We’ve all heard the horror stories. What started out as a simple oil and filter change tuned into a nightmare. Starting an engine & revving it without oil pressure. What???
That’s right, due to a variable displacement vane oil pump, oil can drain out during the change process and the pump will not re-prime itself after oil is added.
Why is a variable displacement pump used?
The variable displacement oil pump has been added to these engines to help improve engine efficiency by cutting down on engine parasitic loads.
Some have replaced the OEM pump with a gear type pump to help eliminate the wear associated with the vane pump as well as pressure loss during oil changing.
So, what can you do if you are changing your oil without a lengthy prime process to get your Ranger up and running again & not pull the hair out of your head?

Thanks for the video mate, i service my 2016 Px2 every 10k with the ryco "major" service kit - RSK25C, and have just ordered from amazon, an EZ-Oil drain tap to replace the sump plug so when the next service comes up its just a matter of sticking a clear hose on the fitting and flicking the tap unlocked to drain the 10L into an old container and minimise clean up highly recommend anyone doin their own oil changes look into the EZ drain plugs. Also its great advice to have your funnel in and oil ready to go, the 6 P's and all. A habit i got into was to change filters in order of difficulty so you dont get too far ahead of yourself and panic. Cabin - Air - Fuel - Oil

Great video Max and thanks for your insights. I did mine within 10 minutes and no problems. I did it as an interim service on the belief that 15,000kms is too long for a change, so I did it midway between 90,000kms and 105,000kms scheduled services. Then I read that I shouldn't have done it myself whilst under new car warranty. I put the vehicle in for its next scheduled service and nothing was mentioned by the dealer.
@MiracleMAX
@MiracleMAX 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I believe that 15,000 km is far too long between services & an interim service at 7,500 km is good practice, but yes, the manufacturers do get a bit jittery if the service isn't carried out by a licensed technician. Credit for your common sense thinking! 😉

Hi MM, good video those plastic thingys are scrivets, I called them that for years until I bought myself an assortment pack and realised they had a name. I have heard that if you happen to lose oil pressure after a service that you can overfill the sump slightly and get the pump to prime.
@MiracleMAX
@MiracleMAX 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Itkaffey, Scrivets, you say? Interesting. Good to know! I'm afraid they will always be 'clippy things' to me.😁 You are absolutely correct. The method to 'solve' the loss of oil pressure is to overfill by a reasonable amount, let it sit for a length of time (perhaps overnight) quickly start it & then if it picks up oil pressure, drain off to the correct amount. Ford..........😢 Thanks for your comment MiracleMAX

Hey Kevan, I guess you are talking about interchanging the wheels? Everyone has their own opinion on the subject. Of course there is only one condition when you have to go front to rear on the same side - that's with rotational tyres (unless you change them on the rims) Thanks for your comment 😉

Pack alot of rags under the filter, making sure to well cover the holes in the sub frame because it is a pita to clean. I heard something about having to way overfill the engine and leave the filter cap off and let it sit for like a day to prime the pump if you dont refill in time. For that reason buy a bt50, same engine different pump
@MiracleMAX
@MiracleMAX 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tony KB, Great idea on using rags - I used some cardboard in the video to redirect the oil. I have left some comments in the reply to ltkaffey about the method to get the oil pressure back up again. I believe that the 3.2 Lt engine is identical in both the Ranger & BT50, including the pump. As mentioned in the description, some replace the vane type pump with a gear pump to stop this issue.

Hi MM. Another good video. Thankyou. Off topic, I wanted to ask, in a diesel, does the fuel primer on top of fuel filter have to become firm when pumped? My cars fuel primer doesn’t go hard. I’ve been told it’s normal , others have said it’s not 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
@MiracleMAX
@MiracleMAX 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ken Ezos, What vehicle/engine do you have? Is this after you have changed the fuel filter? If you prime it long enough, it should go hardish. If you start a CRD engine with little bit of air in the low side of the pump, it generally will start & pull the air through - generally. Air is compressible, whereas fluid (in this case, fuel) is non-compressible.
@kenezos
@kenezos 3 жыл бұрын
@@MiracleMAX it’s a pc challenger. 2.5 ltr 4D56. Even after filter has been changed it won’t go hard. Reason I ask is because the car runs rough at idle. Possibly air still in fuel lines?
@MiracleMAX
@MiracleMAX 3 жыл бұрын
@@kenezos Has it only played up since the filter replacement? What you can do is put clear hose from the filter to the high pressure pump. That will show you if there is any air in the line. The primers are just a rubber diaphragm & do wear out. Or add a separate fuel supply temporarily. Here's an example of what I mean: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKqSYMyUtcy8n6c.html Or it could be something totally unrelated, like a vacuum leak. Do you have a smoke machine or something similar? Have the valve clearances been done on a regular basis? Does it only run rough at idle when cold? Have you considered glow plugs?
@kenezos
@kenezos 3 жыл бұрын
@@MiracleMAX it runs rough most times whether it’s hot or cold. It’s only got 75000kms on it. Whilst it was under warranty the stealership changed injectors thinking it was that. I told them to check SCV, EGR valve, engine mounts, etc.. whether they did I don’t know. They did valves at its last service about 2000kms ago. Don’t know how well they did it. Glow plugs was never spoken of. Could be something to look at. I’ll watch your video and check out for air. I don’t have a smoke machine unfortunately. Thanks again 😊
@MiracleMAX
@MiracleMAX 3 жыл бұрын
@@kenezos Can an injector cut be done in the actuation section of the scan tool? If only one cylinder is effected, this could help isolate which one is playing up. Another method to look for vacuum leaks without a smoke tester is to use a spray bottle of water or a can of engine start. Just by spraying it around various spots while the engine is running, if the RPM changes, it might indicate a vacuum leak. The EGR valves can suck air in through a faulty gasket or the diaphragm between the intake/exhaust sections.

I want to do oil change for my ranger.Must I drain the engine oil then remove the oil filter or fill in the new oil then change the oil filter.
@MiracleMAX
@MiracleMAX 2 күн бұрын
Either way is fine. Whatever takes the shortest time. I usually drain the oil & while it is draining, I replace the filter. The main preparation is to have your filter, oil, new drain plug washer & funnel ready.

Is it the same engine? Do you mean the drive belt? If it has been run out of oil, there is a real risk of engine damage.

I guess I didn't. I did reply to a similar question by @NoName-mb7iw. I usually drain the oil and while waiting for it to drain, I change the filter. By that time the oil has drained. Refit the sump plug and is ready to be topped up with oil.

Can you change the filter first and then drop the oil out?
@MiracleMAX
@MiracleMAX Жыл бұрын
I personally like to drain the oil and while it is draining use that time to replace the filter, then refit the sump plug and you are ready to top up with oil. I did yet another one the other day without any issues. The key is to be prepared with all that you need to do the change - the correct amount of oil with any seals in the lids of the container removed, filter, sump plug washer, funnel, drain tin, rags, correct tools, step to stand on etc. That way you are not wasting time looking for items you need to complete the task. It is really not that hard to do it within the 10 minute suggested time.

@MiracleMAX

Although these don't have an oil light, if it lacks oil pressure there will be a warning come up on the dash and you will hear the low oil pressure rattling. I find the best method is to not drain the oil when it is hot. The viscosity of the oil is greater when it is not hot. I hope that this gives more of a chance for the oil to be retained within the pump. That being said, I always do the oil change in the 10 minutes suggested. This video is on the 3.2Lt diesel, like yours.

@@MiracleMAX thanks so much for the reply. I did change it cold.. I didn’t know about the 10 minute rule until I was in the middle of the oil change and didn’t have the right size socket to change the filter… so I had to go get one which made me exceed 10 minutes.. i crunk it up and let it sit there and run for 10 minutes to see if a light would come on or anything and nothing so far. Hope it’s ok and NOW I know to do it under 10 minutes… thanks again!

Hi mate, what happens if I need to change the oil sump gasket. Do I need to drain the oil and remove the oil sump, fit the new gasket screw the sump back on refill the oil, all under 10min and if so how is that possible
@MiracleMAX

In that case, you may have to overfill the sump with oil, get it started and then drain the excess to the correct level.

@@rlgstudios3263 I can't comment on the filling with oil trick. I assume you are talking about when the sump is removed. I gather that priming the pump may help. I suppose that those rebuilding these engines have their own tricks to avoid the dreaded oil draining issue. We used to prime the pumps with grease to help prime it, but that was way, way back in the day. 😉😉 Which is more durable the Triton or the Ranger? The Triton has suffered greatly with overheating issues, but that is only later 2.5 engines. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qsmkidWbmciqYp8.html As for the Ranger, I don't know of too many issues apart from what is listed here. magazine.unsealed4x4.com.au/unsealed-4x4-issue-067/ford-ranger-3-2l-common-problems-and-solutions 4wheeldriveguide.com/ford-ranger-3-2-diesel-engine-problems-solutions/ I hope that helps

Apparently you should change the filter first before dropping the oil, and that changing the filter first DOES NOT count towards the 10 minute time limit. It's as soon as the sump plug comes out is when you should time 10 minutes.
@MiracleMAX
@MiracleMAX 11 ай бұрын
Good advice. That's what I do. That being said, the '10 minutes' is a guide and many different factors would come into play, such as viscosity of oil, engine temperature, service interval (the viscosity may be thicker when older), amongst others. But sticking to the 10 minutes is a great practice to avoid any possible mishaps. Thanks for your comment.
