#ParisCreativeForDJsOnly Honestly I was taken aback that this was even real when I first learned about it. I had wondered after inMusic took control over brands like Numark, Denon, and Rane what those lineups would look like and if the moving platter controller concept would live on. It has, and in a big way with the Rane One.

I have not bought any DJ gear since Technics 1210's back in the 90's. I wanted to get back into DJing, but I just never ever accepted the idea of static Jog wheels, first seen on the Pioneer CDJ1000. Coming from 1210's, there is just a feel that I need, to get a song in time, and that just was not replicated by static jog wheels. Fast forward to 2021, and RANE out of nowhere, answers my dreams, that I did not even ask for. This is the deck for me, I don't even scratch, I play House and DnB, but it is all about the feel for me. RANE SUPREME!!!

I was an old-school crate hauler and then took a 13-year break before I got back into it in 2012. When I came back I tried jog-based controllers and it just never connected me to the music. As soon as I got my SC3900s I knew what was missing. And I went from the 3900s > NS7ii > Reloop RP8000 + Rane 62 > NS7iii > TWELVES + Rane 62 > NS7iiii > One

I own an NS7III, and from what I see here it's not enough for me to drop.1,500$ on this to replace my NS7III. MY NS7III is a tank it's a workhorse. It works well amd I never read line I adjust my mains and volumes in practice to Be prepared for that. And as for the four channel or 2 channels I use the Mike on my channel 4 as a dedicated mike output and like it so I can add effects from the Dedicated channel ..I also like the 3 screens on the NS7III. For the most part it's like the same basic Concept as the NS7III... so I'm good.. however what I do like is the larger Platters that looks nice. The biggest sell9ng point is the Lather Platters but a downside is the lack of Screens and the lack of Effects.. when I do mixes I add effects sometimes as a signature to my blends to make the mix my own..

The NS7-series are tanks there are no doubt. For me the quality of the soundcard (and multiple that x2), shedding nearly 10 pounds and having a smaller profile, the better feeling platters, the more utilitarian feel of Rane vs. the more gimmicky feel of Numark; those are all huge reasons for me to switch. It's not going to be for everyone. If you need 4 channels then it's def not for you, if you play it hot it's not for you. But for many, this is the new benchmark. Also a new NS7iii was $1499 so it's priced the same at launch. Actually if you want to get real technical, if you take the inflation calculator back to 2015 it was released for $1636 in 2020 dollars.

Well I don't think you can go wrong with either. It really comes down to portability. For me as a wedding DJ that wants to keep my setup and strike time to a minimum and not break my back lifting things the Rane One is really the best of it all. But if portability wasn't an issue I'd probably be running with my Reloop Elite (or a Rane Seventy) and my TWELVES.

Thank you for this in-depth detailed comparison review! It is by far the best out there so far. I own the NS7II and have always enjoyed it but felt conflicted since it was missing some key features in my opinion. I don't need or want 4 channels as I'm a turntablist at heart and the NS7II all red fader LEDs and buttons drive me crazy. I have pre-ordered Rane One and can't wait to get my hands on it! It sounds like Rane really paid close attention to detail of what mobile DJ turntablists are looking for in a perfect controller. I also own Rane Twelves and S9 mixer and although I love them and they are my main setup they are a pain to lug around and set up/tear down. I appreciate you doing a head to head comparison of the main and mic sound and volume signals. I'm glad to hear output is clean and not as hot. I had a Rane 62 also and loved it but the layout of the S9 is just so easy. It looks like Rane one mixer is now copied straight from Rane 70 mixer and that is fantastic in my opinion! I appreciate your thoughts and overall impressions as they mostly mirror my own. Thanks! -John Roth (DJ Libertad)

Honestly I only ever use the sampler itself for station ID drops in my radio sets. Otherwise it's never used. To the lack of a knob would not really be an issue for me. @djlouparis
@djlouparis 3 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt an NS7iv would come out. With the acquisition of Numark, Denon, Rane and Numark being positioned as an entry-level budget brand the NS7-series was an oddball out. It made more sense for it to be reborn as a Denon or Rane. And frankly I love that it fell under the Rane flag, not that Denon is bad I do love them, but there is just something so very straight forward about the Rane design and it's still built like a tank. If there were a 4-channel motorized platter that launches it likely falls under Denon. But I think that is a stretch if that happens.

@djlouparis

I do not own the DDJ1000 so it's hard for me to do a one on one comparison. I will say this, traditionally Rane has a more warmer sound where Pio has a bit more of a harsher sound in the mids/highs. It's actually one of the reasons I got rid of my S9 (that and some bad I/O ports). If history is any indicator then the One might have a more appealing sound profile.

This is a great review! I currently own the Pioneer DDJ-1000SRT, which is a great controller, but changing to moving platters would be a nice upgrade since I started out on turntables. Nonetheless, I wish it had onboard FX. How would you compare the Rane One to the Pioneer DDJ-1000SRT?
@djlouparis
@djlouparis 3 жыл бұрын
So I got to play around with the 1000SRT when it had first came out (was at the DJ Expo in NJ and a few of us DJs did a long session on it). It's a competent mixer but since I am so tied into moving platters my opinion is very biased on it. To me the One would blow it out of the water. The build quality, the feel of the platters, the layout is all Rane and I love it. As for onboard effects, I don't see people doing much in the way of using the One as a pure mixer and hooking in DVS on the sides, but it is a scenario that can happen. So having the onboard effects would have pushed costs higher if they went that route.

Great overview and comparison. The Rane One is next on my wishlist! How does the output and gain to noise ratio compare to the Rane 62?
@djlouparis
@djlouparis 3 жыл бұрын
So the problem I ran into is that my current macOS installs are 64-bit only and my 62 control panel will not load, so I cannot test it properly. What I can say is subjective and historic but the 62 has more overall output. This is not to say the One is somehow bad or lacking. Someone mentioned a good point that on the One the 0db point is really at the max position instead of being at say the 12 o'clock position. It certainly will deter from redlining. As for noise, I could not hear any noise beyond what the noise floor of the digital mixer (Soundcraft Ui24) has itself. So from a quality of signal perspective it seems completely there with no compromises.

Wow!! The rane one looks very nice🔥 I have the numark NS7III. something that I don't understand is why is the rane one so expensive? Is more expensive then the NS7III which comes with a mixer of 4 channels vs the rane one with only 2 channels? I know that the NS7III is an old controller but still I feel that the Rane One is very Expensive for only 2 channels also, do you think Numark is going to release anything soon?
@djlouparis
@djlouparis 3 жыл бұрын
Well from a retail price perspective it was selling at $1399 so the One isn't much more expensive. Now that the NS7iii is past its end of life and all you can get is old-new stock the prices are going to be naturally lower. And honestly as I noted in the video the quality of the Rane One really is much more significant. You are essentially getting miniaturized TWELVES and a Rane 70 minus the built in effects and mag channel faders. I'd rate it a bargain. 😀 As for 4 channels honestly I have zero need for it and nothing in the current Rane lineup is 4 channels. I wouldn't expect it either. If there were a new inMusic company produced 4-channel controller it would probably be a Denon and it would be probably be a little more $. I wouldn't expect a similar product from Numark again. They are a somewhat budget brand before and really are one now.

Thanks for the super detailed review...only thing you have worried that the output is too weak? Is it that much quieter than a 72/70? The main reason, I am asking is because I often come straight out of the mixer to the speakers. Since it has to mic inputs, I would rather not set up an external mixer
@djlouparis
@djlouparis 3 жыл бұрын
I wish I had a 70 or 72 in my possession to give you a proper assessment. But I would wager those run hotter than the One. Someone made an interesting note to me and it sorta makes sense. The One's 0db spot is at max where other controllers or mixers come in closer to the 12 o'clock position. If you are the type of DJ that keeps it under the red, then I think you are OK. If you are pushing hotter than that, then I think you might find it lacking. Then again you can always turn up your gains at the speakers to compensate if that is the case. Personally, in my studio I normally run just to the speaker and it's plenty loud. If I push it, it does get cranked to near max, but I think that is still more than adequate. Think of it as a stopper from running too hot to your speakers and frying the circuitry there (which I have with my 62 my my older Yamaha Subs before).

The 3900s were the bomb. Lightweight and that 9" platter was a great size to fit in the hand. But damn that sticker drift always killed me. @@SuperPussyFinger I mean a lot of this comes down to a visual and tactile viewpoint. If Rane would love to send one me to tear down I'd love to go part for part. But given that Rane has seemingly not skimped on the quality of materials, from the very typical outer-shell materials to adding the mag-fader, and the feel of the platters I'd probably say it would outlast the NS7iii. I say this from past devices like the 62 that are not only tanks but they are just really built to last. The NS7iii is no slouch but it was also put together by a more budget minded company (and now they are really budget based in the inMusic world).

This seems to be a more recurring question so I had to test things out: 1) In Serato it does not matter. It likely expecting the NS7ii or NS7iii to be connected so even with things hooked up it wont work unless Serato makes some changes to that 2) In VDJ it does work, but with caveats: 2a) There is no place to mount the monitors directly on the One 2b) You have to deliver 12v/2a power to it. There is no power delivery mechanism on the controller

Did you change the gain on your digital mixer when switching between the 2 boards? If one board is hotter than the other, you have to adjust the gain to compensate. Try this for each board, and maybe use a different set of inputs to compare. Play a pink noise track, set the channel gain on the controller for 0db on the meter, set the master level for 0db on the master output meter, then adjust the gain on your digital mixer for a 0db level. THEN use this setting to measure noise, and the pink noise to measure the spectrum, as there's no way to compare frequency response on a spectrum by playing music. I have noticed the mic level on the NS7iii to be low, almost unusable when I tried it at a wedding (My Denon 6000's and 7000 never had this problem), so I always used an external mixer after that. I never got around to playing with the unit to see if I could bring that mic level above the music.
@djlouparis
@djlouparis 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I actually tried to set my gain stage in two ways. First I just wanted to see what at "50% output" registered between my three units I was testing (One, NS7iii, Elite) just to gauge "the hotness" of each unit while setting my gains on my digital mixer to 0db and ensuring that no compression, EQ or anything else was there to color the sound. When I did that I noticed that the NS7iii was way too hot and I was hearing noise on the channel to boot. It's just a really noisy soundcard on it. So I went about marking out where each unit was in relationship to "dial gain" and where I adjusted on the channel gain on my digital board: Rane One - Master Out @ 12 o'clock - Ui24R at +14db Numark NS7iii - Master Out @ 10 o'clock - Ui24R at +14db Reloop Elite - Master Out @ 12 o'clock - Ui24R at +0db The Numark seems to have a pretty odd curve, and then adding the noise in the mix it was a little challenging to dial in nicely. I am going to upload a separate video in a few (still editing) where I am overlaying things and swapping between views regularly. I did this briefly in this video but without the music to avoid copyright issues. The short of it is that the responses were pretty close across the board, maybe giving the Rane a slight difference in a more colored output. You would occasionally see just a little bit of additional output in the lower and higher parts of the spectrum. But given this is not a direct in-line pure real time analyzer that could have been an anomaly. From a pure "from the ear" perspective I would say that the Elite has a colder sound, the NS7iii a hair more compressed sound, and the One a tad warmer sound. But this of course is purely subjective. The NS7iii mic is pretty much totally unusable. The One outshined the NS7iii and the Reloop. It had very solid mic performance.

The NS7iii has CoreAudio so if you are running on macOS you are good for as long as Apple keeps supporting it. As for updated Win drivers on the Numark site they are still at 1.0.0 for the drivers so it hasn't been updated in 6 years, and now it's been end of life for a while now. I am very skeptical that Rane would ever release a 4-channel version. They don't have any 4-channel mixers in their lineup anymore (the 64 and 68 are long gone) and frankly a lot of DJs that Rane are marketing to are the 2-channel battle-style people. Maybe Denon comes out with a 5000M-based controller someday with a condensed 1800 mixer. But only time will tell.

you use the capacative touch as kill switches or what ever you want, so you don’t need to have stem pads or eq pads. so you can instantly create am instrumental or acapella, and you can instantly take out vocals to stop clashing in a mix. If you use vdj it allows you to make hardware that serato would make you buy, bdj allows you to create what you want and allocate multiple actions to one button.

I don't see any thing that would improve my performance or creativity. I am only seeing feature differences. 1. I love my 4 channel 2. I love the layout of the NS7III 3. Either do not have on boarding EFX. This is a deal breaker 4. There are somethings that I like about the Rane One but its still not enough to move on from the NS7III 5. I like the laptop rack on the NS7III 6. You're right the pitch slider should be in battle style along the top 7. To be frank it will likely be YEARS before a revision will come out. They can't even keep up with demand now with all the supply chain issues going on. But my note on the on-board FX. I still don't see what the demand is for this. You realize you will spend more to have licensed effects on board, and you are not spinning vinyl here, everything has to go through software to work. So why spend more for something so trivial?

Why should the pitch slider be along the top, that’s what is stupid about the twelves. The reason why the slider is rotated to the top on 1200’s is becuase the tone arm is in a much better location. It really is weird when I see people touching the rotary's for literally no reason, other than performance, but when CDJ's enable you to get your mix in time soo quick, you have to fill your time doing something, before the next track is mixed in somehow. This reminds me of a set I saw livestreamed on rpan on reddit tonight. Chick was a minimal techno dj. Using a ddj-1000. Good set. I was enjoying it. chatroom was totally a buzz. But people were totally clowning on her because of her gear. "she turned a knob!" "she turned another knob, lookout!" It reminded me why I decided to learn to scratch in the first place. While im sure Chris Liebing, Richie Hawtin, or Speedy J can scratch if they wanted to. I mean, they've each been dj'ing 30+ years a piece. That's not how their minimal techno/stems layering sets work. And because of it, they layman doesn't understand what's going on and that explanation is just too long for people that aren't dj to even make them want to sit through hearing you explaining what is going on. All they know, is a dj, using turntables, or anything like turntables. That's a dj. No explanation needed. They know the moment they see it and with the advent of controllers. While not all changes are 100% positive. it's created this visual perception that controller dj's are lesser dj's. I'm not saying they are, or they aren't. I'm saying that's the public perception and there's not changing that.
@djlouparis
@djlouparis 3 жыл бұрын
There certainly is that perception in large part because of some of the "poseurs" that came around and basically soured a bunch of people on it. A minimalist techno DJ isn't supposed to scratch (mostly) and has it's own set of challenges to make a really tight set. But for some, it's all about the visual performance.

The screens honestly for me were a gimmick, be it on the NS7iii (which I yanked mine off right away) or even the S11 or Rane72. And why would you need onboard FX? This is a MIDI controller that needs VDJ, Serato, et al. On board effects is a useless additional cost if it were added.

@@djlouparis You're missing my point totally, which is for $1500 it SHOULD have onboard audio FX. MIDI implementation has nothing to do with my statement since If it has an onboard audio card then it's not just a MIDI controller. The absence of an onboard audio FX module in my opinion makes this overpriced. Not to mention the absence of display screens (which are a nice workflow convenience for some, like me) as well. Thus my overall take on this piece; nice but overpriced @ $1500. $1000 - $1200 (considering the motorized platters) absolute max seems like a more appropriate price.

Going to these expos can easily be multiple tens-of-thousands of dollars for floor space, flights, personnel, hotels, inventory, etc. Lastly I am sure some people were concerned for COVID and that had some impact as well. Awesome choice on the purchase! I am considering getting a second myself. :)

Rane One came out after the NS7III. Good comparison yes. Coming from 1200s to Controller, the NS7III is very similar. Initially, my thoughts about the controls not being symmetrical (Pitch, Pitch Bend, etc) were WHYYYYY. The thing is that with the compactness of the controllers, some of those controls if placed in a symmetrical fashion would be too close to some other sliding controls as you pointed out on the RANE One (Pitch and Volume Slider for Channel 1) which could be easily accidentally moved at the wrong time. The Start/Pause with the pad material is to me better than a "click switch" which will eventually wear. The Pads on the NS7III light all the way around BTW. One thing I noticed with the RANE One is that the lights from the pads reflect on the Jog Wheel. The NS7III doesn't. Red is better for eyesight in the dark as well. Just a few of my thoughts.

It's interesting because I really hated the all red of the Numark. There was just no visual distinguishing between functions/areas and I can understand the reason not to go symmetrical since those coming from a two decks and a mixer style would not have a symmetrical layout either.

I still wish Rane upgrades this to Rane Four, with four ch. with the FX section upgrade, so one can use at least 2 different FX for the left/right side. Also would be needed a Rane Seven (like V7’s were), so one can get 4 small spinning platters for the 4 channels. I know it is a niche market, but Pioneer doesn’t make spinning platters, it would be a logical step both to Rane and anyone want morethan 2ch.
@djlouparis
@djlouparis 3 жыл бұрын
I don't see any of these scenarios happening. Rane is positioned itself as "the battle mixer" company and their philosophy is really geared towards two channels. I will put my money that Rane will likely never produce a 4-channel version. As for the effects split you could manage it where effects 1-3 are really just dedicated for your A deck and 4-6 for your B deck. I def do not see a Rane SEVEN in the future. It would pilfer potential sales from the One and the TWELVE. If you really need 4 decks the Denon SC5000M would be your better bet in that regard.

I am not sure how you can say this has less effects. It has the same 3-effect per-channel control than the NS7iii. And less compatibility, how exactly? The NS7iii is now past its end of life. It's a version or two away from complete obsolescence unless you stick with older OSes and hope you never need support. As for the loss of 4-channels, I have met maybe 5-6 people that actually mix 4-channels. You do have discrete control of a mic and a line in. That is effectively all the channels needed by a DJ.

I was one of the first videos out there with an actually BOUGHT One, not one furnished by Rane. Yes the NS7iii is past its end of life. No new units can be bought unless it's old-new stock and Numark is not going to be supporting it. So if you have an issue that creeps up, an OS update that effects it, oh well. That is the risk you take with EOL equipment. The One has had VDJ support for months now (www.rane.com/the-rane-one-now-supports-djay-pro-ai-and-virtual-dj/) (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdOogZaQqdC1pIE.html) 4-channel controllers IMO are pretty worthless. There are few DJs that can actually mix 4-channels, and as I. mentioned there are essentially 4 channels on the One with the mic control and aux control, which most DJs use channels 3 and 4 for. Even if the Rane comes out with a 4-channel I doubt I would switch to that unless there were other compelling features. Frankly I wish the OG NS7 2-channel would have kept that pedigree with the NS7ii and NS7iii. Hey you do you. If you think you need 4-channels to mix then the One is simply not the one for you and there are plenty of other controllers out there to fit the bill.

There is absolutely no reason why inMusic would allow an in-house brand to deliberately pilfer sales from another. That makes zero business sense at all. "Future chipset". I think you need to spill a little more detail. If you are talking Core Audio virtually all controllers now are Core Audio compliant. The features in the NS73 were fine for their time, however some were a gimmick. For instance the radiostatic knobs were troublesome and a useless feature. I never used 4 channels so 2 were a waste to me. The mic inputs (while I never used them) were a joke. And the soundcard kinda blew. But it was the best option at the time. In this case the Daddy is dead. It's past its end of life and parts are going to be more rare as time goes on.

By all the means if you don't like it, that is fine. But it sounds like you haven't either installed the Rane control panel or you have a lower spec laptop. There is nothing specific about a controller's hardware that would make it sound digital and the soundcard is lifted from the Rane parts bin. I compared this to my 62 and my Elite and I detected no artifacting of the sound. The fader is literally their Magfaders, but again if you don't like then you would dislike the Magfaders on the 72 and the 70. I do wish they had Magfaders on their channel faders, but that is a minor nitpick.

@@indamixx216 you are describing what would happen with any potential digital playback device vs. vinyl. Go over to any extremely slow playback in digital then that artifacting can be present. This also builds the case to make sure you have the highest quality audio files to work with if you go into these extremes. A significant part of my library is FLAC flies to help preserve the original sound in the more extreme conditions. The NS7ii and iii, as much as I loved them, have a really shitty noisy card. Sure you need less gain on it's output but at the expense at of noise and some distortion, even some compression. Again I loved the NS7-series controllers but they are a product of what Numark had and they were undercutting on the soundcard. Again, if you don't like the One that is totally fine. But I am just saying this "digital" complaint is not specific to the One, and if you are complaining about a digital sound but not a noisy soundcard that the NS7-series has then you see where the conflict is here.

Let's hear what Rane One did better that justifies a 2 channel dj controller to be the same debut price as an almost 10 year old controller." 1) There are literally two videos on this very subject. 2) The NS7ii and iii are nearly identical. The iii shed some weight, had CoreAudio compliance, and the gimmick screen. 3) There are literally two videos on this very subject. 4) Most of the controllers out there now in the $600-1200 are really not all that. $1500 is not a big ask for what it offers.

@@djlouparis Yeah I deleted it because I wasn't able to finish the review yet. Most people cover the same things but it seems you had more detail which I wanted to watch first. The Numark did come out at that price but it is also nearly 10 years old. Least my NS7ii is. I need to get a channel fader fixed and already paid to do this in the past which I feel they just cleaned it because 3 months later it started to cut out again. The internals on thr numark suck and someone from Rane assured this was easier to replace. So I bought a DDJ 1000srt and think in terms of display, this Rane is similar in ways to that. I think thr Numark loop feature is still better than Rane One or DDJ 1000srt and decided to keep my NS7ii because it serves my style of mixing better. Plus trying to learn how to scratch on static jog wheels just doesn't feel right to me or haven't adjusted yet. I suppose 2 sound cards is better than the Numark, as it lacks that despite having 4 channels which is odd to me. That's really the only big seller I see so far. I need to finish your review, but seeing something that was for thr most part good, offering a little more IMO, nearly 10 years old, doesn't justify Rame's price. Lack if 4 channels and the loop is what aggrevates me, because I wasn't looking to hold onto 2 dj controllers. The only good I like with the ddj 1000srt (and if Rane One has this) is the key sync, and possibly the ease of effects in a central location.

@@iAmFAUST the 2-channel design makes sense in the Rane lineup since the only >2 channel mixer they have is the aged MP2015. Rane is about no-nonsense two-channel battle scratching styles. 4 channels is mostly not needed. It already has two mics plus on that second mic is an RCA aux-switchable input. In many cases people that rock 4-channel mixers are using channels 3 and 4 for discrete mic routing and a secondary emergency source. There are probably not even a handful of scratch DJs out there mixing on 4 channels simultaneously. For me the biggest selling points are 1) 10 lbs lighter than my NS7iii 2) A far cleaner sounding soundcard (x2) 3) no nonsense design (I don't care for the all red/white Numark design, the capacitive knobs, or the screens) 4) a smaller footprint 5) rane design quality The only real negative as I see is the stiff non-changable channel faders. That Rane seems like it had the same issue that my Pioneer DDJ 1000srt had with using the loop feature. I guess they feel like they can sell it because they make good mixers and Numark doesn't have anything out right now to compete as all moving platter platforms are discontinued... still though... this thing is under the NS7ii IMO, but above the NS7 (debut platform). .
