This is the second video in an improv quilt along I am calling ‘Modern Improv Scrap Quilt’ based on a previous video I did a couple of years ago.
Week 1 of the Quilt Along is here: • Modern Scrap Quilt Alo...
The original Modern Scrap Quilt Video is here: • Modern Improv Scrap Qu...
This week’s video is about starting to piece our scraps and background fabrics into units and sections. Come be a fly on the wall in my sewing room as I try to talk you through why I am choosing to sew some things together and not others - I usually make these decisions without thinking but for this video, I made a point of stopping to try to describe it to you guys. I am hoping it will help you see that improv is really just a series of personal taste choices and that you are just as capable of making those choices to create a quilt that you really love.

I totally get it! I’m a very visual person, and when I saw what you were doing in this video, it clicked with me. I am just in awe of your creativity, girl! You really should enter that quilt into a quilt show, it is going to be gorgeous. This quilt is a fine example of why I love your channel. You are so creative, your quilts are one of a kind art pieces. Thank you so much for sharing. For me, the video wasn’t too long, and I didn’t speed it up. In fact it was so awesome. I’m watching it for a second time. Period

Hey, Kristen! I’m really enjoying this series! Thank you for sharing your thoughts as you select, arrange, and piece sections. This is really helpful. I think I mentioned in a previous comment that have my plate full at the moment, so I will put this on the back burner for now. I think I also shared that I used some Debbie Maddy fabrics to make a improv lap quit after you posted your other one (white bkgrd). I made the quilt sandwich; but I wasn’t really sure if I liked the result, so I set it aside. I took it out today, and put it on my design board. I now quite like it, so I’m looking forward to quilting this along with you on my BabyLock Sashiko 2. Thank you for the inspiration…and for the nudge in the right direction! 😊 Stay well! MuskokaON 🇨🇦

Kristin, I have a lot of reds. It's my favorite color. Do you think I could use all those different reds as my background and use different creams, low volumes as my small bits? I love your concept. I think it would look great like this. Do you have any ideas for me?

@ScrapFabricLove

Hi! Yes red with low accent scraps would look fab. I would just say keep the reds as close to the same shade as you can to keep it looking like ‘the background’ however I am saying that mostly thinking of multicoloured scraps. If your quilt is essentially going to be red and cream the contrast should be obvious so go for it and make it your own! Would love to see it when you are done.

Loved watching your process and hearing what your thoughts were. I'm one who doesn't trust my instincts, artistically, so this would be an interesting exercise. Maybe I'll try it in the future. One comment, the music was okay during the sped up segments, but on my end, it was waayyyyy too loud! 🔊 I had to turn the sound off. My husband actually ran in from the other room to see what was going on! LOL! See you next week!

I like how you are showing us your process, but I don't understand the connection between the first part where you spread out things on the floor and the pieced blocks. It doesn't seem like you are following a plan for where things go, is that right? I may try a version of this but with a slightly different process since I don't have floor space or a design wall yet. I think I will look for a medium grey as my background. To me, the black(or very dark grey?) makes the scraps look smaller floating in space. White/low volume I don't think would be my preference either-too stark. I might try pale something(what ever solid I have in enough yardage). I really connected with what you said at the beginning-about trusting yourself and what we know. I think I needed to hear that! Just not enough hours in the day for all I want to make...have to squeeze this quilt in somewhere soon! Thank you!
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 4 ай бұрын
Hi! You are right I’m not planning it. Laying it out like that is for the color mix. So I don’t know where everything will end up but I know it will all be together in the same quilt so I am just visually checking that I like all the fabrics together in a general way before I start sewing. Hope that makes sense! But of course you should change the process to suit you! Good luck with your version. I’d love to see it when you are done!

Absolutely crazy way to do improv and I LOVE it! I have tons of scraps so I could make a million quilts (except I don’t have that much background fabric). No, really, I enjoyed your process. My own improv quilts are much heavier on the prints. I’m struggling now with how to put my crumb blocks together. I have all different sizes of blue crumb blocks and I don’t want to use coping strips. What do you suggest? Also, I think I’d love your idea for the back of quilts. I also loved the design you came up with for your uncle’s quilt. Thank you for sharing with us!
@ScrapFabricLove

Thanks! For the backing I have another video called something like 9 ways to back a quilt I think which you could find. And in terms of the background fabric the first version I did of this was with ‘prints’ - low volume type stuff - so if you had lots of similarly coloured less busy prints that could work for a background in a pinch!

Hi Kristen, are all your scraps 100 percent cotton. Love this idea but I struggle with colour. I am making a scrap quilt atm and it is just any scraps throwen in together. It is a queen size so I hope it looks okay when I am finished. Would love to be carefree like you. Maybe one day 🤪😂. Desley from Australia

They are all quilting cotton scraps yes but I would have no problem throwing in some other fabric, like old clothes etc. I don’t tend to buy polyester quilting fabric but that is just cause I don’t like the way it feels in my hands not because of any issue with working with it.

I suspect that this may be a bad idea but....I have a large piece of black rayon and a few rayon "Hawaiian" shirts (very bright patterns). If I used a "quilt as you go" method, do you - or anyone out there - think it would work as say a car/picnic quilt. I realize that rayon is shifty. Thoughts?
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 4 ай бұрын
I don’t think I’ve sewn with rayon before myself but if you are going to do quilt as you go anyway you could easily test it on a small unit/block etc to see what happens. If you can get it quilted down my guess is it shouldn’t be any harder to join your sections. Maybe someone with experience of rayon can jump in and help…🤞🏻

Sometimes she has no control over the volume of the music. KZfaq does all kinds of stupid things that the creator has no control over. Just like the creator can say that don’t want commercials or only one but KZfaq will automatically put in commercials every couple minutes and the creator has ZERO control. I’m sure Kristen did not purposely play loud music during her video. That is definitely not the kind of person she is!! I’m sure she will try to find out what happened.

True about the ads but it was my mistake with the music - I was switching between video editing programmes and totally got the transition wrong between the music and the talking I guess. It wasn’t obvious to me when I played it back in the editor but maybe it sounds different when it goes live on KZfaq. I don’t use that much music these days so I will try not to do it again for sure!
