easily. Recently I have acquired a rotor cutter with a perforation blade. Good to use if you are copying foundation patterns on thicker paper. You can run it over the lines, which makes it easier to rip off.

What great fabrics . I would suggest selling the chiffons and stretchy bits to someone who works with dance or figure skating Costumes. I used to make figure skating dresses and I'm sure someone would be thrilled to have those fabrics. I have done a little bit with metallic thread . it's great for decorative stitching. You need a special needle for metallic threads, a very slow machine speed and use a vertical spool pin ( I think) because of the way the thread is wound on the spool. But I'm sure that you can confirm that with an internet search.

Good idea! I do need to have a serious think and sort out at some point - if I haven’t used any of it by they might very well be in the sell box 😂

I run a bead of Sewer's Aid on the metallic spools to make it glide through the machine and needle without shredding.

For metallic thread you need a larger hole in the machine needle. I use them in machine embroidery to give the quilt blocks some extra interest. Some metallic are not good quality and are not worth trying to sew things with it. If you told me the brand name I could tell you if it is a good one.

I have another video about how I find them but generally I am searching broad terms on eBay and filtering to ending soonest and UK (where I am) . I don’t always find something but sometimes there are gems. The video I talk about it in is a couple years old - it’s 9 ways to buy cheap fabric for quilting.
